St. Peter's Good News Lutheran Church Newsletter

“Your hands have made and fashioned me; give me understanding that I

may learn your commandments.” (Psalm 119:73 NRSV)

It’s back to school time, a time to come back from the summer break and begin the

diligent work of learning again. When I was a kid, there was always a certain excitement

about back to school time: what teachers would I have? Would I be in the same class with

any of my friends from previous years or would I have a whole new group of kids to get to

know? And then, of course, there was the academic side of things: what classes would I

have and would I like them? Would I get tons of homework or would I have a “nice” teacher

who didn’t assign much work outside of class or who, at least, gave you time to work on

homework within class? We’re gearing up for a return to Sunday School, as well, with

classes beginning with our Rally Day on September 8th.

For some folks, once the days of elementary education and, possibly, college are

behind them, there seems to be an attitude that learning has come to an end. The same is

true for those who have been confirmed and believe that their Christian education has

reached an end. But in life and in our Christian lives, learning continues as long as we are

alive. There are always new things to learn in life: in our jobs, as we meet new people, as

we become parents or move from one place to another. And, for Christians, our learning

continues as well: each week in church, through attending Bible studies and other

educational opportunities, in talking to other Christians and, of course, in continuing to

read the Holy Scriptures. No matter how many times I read a piece of scripture, I

almost always find something new, because I am not the same person I was the last time

I read it and the world is not the same place. It’s not that the words of scripture change, but

our understanding of them and their applicability to our lives changes as we continue to

seek their wisdom and guidance. So, if you think you’ve learned all you can or all you need

to know, think again. There is always more to learn and it is good for the mind and for our

spirits.

Dear St. Peter’s Church: Thank you so much for allowing me to participate in Session 1 at Bear Creek Camp. I had a won-derful time and learned a lot of things about God. I had a great time at the dance, playing in the rain with kids in my group and making the friends. Something I learned was that God knows you more than you think. He knows things about you that you may not know about yourself. He knows every thought you have before you even think it. Again, thank you so much for letting me go to Bear Creek.

Abby Faulkner

Dear St. Peter’s Church: Thank you St. Peter’s Church for allowing me to participate in Session 1 of Bear Creek Camp. I had fun doing zip lining, spending time with other campers/counselors , and eating. I learned that God has made us for a reason, and made us for who we are for a reason too.

Amelia Faulkner

Dear St. Peter’s One Stitch at a Time: Thank you for the donation of crochet octopuses to our NICU at St. Luke’s Hospital/University Health Network. As you know the little critters that you donate are a vital part to keeping our NICU families felling connected to their little one during their stay with us. It is a tangible way that they can feel as they are contributing to their well-being. The NICU Family Support Program would not be what it is, without people like you to help us along. From the bottom of my heart, thank you!

Barbara Raab, RNC-NIC

MOD Family Support Coordinator St. Luke’s Hospital and Health Network

During the month of September the Social Ministries committee will be collecting non-perishable food items for donation to our local

food pantries.

Your donations are always appreciated. There are bags in the narthex if you’d like to take one to help remind you of the need of donations.
