Dance forall agesand abilities

Since 1975 Ludus Dance has played a unique role in the development of dance in England - leading the way in dance education and promoting an inclusive community dance ethos for the people of Lancashire and beyond.

LUDUS DANCE

AT 40!

Page 2: Ludus Dance Studio Programme - Summer Term 2015

The year 2015 represents a significant milestone for Ludus Dance, as we celebrate 40-years since the organisation was first founded. Chris Thomson, Lesley Merwitzer, Penny Greenland, Anthony Peppiatt, Pauline Marshall, Nigel Charters and Julie Culshaw founded Ludus Dance as a performance and touring co-operative in 1975. As the first professional UK company to specialise in Dance in Education, this group of young teachers and artists all recognised the importance of making and taking dance to young people in their own environment – the school.

Over the years since its inception, Ludus Dance has continued to grow, diversify and in some instances change its core offer for Lancaster, Lancashire and the North West. In the early 80’s, with growing popularity in dance, the organisation initiated a community dance strand to its bow - working with local people and communities. This focus on expanding opportunities for people to participate in dance was to become - and remains today - one of the key principles that governs our programme of projects and activities.

We are also proud to have seen some famous names of the dance and choreography world through our doors to collaborate and work with us - Wendy Houston, Nigel Charnock, Yael Flexer, TC Howard and Ben Wright to name but a few!

In response to changing circumstances and a contraction in public spending on the arts, Ludus Dance changed its legal identity in 2011 to become a registered charity; re-structured and streamlined to be more cost effective. But our cultural education, community ethos and commitment to championing access to dance for everyone – regardless of age, ability or background – remains resolute.

The coming year will see us celebrate our 40th anniversary in a number of ways. Yes, we’ll be looking back and reflecting on great memories and past achievements. At the same time, we’ll be looking forward to our future aspirations and ambitions for nurturing and supporting great dance in the region - whether this be through initiatives, workshops, bespoke projects or artist development. Whilst planning is still in the early stages, look out for news of the following initiatives:

#Roaring40 - It wouldn’t be a birthday without a party! We hope to stage a fun 40’s themed event at our Assembly Rooms studio, incorporating a series of dance workshops for the people of Lancaster and Morecambe followed by a themed party with live music and dance.

#CultureSponge - An opportunity for a group of passionate young people from Ludus Youth Dance Company and our Young People’s Forum to visit the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

#BayWaves - Working in partnership with The Bay Radio and Morecambe Carnival, we have plans to develop original work with local young people to perform at the Carnival.

Ludus Dance is proud to have played a key role in Lancashire’s artistic and cultural fibre for the last 4 decades. We are truly grateful for the generous support we have received over this period – financial and otherwise – from local public bodies, businesses and many committed and passionate individuals. Here’s to the next 40 years!
