February 2017 No. 515 2
Mark Van Doren
As many of you are aware, participation in
CYC’s racing program, as well as the number
of active sailors in general, has been declining for years. Last year an average of
only seven boats competed in each of the
four club regattas (Rocky
Top, Wind Jammin’, 4th of
July and the Fall Regatta). Three other CYC regattas
were canceled due to lack
of wind. Additionally, no
youth skippers competed
and only two dinghies showed up to compete in
club regattas. The Dinghy
Series and the summer
High Water Series for
keelboats died out. On January 5th,
approximately 20 of CYC’s
active racers met to
discuss changes aimed at
reinvigorating CYC racing. The 1st and 2nd Vice
Commodores have been
working to solicit inputs
from the CYC racing
community. Our objective is to encourage more people to race at CYC
events with an emphasis on recruiting youths
and newbies into the racing fleet. Towards
that end, some of the changes to the CYC
racing program that you’ll see in 2017 are:
1) The current Low Water Series (LWS) that
is currently in progress will run through the
weekend of April 8-9. Members participating in race committee duty during the LWS, from
January 1st onward, will get credit for
fulfilling their mandatory race
committee duty. Members who
serve more than once will get credit for work hours. The LWS
is now a fully supported CYC
racing series, however, the
participants will continue to
determine how the series is administered. Next season, the
LWS may change its name to the
Winter Keelboat Series.
2) We’ll add two new keelboat
series in 2017. The Spring Keelboat Series will begin on
May 13 and be run every
Saturday through June 24th.
Although the current LWS
practice of deciding on Thursday whether races will be run on
Saturday or on Sunday
depending on the weather
forecast works very well,
implementing that policy during the remainder of the year would require club

members assigned to race committee duty to commit to covering a whole weekend. Since few of us would be receptive to that, the two new keelboat series will race on Saturdays only. Saturday was chosen over Sunday because more club members in attendance at our January 5th meeting favored Saturday.
3) The Fall Keelboat Series will begin on September 10th and will run every Saturday
through October 14th.
4) Now that we’ll have
three keelboat series at
CYC, the Low Water/High Water naming convention
doesn’t really fit anymore,
so next season we’ll plan to
rename the LWS the Winter
Keelboat Series.
5) Dinghy racing will be
back at CYC. It’s important
that the club support dinghy
racing because many youth
and new adult skippers’ first attempt at racing will
be in smaller boats. It’s
just more practical, less
intimidating and more cost
effective than starting out with a keelboat. Youth and
newbies feed the club
membership and pump new
blood into the racing
community. The experienced racers are
excited about new sailors
joining our ranks and joining us on the course.
The Spring Dinghy Series will race every other
Thursday afternoon starting on April 20th and end on June 29th.
6) A Fall Dinghy Series will begin on
Thursday, September 7th, and will continue on
every Thursday afternoon through September
28th. The series will then shift to Sundays for the next two weekends since daylight will be
getting short. The last Fall Dinghy Series race
will be on Sunday, October 15th.
7) Other than the 4th of July Regatta, there will be no scheduled racing during the months
of July and August when we traditionally have
little wind.
8) The CYC Regatta schedule is as follows:
UT Collegiate Regatta: March 24-26
Rocky Top: April 29-30
Admiral Farragut (Thistles
only): May 6-7
Memorial Day: May 29
4th of July: July 4
Labor Day: September 2-3
Fall Regatta: October 21-22
9) Subject to board
approval, all CYC Regattas will be open regattas. This
means that non-members are
welcome to compete although
they may be charged a fee.
Regattas present good opportunities for sailors from
other clubs to visit and for us
to recruit new members. All
CYC Regattas, with the
exception of the UT and Admiral Farragut Regattas,
will feature keelboat and dinghy classes as
long as three of each class are participating.
That includes Rocky Top.
10) Subject to board approval, participants in CYC Regattas and Series events will be

required to show proof of liability insurance and current registration.
I sincerely hope that many of you will come out and enjoy the camaraderie, competition and
excitement that racing brings. If you haven’t raced before, we hope that you’ll give it a try. Racing will improve your skills and adds a whole new level of fun to your favorite sport. If you
have any questions or comments, please email me at [email protected].
I look forward to seeing you on the water soon,

CYC Racers
For the upcoming race season, CYC is requesting that racers put into use, the raceQs’ application. For those that have Smartphones, this is an application that can be downloaded and utilized to show the progress for those on shore during the race, with a 5-minute delay, and for the racers after the race. The App is free of charge and has two modes for transmitting data. First mode – upload your data when you get back to the club house through the CYC wireless network- costs nothing. Second mode – upload your data in real time- cost does work on a very minimal data transmission and the cost is dependent on each members’ Phone Data Plan.
The following is a synopsis for the raceQs’ application that can also be found at www.raceqs.com.
EVALUATE AND IMPROVE YOUR SAILING PERFORMANCE
The raceQs’ tracker app records sailing data with your phone and creates a 3D replay of your race online. The 3D replay will show your boat and any other boats who were recording in your area. Select anyone in the replay to learn from the top performers in your fleet. Watch the replay with your crew and evaluate your race in the club, and at home online.
You can choose to upload your recorded tracks immediately over cell phone signal, or save them to upload over Wi-Fi. Turn on “Live Broadcast” and your friends can watch your race "live", on your raceQs’ journal page.
The raceQs’ app is more than just a tracking device. It also records the motion of your boat using the accelerometer and gyroscope in your phone. Watch your race replay to evaluate your tacking patterns, boat handling, heel angle, and more. It will change the way you race.
RACE ANALYTICS
Get more from your race replay
These days, there are a lot of choices for race tracking. raceQs’ incredible race analytics make us a top choice for many professional and serious club racers. We have the most advanced analytics on the market, including the only tool that will analyze your boat handling. raceQs also stands out with an automatic wind detection algorithm, and a unique visual analytics dashboard. Watch professional sailors analyze their races with raceQs’ in our video podcast series “Race To Win”. raceQs’ Analytics Features:
Create match-ups between any two boats

2017 CYC Winter Gathering
Even though the weather forecasters predicted some wet stuff on the evening of the 21st, it turned
out to be very pleasant both outside and inside for the 2017 CYC Winter Gathering!
Work Hour sign-up stations were set up before dinner, and attendees had a chance to select
preferred dates for Race Committee, Facilities maintenance, and the many Social events planned for
2017. Just to recap and as stated in the Handbook- “ Each Active and Young Active member is
obligated to provide a minimum of fifteen (15) hours of work each year toward the maintenance
and operation of the Club.” These 15 hours can be completed in several ways, including, Facility
maintenance, serving on CYC and CSC committees, doing more than one RC duty, and assisting
with designated Youth activities and Social events. These hours are prorated based upon the time
of the year the members joined. Race Committee requirements- “Each Active, Young Active, Senior
and Student member is required to serve on a race committee at least once per year.” So, if you
were not able to attend the event on January 21st, but would like to see about selecting specific
dates for fulfilling these obligations, you can contact the following members– Race Committee,
Mark Van Doren at [email protected]; Facilities, Vic Tyler at
[email protected]; Social, Catherine Trapp at [email protected].
But, don’t worry! More information will be sent out throughout the year regarding Facilities and
Social Work Hour needs, and when Mark finalizes the Race Committee schedule, it will be
distributed.
After sign-ups, the party go-ers feasted on salad, lasagna and scrumptious desserts, while listening
to music provided by Left-Foot Dave!

During a brief music timeout, 2nd Vice Commodore Rodney Meryweather presented awards for
the 2016 Racing Series. Kudos to these recipients:
AND, to top off the night, Jerry de Laurentis and Carol Rech shared the contents of their “I can’t do
without this stuff on an overnight boat trip” Boat Tote. Some of their “must haves” included:
cotton for ear plugs (in case Jerry snores!), song book and harmonica for a boat tradition of music
to drown out bathroom noise, poo-pourri (for obvious reasons!), duck tape, a rosary, a Klutz book
to learn knots, Caption Cargo case for liquor, big bottle of Ibuprofen for the next morning,
deodorant, toilet paper, sail repair items, fog horn, cheese and crackers, cards, a small sewing kit
and coffee pot. And, Carol brought her trusty sword to ward off any pirate attacks in the night!
Of course, we cannot forget those great people who helped put it on, check us in, served food and
cleaned up!

Low Water Series for 2017
Well a new year of racing is upon us. Hopefully, the new
Winter/Fall LWS will see less snow, and freezing temperatures.
One can only hope.
For 2016, thirteen LWS races were conducted, with 17 skippers
racing in one or more of the races. John Tyner, in his Holder
20, “Heathen,” leads both the Fleet and the Spinnaker Division.
While, Chuck Meyer, in his Santana 20, “Wind Dance,” is
leading the Non-Spinnaker Division.
2017 also brings some new and exciting changes for the LWS.
As a result of the efforts of our 1st and 2
nd Vice Commodores,
Mark Van Doren and Rod Meryweather, the LWS, effective
January 1st 2017, is now considered a Club sponsored event.
One of the most significant consequences of this change is
that any Club member performing RC Duty for the LWS will be
considered as having met their
annual required CYC Race
Committee Duty. Thus, any additional race committees they
serve on during the year will generate Club work hours, that
can go towards satisfying the CYC Member Handbook
requirement for annual work hours.
So, don’t be shy, contact John Storey, (Keelboat Fleet
Captain), [email protected], to see if there are some LWS
RC assignments still available for 2017. A personal boat is not required, as in the past, the
LWS now uses the Club’s Committee Boat, and Safety Boat to conduct LWS races.
For those not familiar with the LWS, races will continue from now
until April 8 or 9. So, lots of sailing yet to come, especially as the
weather begins to moderate to warmer temps. For those looking
to crew, just send an e-mail to John Storey several days before
the scheduled weekend races. John will send it out as a
distribution e-mail to all CYC Keelboats skippers, and ask any
skipper needing crew to respond directly back to you.
The LWS is a great way to have fun, and get out on the water. So,
get rid of those winter time blues, and come out and sail.
See ya on the water!

Asked how he slept after losing the first race of the 1974 America’s Cup, Sir James Hardy replied, “Like a baby. I woke up every two hours and cried.”
Up that rigging, you monkeys. Break out those sails and let them fill with the wind to carry us all to freedom.

Sailors have many superstitions, some for luck and some that are bad luck. Here’s just a few! You may want to avoid whistling while aboard a ship, it can be considered a challenge to the winds and may whistle up an unwanted storm. The only case that may be an exception to this superstition is if you would like the winds to strengthen and fill your sails, just don’t whistle too long or too hard! Aside from this, there was one exception to the “no whistling rule”; the cook was allowed to whistle because this was a good sign he wasn’t eating all of the food. If you plan on packing a picnic on your next boating adventure, you may want to avoid
putting bananas in your basket. Bananas have long been considered unlucky on a ship, for many reasons. Most commonly, bananas are known for being slippery, and we don’t want to hear of anyone slipping overboard! Back in the 1700’s ships would transport banana cargo from one port to another, and because bananas spoil so quickly the ships were always in a rush to get to their destination, therefore, fisherman never caught anything while bananas were on board. Ships carrying bananas were the most common to get lost on their journey as well. Hang onto your hats when on board…or maybe not. It is said that when a hat falls overboard it is an omen that the tr ip will be a long one. If it’s a beautiful day and you are out on an exciting adventure, this may be a welcome omen for you. Here’s a funny superstition – Scottish fisherman would begin their fishing venture by tossing one of the crew members overboard and then “catching” him. This was said to encourage the fish to be caught.
