Lumbini-Kapilvastu Day Movement
As part of the World Peace Movement, Nepalese people living in different parts of the world in 2009 decided to commemorate Lumbini and Kapilavastu, the birthplace of Gautam Buddha, by observing Kapilvastu Day as a global holiday in order to spread the Buddha’s peace and nonviolence messages all over the world. The Buddha is revered as a Messenger of Peace. He is also known as the Light of Asia who is actually the Light of the world as his message of peace and nonviolence has become more relevant as the world is facing the problems of violence today. The world today has become more violent than ever before. Therefore, we have decided to spread the messages of the Buddha all over the world by observing Kapilvastu Day every year. Originally, on December 1, 1896, Dr Anton Führer, a German archaeologist, had
discovered the Buddha’s birthplace when he found the Asoka Pillar at Lumbini. Even
though this site was first discovered by Khadga Shamsher Rana before Führer had
reached the site but Führer is credited for this discovery as he brought it into light and made it known to the international community.
The Asoka Pillar is the most important evidence that Buddha was born in Lumbini. Therefore, it was decided to observe December 1 as Kapilavastu Day. The historic Kapilavastu, located close to Lumbini, is considered to be another holy pilgrimage for the Buddhists since it was the place where the Buddha grew up and which he later renounced seeking to understand the cause of human sufferings. The result of years of excavations and researches by numerous national and international teams has been that Tilaurakot is the historic Kapilvastu which UNESCO should certify as another World Heritage, next to Lumbini.
After celebrating the Kapilvastu Day as the Global Day for the first time in history on December 1, 2009, we discussed on how to keep the program going ahead. Hence a 21 member committee has been formed as the Kapilvastu Day Movement Global Committee under Engr. Ram Kumar Shrestha’s leadership. The committee is constituted as follows:

Major Activities and Achievements: 1. Correction by Google: After giving pressure through lots of Facebook Groups,
Google corrected its wrong information on Buddha’s birth place. Before this Google was showing UP, India as Buddha’s birth place.
After our voice Google corrected its mistake. Now it shows Nepal as Birthplace of the Buddha. Before this it was showing India as Birthplace of the Buddha.

3. Pressure to Fareed Zakaria: Fareed Zakaria, the Editor of Newsweek International and the host of CNN’s Fareed Zakaria’s GPS, in his book “The Post-American World” introduced Buddha as an Indian. Kapilvastu Day Movement mobilized people in different ways to give him pressure to apologize and correct his mistake.
4. Pressure to PBS: PBS is made up of more than 350 local public noncommercial
TV stations and reaches more than 115 million people each month through on-air
and online content, and, increasingly, in other platforms. PBS content is available
on air through its local stations and, for many programs, online, in the form of
podcasts, blogs, video clips, and full episodes.
PBS was going to release a documentary “The Buddha” on 7th of April, 2010
exploring the life of Prince Siddhartha, today know as the Buddha, whose
spiritual quest for enlightenment gave birth to Buddhism. The problem with the
documentary was that that was with misinformation about Buddha. Kapilvastu
Day Movement mobilized people to make correction in the misinformation before
to release the documentary.
5. Petition on Informing the World about the True Birth Place of the Buddha:
Petition on Informing the World about the True Birth Place of the Buddha was
started to collect signature on 14th of July, 2010 – immediately after forming the
first phase of Global Committee. It was the preparation to submit petition to the
Prime Minister.
6. Petition submission to the Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal: Petition
was submitted to the Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal on 12th of August,
2010. Dr. Arzu Deuba Rana, former minister Rajendra Shrestha, MP Dip Kumar
Upadhyaya, Prof. Dr. Kavitaram Shrestha, from Global Committee Laxman Puri
(Nepal), Raj Shrestha (Nepal), Om Gurung (Japan) and Santosh Neupane
(Belgium) were in the team.
Major issues raised in the petition: 1. Emphasis to deal with Indian government on Fake Lumbini issue 2. Using diplomatic missions to sort out misinformation in course books of many
countries on Buddha birth place.
7. Book published: A research oriented novel based on the life of Buddha “MAHAVINISKRAMANKA ASWIKRIT PAILA” written by Dr. Prof. Kavitaram Shrestha, was published by the Movement..
8. Role in Correcting Misinformation in British Museum: After detail news in Kantipur on October 29 and 2nd of November 2011 and news in Nepalipatra British Museum on its Facebook page at 3:46 pm on 4th of Novemebr, 2011 notified: “In light of recent comments about the Buddha’s birthplace, we would like to reassure you that the Museum does not state that the Buddha was born in India. We state that the Buddha was born into a small kingdom that flourished in north-eastern India in about 500 BC. The kingdom covered a reasonably wide area in the northern plains, along with several others of the time. When the Buddha’s mother was expecting, the family decided that she should proceed north to the hills to give birth. This she did, but gave birth along the way, in Lumbini at foot of the Himalayas. The site of Lumbini is in Nepal about 20 miles from the modern border with the Republic of India. If you are aware of an instance where the incorrect information is written or posted please let us know where so we can look into it. You are welcome to leave comments about this subject on the main wall but please note that comments about this subject on unrelated posts will be deleted as they are off topic. Please see further information about commenting in the info tab.”
After British Museum notice Kapilvastu Day Movement made news and
circulated through Facebook big groups and emails requesting to leave their
comments on British Museum page to give pressure to mention Lumbini, Nepal
as Buddha’s birth place. When there were more than 1,100 comments British
Museum at 11.05 am on 7th of November notified with the decision to mention
Lumbini, Nepal as Buddha’s birth place:
“In the spirit of clarity, the British Museum wants to be unambiguous and accurate on this issue – the Buddha was born in Lumbini which is in Nepal. The Museum is always seeking to find the clearest way to put past history into understandable statements in the Museum, on our website and in our online records. Thank you for your feedback. Please be assured this is an important issue to the Museum and has been passed on to our curatorial team to establish where further clarity in the Museum and online may be required.”

9. Honoring journalist Nabin Pokharel: Nabin Pokharel, the Editor of
Nepalipatra, created favorable environment to correct misinformation on Buddha
birth place in British Museum due to his detail news in Kantipur and Nepalipatra
attracting attention of Museum and other concern bodies. As every year 6,000
thousands visitors from all over the world visit the Museum, the decision to
correct the information is Great achievement. Kapilvastu Day Movement,
therefore, honored him while celebrating 3rd Kapilvastu Day in UK.

Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn't learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn't learn a little, at least we didn't get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn't die; so, let us all be thankful. Buddha
Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it. Buddha
All that we are is the result of what we have thought. If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain follows him. If a man speaks or acts with a pure thought, happiness follows him, like a shadow that never leaves him. Buddha
All things appear and disappear because of the concurrence of causes and conditions. Nothing ever exists entirely alone; everything is in relation to everything else. Buddha
A family is a place where minds come in contact with one another. If these minds love one another the home will be as beautiful as a flower garden. But if these minds get out of harmony with one another it is like a storm that plays havoc with the garden. Buddha.
Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense. Buddha
All that we are is the result of what we have thought. If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain follows him. If a man speaks or acts with a pure thought, happiness follows him, like a shadow that never leaves him. Buddha
