FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK

The University League’s 2014-2015 year is coming to an end, but activities continue. Our circus themed Stay-at-Home Scholarship Benefit has been a great success. So far, 175 people have given $17,535. I want to thank all of the generous donors. We continue to welcome donations. On Tuesday, May 12, we will hold our Annual Meeting at Blackhawk Country Club. Chancellor Rebecca Blank will address What’s New and What’s Next at UW – Madison? This topic and this speaker cannot be more timely as our world-class University faces many challenges. After Chancellor Blank’s talk will be a short question and answer session. The University League Annual Meeting will follow. Please join us to support the League and the University.

Tuesday, May 19, we will offer again our successful Epic Tour with a salad buffet luncheon at Gray’s Tied House prior to the Epic Tour. In June 2014 a long-time member asked me, “What are your goals and directions for the coming year?” Thinking of the wonderful year that Mary Jo Willis had led, I replied simply, “To stay the course.” However, as it turned out there have been changes. A Madison College course by Boris Frank inspired me to invite him, a well-known non-profit professional in Madison, to speak about Strategic Planning at our August Board meeting. In response, Sally Lorenz and the Long-range Planning and Policy Committee organized a Strategic Planning Session in November for the Board. Sally led the session, collecting Board input. Subsequently, this Committee used the Board input from the planning session to develop a Five- Year Plan. This plan sets goals for membership, scholarship, service, technology, and leadership development. The Strategic Plan was approved by the Board at the April 2015 meeting. (See the article on the Strategic Plan on page 5).

Other accomplishments this year are: 1. Our membership is at 460: 405 household and 54

spousal. We successfully replaced, with 39 new members, our non-renewing members.

2. The Program Committee has produced a banner Badger year including UW President Ray Cross

and Chancellor Rebecca Blank, UW alum Michael Feldman and the ever-popular Kat Trio. These events attracted more couples. In addition, there were three new luncheon bus trips – two to Epic and one to the School of Nursing.

3. The Scholarship Benefit has raised $17,535 for student scholarships.

4. The new logo was rolled out. Our new banner led to color on the front and back pages of the League Letter. We made new nametags and head table place cards and ordered stationery.

5. Wisconsin Bookworms had a great year, with exceptional donations in memory of Robbie Preston.

6. The Publicity Committee has worked hard to extend the University League message to the greater community. We have featured free spots on Wisconsin Public Television, Channel 15 (with John Stoefflet’s feature on Mary Warfield’s Making a Difference with Wisconsin Bookworms March 31 6 pm news) and Michael Feldman’s promotions. Wisconsin Public Radio commercials promoted our fall and winter events this year.

7. The Endowed Scholarship Committee is pleased to report that $110,111 has been transferred to the designated UW-Madison Schools and Colleges for student

(continued from page 2) scholarships. This is about 10% more than last year’s distributions and still is the largest amount in the Big Ten.

I want to thank all of you. You have worked diligently with your talents, support and time to continue League’s work and mission. Thank you to the Board members, committee members, interest group chairs and assistants, volunteers, as well as all members. Your service is greatly appreciated. UNIVERSITY LEAGUE STRATEGIC PLAN FOR 2015-2020 The University League Board and Long Range Planning and Policy Committee have spent many hours this year developing a 5-year Strategic Plan for the League. It was approved by the board at its meeting on March 26, 2015. The overall purpose of the plan is to build on our past strengths, maintain our current activities, and chart a future for University League so that it is viable for many years to come. The Strategic Plan is divided into 5 sections. Each has goals, action items, responsible committees, and completion dates. Here is a brief summary of key points. Further details will be provided in League Letters in the coming year. 1.) Friendship/Membership Goals a. Maintain current level of membership (about 450). Attrition is about 40 members per year so we

all need to continue to introduce new friends to League and encourage new members to join interest groups and become involved.

b. Enhance our publicity and ongoing partnership with similar groups 2.) Scholarships a. Increase the number of endowed scholarships by 25% over 3 years. b. Increase the dollar amount given to general scholarships by 25% over 3 years. 3.) Technology a. Create an ad hoc Technology Committee to evaluate ways that University League can expand its

presence technologically. b. Determine readiness of membership to use various current and emerging technologies. c. Consider starting a Technology interest group that can make use of available technology training

in our area. 4.) Service a. Expand the participation in Bookworms by 20% over the next 5 years (both number of places to

read and children reached) and increase funds available for purchasing books. b. Regularly support Wisconsin Public Television fundraising volunteer opportunities to reciprocate

for their support of the Bookworms program. c. Continue to offer our other volunteer opportunities to members 5.) Building Leadership for University League a. Develop intentional ways to bring members into leadership positions. b. Review the organization of the board and explore other ways of setting up the board and

maintaining its functions. We encourage you to support this plan and help future boards carry it out. Long Range Planning and Policy Committee members: Caroline Liedtke, Brook Soltveldt, Lois Buelow, Kathy Knox, Judy Stang, Sally Lorenz (chair); ex officio: Kay Jarvis-Sladky, Linda Harvey, Mary Jo Willis

The University League Endowed Scholarships: GIFTS that keep on Giving and Growing Through the years, 22 University League named Endowed Scholarships have been established by generous donors. These University League Endowed Scholarships are held by the University of Wisconsin Foundation and that agency does all of the investing, financial work, and record keeping. All of the interest accrued to these accounts is given to the various specified schools and colleges annually (listed in the Yearbook). In March 2015, more than $110,000 in interest was distributed to the schools to be awarded as scholarships. A minimum of ten thousand dollars is required by the Foundation for a new named scholarship. However, this amount can be donated over a number of years in $1000 increments. The endowment may be in one's own name, in the name of a living relative, in the name of a couple, or as a memorial for a deceased relative or friend. In addition to the 22 named Endowed Funds, the University League has the University League Endowed Scholarship whose interest

income is divided equally each year among the following four professional schools: Medicine, Law, Pharmacy, and Veterinary Sciences. This holds the funds of donors who are building up to the $10,000 minimum required for a named Endowed Scholarship. When the amount donated reaches $10,000.00, a named Endowed Scholarship can be established. The donor’s Memorandum of Agreement with the Foundation specifies where the Endowed Scholarship’s future scholarships (the interest on the donated principle) will be awarded. If you are interested in establishing an Endowed Scholarship, contact the League President or the Endowed Scholarship Committee Chair. --Helen Lackore, Chair: Endowed Scholarship Committee

Bookworms Update They can make a book about worms exciting. They might cut out dozens of white paper circles for a snowman book project. They have sung songs about fish and friends. They are Wisconsin Bookworms volunteer readers. And I want to thank them for all their efforts and the enthusiasm for reading that they have shared with 378 preschoolers this year! On behalf of the children who benefit from the Wisconsin Bookworms program,

many thanks go to Bev Zarnstorff, Daphne Haacker, Julia McAndrews, Michael Diny, Sheila Endres, Linda Mayfield, Erica Servais, Helen Read, Kathy Knox, Diane Smidt, Sally Lorenz, Madonna Scullion, Anne Raffa, Laureen Yoshino, Barb Larsen, Nancy Gloe, Dory Christenson, Peggy LeMahieu, Nancy Baumgardner, Karen Hansen, Elinor Zach, Sally Schrag, Emlen O’Keeffe, Florence Schmitt, Karen Sallander, Susan Sprague and Sharon Vetter. If you would like more information about how you can help with Wisconsin Bookworms next year, please contact Mary Warfield at 273-9809 or [email protected].

HEATHER O’DONNELL

Heather O’Donnell, a 35-year-old single mother of a 7-year-old boy, is a recent University League scholarship recipient. Heather has had a rough start in life, but now with the support from others, some of whom she doesn’t even know, she is now doing well and is on her way to a successful career. Heather describes herself as being very dedicated, strong willed, and a determined person, especially when she puts her mind to something and if you get discouraged, never give up, keep on going. “Believe me, there have been several times throughout my journey that I have wanted to just give up and throw in the towel, but I haven’t. My son is my greatest motivator. He makes me want to be a better person, and to strive for a better life.” Heather feels that it is extremely important to be able to provide her son with opportunities that were not available to her. She also does not want him to feel that life is a constant struggle. What makes her journey to UW-Madison unique is the help that she has received from the professors and clinical instructors. She talked about their vast knowledge base and their experiences that they have passed on to her. She is really glad to be studying at UW-Madison. Her proposed major is science and nursing, and her dream job would be to work in a hospital operating room or with mentally ill patients. Heather looks to those who help others as her role model. She mentions that without the help from kind souls throughout her life, she doesn’t know where she would be. “Kindness and generosity in a world that all too often seems so harsh and selfish is a breath of fresh air. Once

kindness is experienced, it can be passed on and shared,” said Heather. When Heather is not working or going to school, she enjoys refinishing old furniture pieces that she finds at garage sales and thrift

stores. She also enjoys painting. This scholarship has meant a great deal to Heather. Heather said that it has helped to relieve the financial burden for her as she pursues her education. She said that is has helped to ease her current and future stresses. As University League, we are proud to be supporting Heather in her quest to further her education and provide for her son. Heather is so deserving and has a great story to share and help inspire others in pursuing a higher education degree. KAYLA AHLSTRAND

Kayla Ahlstrand, a recent University League scholarship recipient, grew up in a northwest suburb of Chicago (Grayslake, IL), and graduated from Lake Forest College in 2012 with a Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience and Biology. She has always been drawn to science, but her passion for neuroscience grew over her 4 years of undergrad. She worked on two different research projects on campus:

one on cellular mechanisms behind Parkinson’s disease and another on learning and memory.

Kayla actually did not decide to pursue a career in veterinary medicine until her junior year, as she contemplated between human medicine and research. Following graduation, she worked as a technician at a small animal hospital for 2 years and completed her prerequisite courses. UW-Madison was Kayla’s top choice for veterinary school. She worked with a few veterinarians who attended the school, and they always spoke so highly of the program. Besides being in a beautiful area, the UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine excels in research, education, and clinical practice. Coming from a very small liberal arts college, Kayla was a little nervous about coming to such a large university; however, the

JANE RYU Jane Ryu is a recent University League General Sophomore Scholarship recipient. She is currently a sophomore in the Biochemistry undergraduate program. Jane plans to pursue a career in the healthcare field. At this point, she is exploring a variety of options in health care. In order to do so, Jane joined the pre-medicine club, Wisconsin medical society (WMS) and was selected as a board member for this past semester. Jane is definitely thinking about becoming a physician. Through the Wisconsin medical society, she planned a health care seminar that is scheduled for this month (March). Jane is also involved in a research lab where she studies biochemical pathways. She was invited to speak about her research last January. She hopes that these experiences will help her to solidify her plans after graduation. Jane thoroughly loves UW-Madison where she says that there are so many exciting opportunities.

Jane was born in New York. When she was ten years old her parents moved to South Korea where she was raised until she left for College. The move back to the United States has been a difficult one as many students are

veterinary medicine community, including her amazing professors and classmates, makes Kayla feel right at home. Kayla’s major is small animal veterinary medicine. Her dream job would be a veterinary neurologist. It would be the perfect profession that merges two of her greatest passions.

The average debt of veterinary students is about $150,000 to $300,000, not including any previous debt from undergraduate school. As Kayla is paying my own way through graduate school and has debt from undergrad school, she is extremely grateful for this scholarship. Furthermore, with the veterinary school’s proposal tremendously to increase tuition, any amount that lowers this burden is significant and greatly appreciated! We wish Kayla all of the best in the future! born in another country and then move to the United States. Jane is the opposite!! Jane says that her move has been very exciting and different. She enjoys the diverse community of Madison and she has some new amazing friends. Jane is sincerely thankful for this scholarship award.
