Greetings from your Board of Vice Presidents! We hope you are having a wonderful summer. As we did last year, we 6 will be carrying out the presidential duties as a group. You can approach any one of us with questions and we will take care of your concerns. See the list below. This year promises to be great! We are pleased and proud to welcome seven new members to the board. They are:

Rhonda BennettEllen Forman

Ellen FredbergDale Golden

Nancy Solowsky

Roberta YellenEllen Zarrow-Nissenbaum

They are enthusiastic hard workers with lots of ideas for us, and will infuse us with new energy. We look forward to working with them. This year will see a new campaign. Since Brandeis’ founding the BNC has been there to support the University’s most pressing needs. Brandeis’ world renowned scientists are at the forefront of addressing today’s biggest chal-lenges which includes making new discoveries toward the understanding and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, ALS and Autism. To ensure that Brandeis continues to produce cut-ting-edge neuroscience research, we must upgrade our microscopes to keep up with technological advances. We are launching the BNC Magnify the Mind Campaign to raise $500,000 over the next year to buy a high-speed two-photon microscope. This new microscope will enable Brandeis researchers to observe brain activity in real time with the goal of discovering the causes of neurodegenerative diseases so that we can find treatments for those suffering from this global epidemic. All of our fundraising efforts this year will support this worthy goal. There is so much to look forward to this year - study groups, both old and new, potpourris, Art Adventures, so many chances to see and do new things, with friends old and new too. We will have an author’s lunch with Meredith Goldstein, again at Sky Restaurant in Norwood, two very different potpourris, and an ethnic lunch at a restaurant where the food will remind you of your grandmother’s home cooking. Our opening meeting will kick off the year on Wed. Sept. 26th. Due to the holidays all falling on Mondays this year, note that the meeting is on a Wednesday, a new day, but in the same place as always, Temple Beth Avodah. Remember the fun jewelry sale we had last year? Well, this year we are doing bags and scarves! So find those pocketbooks, tote bags and scarves that you no longer use and share them for a good cause. An invitation to all our new members - come and discover us! You may have joined for one purpose, but there is much more to us. Try a different study group, come on an Art Adventure, enjoy a potpourri. Are you hesitant because you don’t know anyone else going? Contact any one of us and we will make sure you have someone to go with or to greet you when you get there. We want you to take advantage of all we have to offer. We look forward to seeing you!

POTPOURRI

Barbra Streisand: Hello Gorgeous!Friday, Oct. 26th, 10am coffee, 10:30 program, at the Women’s Studies Research Center, 515 South Street

Presented by Bruce HambroBarbra Streisand is one of a kind—totally unique! There has never been any other entertainer quite like her. She is the best-selling female recording art-ist of all time. She has won every award that show business can bestow: Grammy, Tony, Emmy, Oscar...you name it. She was the poor, ugly duckling Jewish girl from Brooklyn who bucked the odds to become the most popular and powerful female star in Hol-lywood. Ms. Streisand has been ensconced in the American public consciousness for over half a cen-tury, ever since her 1963 ground-breaking The Barbra Streisand Album.

This program covers Barbra’s unlikely and glorious rise to fame---from her stressful childhood living in an over-crowded Brooklyn apartment----to the gid-

dy heights of an histor-ic and legendary show business career. In this audio-visual lecture, the audience will hear Bar-bra’s signature songs: Happy Days are Here Again... People... The Way We Were... Send

in the Clowns... and many more. Hundreds of imag-es will be seen during the power-point presentation as well as video clips from concerts, TV shows and movies such as Funny Girl, Yentl and A Star is Born.

Bruce Hambro is a cultur-al historian and former entertainment industry ex-ecutive. Most likely, you have seen him perform one of his many varied programs for your community or organization in the past. His biographical audio-vi-sual lectures lovingly review “Legends of the Great American Songbook”. These entertaining, educa-tional and interactive shows (sing-alongs are encour-aged!) cover such giants of show business lore as Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Dean Mar-tin, George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter and Irving Berlin. Come enjoy Bruce’s newest addition—Barbra Streisand---to his wonderful series about America’s most beloved singing and songwriting stars.

POTPOURRI

“Under The Soviet Shadow: Where History Meets Fiction”Friday, Oct. 12, 10am coffee, 10:30 program, at Temple Beth Avodah in Newton

On the Sickle’s Edge is a multi-generational Jewish family saga, told through the voices of three compelling char-acters: the endearing, scrappy South-African born Lena, transported to Latvia and later trapped in the USSR; her granddaughter Darya, a true Communist believer; and Steven, a painter from Boston who inadvertently stum-bles into the complex web of his family’s past. On the

Sickle’s Edge is a novel of assim-ilation, resilience, and cultural identity.

Emmy-award winning writer Neville Frankel discusses the well-researched family history that inspired his latest work of historical fiction, On the Sickle’s Edge. The novel has earned acclaim as a Finalist for the prestigious Book Club Award of

the 2017 National Jewish Book Awards and is regarded by many readers as a companion piece to Amor Towles’ A Gentleman in Moscow. The talk sheds deep insight into the author’s creative process as he discusses the delicate

balance between integrating historical detail while remaining faithful to the family lore that inspired his novel.

A native of Johannesburg, South Africa, Neville immigrated to Bos-ton with his family at the age of 14 He is the author of three works of historical fiction: The Third Power about the transformation of Rho-

desia to Zimbabwe; an apartheid-era novel, Bloodlines; and On the Sickle’s Edge.

He is also the recipient of an Emmy for his work on a Frontline/BBC Documentary. In addition to being a con-tributor to The Huffington Post and The Good Men Proj-ect, Neville’s work has been published in the LA Times, Signature Magazine, and Lit Hub. His speaking tours have taken him to more than a hundred venues across the country. In addition to his passion for writing and re-searching his family history, Neville is an avid painter and mountain hiker.
