Ravenwood High Student Becomes Youngest Guardian AngelEreann, a junior at Ravenwood High
School, recently challenged herself
to live a better story. Ereann gathered
her family, friends, schoolmates and
church members together to collect
enough money to become the youngest
Guardian Angel in the history of
SHFS. She raised funds from selling
tickets through Belk’s charity
event. For a $5 donation,
customers received
a ticket admitting
them to the sale and
receiving discounts
from 20-70 percent on
items throughout the
store. She also held
bake, lollipop and
garage sales. “This is
one of my biggest
accomplishments,”
Ereann noted.
“Raising three
thousand dollars
might not seem like
a lot of money, but
when you are selling
most of your products
for one dollar, it takes a lot of work to
raise that amount.” It was important
to her to choose an organization that
keeps the whole family together
because family means so much
to her. Throughout the process,
her mom, friends and grandma
were instrumental in helping
her achieve her goal. “SHFS
provides support for
families that have
bad had luck in
life and need
someone to
carry them
through,”
Ereann said.
“When all
else fails,
you always
have your
family to be there
for you.”
Single Mom Proud of Accomplishments
Safe Haven Family Shelter was the
best thing to happen to me and
my son. Before I came to SHFS, I was
a single mother struggling to make
it. I moved to Nashville and was all
alone until I came to SHFS. Because
of them, I obtained my CNA license
and have been at the same job for
a little over seven months. I have a
new car and nice apartment. My son
and I are happy now. I have to say if
it wasn’t for SHFS, I believe we would
be back in Arkansas. They offered
so many opportunities and classes
to help me live my life on my own. I
wasn’t pushed out into the world
unprepared. I am so proud to say that.
I have gained so much from SHFS. I
went from having only a couple of
little things to having a fully furnished,
two-bedroom apartment. Everything
in my apartment is paid for, and I don’t
owe money—not even on my car. The
budgeting classes came in handy! I
moved out of the shelter in October
and made sure Thanksgiving and
Christmas were in my own home. The
staff at SHFS knew I could do it on my
own even when I got cold feet. I would
like to thank Ms. Jennifer and the staff
at SHFS for all the love and support
you have blessed me and my family
with through this experience.

Safe Haven Purchases Property to Grow Family Services
A mong the many exciting
recent developments at SHFS,
I am pleased to announce
that we purchased a new property
for our Transitional Housing program.
Transitional living is one of the several
options for families needing time to
overcome many barriers toward self-
sufficiency. Families living in one of our
eight houses scattered across Nashville
have at least one year to pay off debts,
finish an educational/certification goal,
save funds and build personal and
professional assets, all while paying
minimal rent and receiving critical case
management and therapeutic services.
Joyce and I have known each other
since our children were in high school.
We attended the same church, school
functions and neighborhood ladies’
social groups. In total, we’ve know each
other since 1990; over 20 years!
Since I love to cook, I always hope to
serve food that the families really like,
something that they don’t get very often
and hopefully, food that brings a smile.
One for my favorite memories at Safe
Haven Family Shelter would be watching
a sweet girl who came back for a third
helping of greens instead of dessert. She
said they were her favorite!
Because SHFS is the only organization
that houses the whole family, the need
is great. I believe that families should
stay together as much as they can, to
help support each other and to provide
a secure environment for their children.
Separation only adds more anxiety to an
already stressful time.
Once belonging to the Oasis center,
the home is located in the heart of
Berry Hill, has a history of serving low
income individuals and enjoys a positive
relationship within the neighborhood.
We purchased the property with
funds from the Tennessee Housing
Development Agency, The Joe C. Davis
Foundation and David and Karen Conrad.
The week following, we received word
that SHFS was one of four local agencies
to receive an MDHA New Project Grant
for $75,728. The funding will allow us
to renovate the property into a duplex
to serve two families, provide services,
and pay for operational expenses
such as utilities, maintenance and
repairs. Living
in high quality
in a community
with plentiful
employment
possibilities,
easy access to
the bus line, and
vast commercial
and rental amenities within walking
distance is a blessing to our families.
Our Berry Hill property makes us very
proud to expand this much needed
housing option. Thank you to our
donors for supporting our vision.
I think everyone should volunteer to
help someone. Giving and helping is an
expectation for everyone to share their
time and talents. We choose SHFS as one
of our volunteer opportunities because
it is a direct hands-on experience. The
hands-on experience is the “time” part
and the cooking is the “talent” part. We
enjoy volunteering our time at SHFS. It
is a happy place, filled with laughter and
support.
