Andrew Shirley, Head of Luxury Research at Knight Frank, examines the market for luxury investments
his time last year classic cars
still had a firm grip at the top
of the Knight Frank Luxury
Investment Index (KFLII), but that all
changed with the introduction of rare
Scotch whisky into the mix.
With 10-year growth of 540%, according
to the Knight Frank Rare Whisky 100
Index – created for us by the experts at
Rare Whisky 101, even classic cars couldn’t
compete, especially as the market has
started to lose momentum.
Although the HAGI “Top” Index, which
we use to track the performance of classic
cars has grown by a highly respectable
190% over the past 10 years, annual growth
to June 2019 slipped into negative territory
with prices sliding 5%.
Art, meanwhile, rose 10% over the same
period – Rabbit, a work by the pop artist
Jeff Koons, set a record for a living artist
when it went under the hammer for just
over $91m in May – while investment-grade
fine wine was up 9%.
Gear change
“The money guys have gone elsewhere,”
says HAGI’s Dietrich Hatlapa when I ask
him why classic car prices have come back.
Donald Trump’s clarification of Section
1031 of the Internal Revenue code regarding
classic cars, has also dampened the market
somewhat, he adds. “What we’re seeing
now is the return of the collector.”
“In terms of traded values, the expected
differentiation and outperformance
between automobiles with notable history
or sought after rarity, including brand new
supercars, is continuing,” confirms Peter
Neumann from Connecticut-based classic
& collectible car advisory firm Chrome
Strategies Management.
“From a more positive perspective the
‘lifestyle’ element of the hobby continues
to expand rapidly, and awareness outside
T

the bounds of traditional participants
is widespread. We see more planning
around best-practice buying, holding,
and planning for the future. The hobby is
‘growing up’,” adds Mr Neumann.
“The direction of the collector car
market in the U.S. continues to be set by
younger enthusiasts – primarily Gen-X
(1965-1981),” points out John Wiley Senior
Data Analyst at specialist insurer Hagerty.
“Their interests in vehicles such as
vintage trucks and SUVs, along with
useable cars and bikes in the traditional
segments, will shape what’s in demand.
As the more numerous Millennials (1982-
2000) grow-up and become wealthier,
expect further shifts along these lines.”
Big money
Despite the slowdown, the best cars are
still making serious money, albeit off the
back of lower sell-through rates at auction
where fewer cars are hitting their top or
even low estimates.
The benchmark Monterey sales this fall
were a good example of the current market.
Overall, just over $245m worth of cars were
hammered down, still a lot of metal, but
well short of the $371m achieved last year.
However, nine cars managed to break
the $5m barrier. The top seller was a
McLaren F1 which RM Sotheby’s got away
for $19.8m – a world record for the model.
Other notable successes included $6.4m for
a James Bond Aston Martin DB5 – replete
with all the gadgets from 007’s Goldfinger
outing – and $7.7m for our cover star, a
1965 Ford GT40 Roadster Prototype.
The $6m paid for Nicki Lauder’s 312T F1
car also highlighted the ongoing demand
for historic grand prix cars, notes Mr
Hatlapa. “F1 is a hot market right now.”
Milestones
This year also marks a number of historic
classic car milestones, with Bentley and
Zagato both celebrating their centenaries.
Fittingly best in show at Pebble Beach
this year was a 1931 Bentley 8-litre Gurney
Nutting Sports Tourer (pictured below left),
owned by Sir Michael Kadoorie.
Meanwhile at the other end of the
collector market, the last ever VW Beetle
rolled off the production line earlier this
year – truly the end of an era. A 1977 “bug”
with just 128 miles on the clock made
$61,000 at the Monterey sales. Rare special
editions can make much more.

100 years of BentleyTop 10 most collected Bentleys in US UHNW collections*
How did you get into classic cars and what was the first vehicle that you bought?
Like many people who are interested in
classic cars, I was born into it. I grew up
racing, restoring, buying and selling cars
because that’s what my father did in his
spare time. When I was 16, I was gifted
a 1967 Volvo 122s station wagon with a
wooden roof rack by my dad – it was navy
blue with a maroon interior and probably
the slowest machine on the road. I was
desperate to get into something faster. As
soon as I had the money, I bought a 1969
Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV, which was by far the
coolest car in the parking lot at my high
school. Mission accomplished.
How did your collection grow and what’s in your garage now?
My dad raced and restored Austin Healeys
and so I’ve always been into European
cars. Over the years I’ve had many more
Alfa Romeos, including a 1986 GTV6 when
I was at college in upstate New York. The
passenger door wouldn’t close properly
when it was cold out – basically the entire
school year – and it would swing open
whenever I took a left-hand turn. It made
for fun dates. Like other people my tastes
have gone in phases and my collection has
grown and shrunk with life events. At one
point I was really interested in cars from
the 1980s and 1990s, and went through
three E34 BMW M5s and two Cosworth
Mercedes 190E 2.3-16s – the car that made
Ayrton Senna famous.
The most cars I’ve owned at one time
was nine – three of them were BMW M5s –
and with living in NYC it was pretty
tricky to find garages for all of them. Now
I’m down to a reasonable four, which I
think is a good number. One of them is a
McLaren MP4-12C, which I bought from
the dealer in Chicago and drove 1,000
miles back to New York. I also have a 2014
Porsche 911 50th anniversary edition,
which is a very special car, a rare Mercedes
station wagon from Sweden, and a 1965
Austin Healey 3000.
What has been your favourite car and why?
My Austin Healey. My father purchased
it in 1983 and we restored it together with
my brother. It was the car that I learned to
drive stick on and I drove it to my school
prom as well as many high school dates
on warm nights. In 2014 my dad sold it to
a surgeon when his wife said he had too
many cars. I found out days later and was
crushed. Miraculously, earlier this year I
was looking though Hemmings late one
night and saw it for sale. Straight away
I left a message for the seller – he didn’t
return my call immediately and made me
sweat it out for 36 hours – but I got it back
and now it will never be sold.
What is your best driving memory?
One of my most recent fun memories
was when I drove the McLaren back from
Chicago with a friend. We went through the
Aleghenny mountain range, across lots of
farmland and down the occasional dirt road.
People would crowd round us like it was a
spaceship. I convinced this same friend to
drive my 50th Anniversary Porsche 911 back
from Ohio as well. These adventures are my
favorite part of the hobby.
Is there a dream car you’d like to add to your collection?
If money was no object, it would have to
be a McLaren F1. On a more practical level
I’m looking for a Porsche 911 S 1965 to 1967
in Irish green – I just love that color. Early
911s are such wonderful cars to drive and
live with.
What do you enjoy most about being the head judge at the Americana Manhasset Concours?
There are two elements that keep me
coming back. What I really love is to walk
from car to car and speak to the owners
and get the stories behind their vehicles.
Classic car owners are some of the nicest
people you can meet, and they love sharing
intimate details about the history of their
cars, even with people they’ve only just
met. I also just love being in the judging
room at the start of the day and getting
to set the tone and conversation with
my judges for each of the classes. And of
course the concours is a great event,
there’s something for everybody.
Which of the cars that you’ve judged really stand out?
I would say it’s some of the owners rather
than specific cars that have stood out to me.
Two of them in particular: Glenn Simon
and his Ferraris and Phil Schwartz and
his Corvettes. Glenn is somebody who is
dedicated to doing things perfectly, but
simultaneously seems to be able to stay
so laid back. Phil has a great attitude and
his cars are some of the very rarest and
best examples.
Apart from Americana Manhasset are you involved with any other classic car events?
Yes, I run two events which are very different.
The Bridge is an invitation-only, non-judged
show held at the former Bridgehampton
Race Circuit. I started it four years ago with
two partners and it’s absolutely blown up.
To begin with we had 60 cars, but this
year there were over 260. Owners fly them
in from all over the world and I have
thousands of people phoning up asking if
they can take part. I’d say it’s now one of
the premier automotive events in the US.
I also co-founded CarPark, which is NYC’s
curated cars & coffee. It happens three to
four times a year and is very laid back,
there could be 1,000 people and 200 cars of
all shapes and sizes.
By profession you’re a lawyer who’s worked on some pretty high profile cases; which is more stressful, standing up in court or choosing a concours winner?
[Laughs] Well, actually, I don’t find either
of them particularly stressful. Both are
labors of love. When you’re judging cars it
can be a bit political, but you just have to
put that to one side.

Featured in the May 2000, issue of “Architectural Digest”, one of
its creators described it as a marriage of American Shingle style and
English Arts and Crafts.
Its floor plan encompasses a unique and open feeling with
public rooms in the west wing and service and leisure rooms in
the east wing. Each wing has its own spectacular staircase; the
east accesses all three floors; the west accesses only the second
floor that houses five generous bedroom-bath suites. The ultimate
retreat and entertainer’s delight, the property includes ample
parking, an attached four-car garage, and an oversized pool with
expansive brick patios and a delightful pool house.
Upper Brookville has long been a popular location for leaders of
industry and finance to build their grand estates.
Its beautiful, wooded countryside is dotted with gorgeous
properties and residents enjoy an ideal location convenient
for boating, golf, equestrian facilities, quaint village shopping
and museums.
And when work sadly beckons, close proximity to the
Long Island Railroad means Manhattan is just around
40 minutes away.
ucked away on five magnificent acres in the North Shore
village of Upper Brookville, a mystical and, perhaps,
even magical estate welcomes all with a warm and
charming presence.
Built at the end of the twentieth century, but looking like it was
built at the beginning of that century, it presents a conundrum.
What is its architectural style?
Its rustic character evokes a love of nature. Is it patterned after
an Adirondack “grand camp”? How about a Handsel and Gretel
house in the middle of its own enchanted wooded playground? Was
it found in the pages of J.R.R. Tolkein book?
No. The answer is in the name of the architectural firm that
designed and custom built it. Ike Kligerman Barkley are well known
for their amazing ability to combine pieces of varying architectural
styles into stunning eclectic masterpieces.
Such is this amazing home. It is exquisitely crafted and designed
with the finest of materials and craftsmanship to provide luxury
and a casual elegance ideal for “Gold Coast” living.
It is very comfortable for family living as well
as entertaining on a grand scale and could appeal to
the most discerning of buyers.
