The result would be addional mine tailings at the site. With the current tailings pond approaching capacity, and the exisng convenonal wastewater treatment plant directly in the expansion zone, the mine operator sought a large scale treatment system to address the mine’s growth – and the 8,000 person commu- nity supporng the project. Upon consideraon of various opons, the global mining company selected newterra’s modular Membrane Biore- actor (MBR) system for the site. The key factors in the choosing newterra for the project was the scalability and portabil- ity of our container-based soluon. The system is deployable in discrete 3-con- tainer treatment trains that can be add- ed if the mining community grows, and later removed if capacity requirements decrease. This modular design also al- lows the treatment plant to be moved in the future without leaving any assets in the ground. Capacity: 1,500 m3/day Installed 2013 Equally important to making the mine a more sustainable operaon is new- terra’s innovave MicroClear™ UF membranes. They treat sewage to the high standards established by the World Health Organizaon (WHO), thus allowing reuse for irrigaon, dust control and other applicaons, or di- rect discharge to the local river. The 26-container system features sludge thickening and dewatering equipment that allows on-site man- agement. The dry filter cakes could ulmately be use as ferlizer for local agriculture. The sophiscated system also incorporates newterra’s advanced telemetry for monitoring, control and trouble-shoong half way around the world.
