Uganda Project

A group of secondary school students from St Joseph’s in Rush have an exciting venture ahead as they are planning a Uganda Immersion trip for February of next year. The group consists of 35 students from St Joseph’s and also some past pupils from Lusk N.S. As part of their fundraising campaign, a talk will be held in Lusk N.S and the students will also take part in a non-uniform day to contribute towards funds. This trip is also in association with Aidlink which is an Irish Non-Government Organisation that provides direct support to local NGO’S in Kenya, Uganda and Ghana, delivering sustainable improvements to water and sanitation, educational environments, food security and health.

There are many other fundraising events happening throughout the year, such as a Race Night in October, a Quiz Night in Lusk GAA in September, a Christmas Craft and Produce Fair in November and a Back to School Disco for first and second years in Lusk GAA at the end of August.

Many successful fundraisers have already taken place, such as a

charity ball in aid of the project, which saw a great turn out of 3rd, 4th and 5th years of St Joseph’s and was a very enjoyable night. As well as that, a fun run on the beach was organised and the students were sponsored to take part and help raise money for the trip! For the students who will be taking part in this immersion project, this will truly be a memorable experience. The Aidlink Immersion Programme generally involves the students participating in classes in a classroom of up to 50 students and attending regular classes, to fully experience a different culture in a familiar setting. They will also experience community life in the local village and will hopefully gain an insight into the difference in lifestyle over in Uganda.

We hope all those involved in this project enjoy this experience immensely and wish them the best of luck in their fundraising endeavours! By, Rebecca Rowan

Lusk Heritage GroupFormed in 1989, Lusk Heritage Group has had great fun over the

years recording the voice of our towns-people and listening to what they had to say. We have produced almost 40 videos/DVDs and held many exhibitions. We’ve marked many occasions and anniversaries, most notably the 800th anniversary of Grace Dieu.

We have erected many plaques around the village of Lusk, planted a commemorative tree in memory of the great Thomas Ashe in the grounds of the GAA. Lusk Heritage Group have produced many books, brochures and photographic records and are now happy to see the launch of their website as of the 30th July, 2015 by Mayor of Fingal, Councillor David O’Connor.

Lusk Tidy Towns are working hard this summer to ensure our picturesque village is in great shape for this year’s competition. A very dedicated group of volunteers work to keep the area clean throughout the year.Group spokesperson Pat Kelly said “We would like to welcome our newest recruits Doris and David to join a great team, full of community spirit. Each one of us takes great pride in the area. We pick up litter on a daily basis; we weed, plant, spray, water, sweep and paint while minding the beautiful Joe’s Bridge’. The many tubs dotted around highlight the area, as do the wildflowers on the Rathmore

Road and the Roses galore. Pat recommends a viewing of the grounds around St. McCullins Church, where you can find lots of delightful gardens and flowers - true markers of the beauty of Lusk. The ‘Clay Cottage’ on the Dublin Road with is beautiful thatched roof and bright flowers is a prize-winning cottage and a delight for tourists who come to visit Lusk for the heritage centre and the fine towers of the 15th

century. Pat thanks all the community organisations, clubs, Lusk Community College, and all the schools that helped maintain the area. She also thanked the supporters and Fingal County Council for all the bags of rubbish that were collected and the operations department for all their ongoing support.

Local NewsLusk Tidy Towns are Hard at Work

Parents throughout the Lusk area are collectively breathing a sigh of relief as the summer holidays come to a close and the schools prepare to open their doors for the new school term.

Lusk N.S, Corduff N.S, Hedgestown N.S, and Rush and Lusk Educate Together, all reopen as well as Lusk Community College, who welcome back their students in the coming weeks. Each of the schools had very productive and exciting years last year, from participating in National Spring Clean Month by picking up litter around the Lusk area, and competing and winning a chess competition in Rush and Lusk Educate Together. They also learned about biodiversity by transferring plants to a vegetable garden and hosted a Zumbathon fundraiser to raise funds for the school at Corduff N.S.

Hedgestown N.S also had many successful fundraising events throughout their school year, including a delicious cake sale, which provided funds for sports equipment and other items for the school

and an entertaining table quiz that contributed towards to school funds. Lusk N.S engaged in many exciting ventures also last year – including a multicultural day where the students got to showcase different aspects of their culture to the whole school through traditional dances, songs and poems. They were also the winners of the Intel eSchools 2014 competition and received an amazing technology package of 30 laptop devices along with a teacher laptop, a Smart interactive screen unit and a portable charging unit.

All the primary schools are reopening their gates, with Lusk N.S and Rush and Lusk Educate Together both welcoming back pupils on Tuesday the 1st of September. Corduff N.S reopens on Monday the 31st of August and Hedgestown N.S embraces a new school year on Friday the 28th of August. Lusk Community College is also resuming classes and has an exciting and challenging year ahead as they begin to prepare their new third years for the school’s first Junior Certificate Examinations. Best of luck to all students heading back to school and especially those starting new schools for the first time this September!

Local NewsUnder pressure from your creditors?

A percentage of the Irish population, including the people in Lusk, are experiencing financial pressure. If you are experiencing financial pressure because of debts there are several ways to lessen the burden. The old adage is true; the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Creditors know that they cannot get what you do not have thus each creditor will try to be squeakiest wheel. There are two types of creditors.

(1) secured creditors e.g. your mortgage with the bank.And(2) unsecured creditors e.g. your credit card.

Creditors should not be feared. While creditors may threaten impending armageddon should their debts remain unpaid, it is important to remember that all they are trying to do is recover their money. You should talk to your creditors and try to deal with the problem rather than ignore it. If your creditor will not talk to you or if they are being unreasonable, you can force the issue by seeking to avail of the options open to you. Those options could be a “debt relief note”, a “debt settlement arrangement”, a “personal insolvency arrangement” or “bankruptcy”. There may be other options also, depending on your circumstances. Keep in mind that ignoring the problem will not fix it or make it go away. There are solutions out there to help you. Taking the first step towards helping yourself and availing of these services should give you immediate peace of mind.

Animal Matters

Welcome to “Animal Matters”.In this column we will try to cover some typical and topical issues

that crop up from time to time in relation to the family pet. The animals and pets in the Lusk area come in all shapes and sizes! In this locality, we see dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea-pigs and gerbils, birds insects and reptiles. The list is long, but variation is the spice of life.

This month, we’ll focus on our canine friends and cover a common problem seen at this time of year in pet dogs. Fleas and mites are a

problem that becomes more prevalent as the summer months roll by. Any outdoor dog is liable to pick up fleas from their environment and transport them on their coat back into their bed indoors. The flea spends a lot of time on the animal itself but it spends equal amounts in the bedding and on the carpets of the house as it passes through its life cycle. In fact, by the time we notice our dog scratching and itching, we find that quite a number of fleas have built up in the areas the dog spends most time in.

That is to say, if fleas are found amongst the hairs of the dog’s coat, you can rest assured that their blanket, their basket, the mat and unfortunately even the sofa have many little critters hopping about.

Don’t panic! In times gone by, our flea treatments were only effective on the day we applied them. They killed the flea on the day of the application, but the next morning a new flea would jump in and re-infect again. With the advancement of the modern medicines, we can apply one treatment today that continues to kill for quite a few weeks afterwards. The new fleas keep hopping on but the medicine continues to work and eventually, the last little insect is killed and gone. Though this is a simplified description, in severe cases it may be necessary to give repeat application until the entire infestation is cleared. The thing to bare in mind is the time of year – watch out for pesky pet-pests especially during the months of July, August and September. Seek advice from your vet if you are unsure what to do. Take comfort in the thought that modern medicines are quite a deal more effective than they used to be – a topic I’ll touch on again in following issues.

Club is more than a club; it is a community that encourages involvement from all family members regardless of age or gender. The club currently fields a number of teams ranging from under 9’s to under 16’s both boys and girls and also a minor team. At adult level, they have 2 teams competing in AFL5 and AFL10 North County and the Dublin Junior Football Championship and one ladies football team. They also run a kid’s academy every Saturday morning from 10.45 to 12pm for children aged between 4 and 7 years old, with a small fee of €2. New members are welcome at every session.

The club organises many events for their young players throughout the year such as the Street Leagues friendly competition in June for boys and girls aged between 5 and 12 years old. Numerous summer camps also take place during the summer months. The Kelloggs Cul Camp took place during July for 4 to 13 year olds which gave the players a great chance to enhance their skills, improve their physical well-being and form new friendships. Club Camp will also be taking place in August for 4 to 13 year olds who are interested in both Gaelic football and hurling.

Round Towers GFC also run different workshops for anyone interested in coaching or working alongside the coaching staff and interacting with the young players

on the football and hurling teams. Some past workshops include the Foundation Workshop for beginners, which is aimed at beginner coaches, granting them the skills to assist coaches in the organisation of activities for hurling & Gaelic football; and the Award 1 Child Workshop, which helped coaches take into account the different playing capabilities between children, young adult, and adult players, and being able to competently work with the different skill levels this presents. Round Towers Lusk is a club that’s based on community, friendship, teamwork and - most importantly - fun! New members are always welcome to join, just download a membership form from www.roundtowerslusk.ie.

SportsLusk AFC

Lusk United AFC is a local club that has grown extensively over the last few years. Founded in 1969, it now boasts 320 players spanning across 19 teams, from a kid’s academy for 4 - 7 year olds to 3 senior teams including an over 35’s. The kid’s academy takes place every Saturday morning from 9.15 to 10.30 in Lusk National School and new members are welcome every week. The club also organises events throughout the year for the players, aside from matches, such as the very successful Street Leagues that recently took place in Orlynn Park in July. An FAI soccer summer camp was also held for young players towards the end of July as a chance for them to learn new skills and make new friends.

Lusk AFC have also been working towards highlighting the lack of investment. It has been developed through a working committee, consisting of representatives from the sporting

clubs in Lusk/Fingal and the Lusk Community Council along with the support of local schools and other sporting/community groups from the wider Lusk area. The aim of this Sports Plan is to create a development guide towards implementing ongoing investment in sporting facilities in Lusk over the coming years.

Lusk AFC also took part in and organised a number of events and fundraisers such as the “Club Kiosk” initiative that was aimed at raising funds for amateur soccer and rugby clubs across Ireland. This involved the club taking over and managing a food kiosk at Aviva Stadium for a day with 10% of the takings going to the club. They are also actively involved in coaching within the local primary schools and they also provide general community workshops for parents. Their goals as coaches are to develop the players into well-rounded young men and women so that they can look back on their time with Lusk United with fondness.
