Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture :Changing Role of Extension
Themes and sub-themes
Growth in the agricultural sector has contributed strongly to economic growth in India over the past several decades. Yet improvements in nutrition remains a major concern. Increasing staple crop yields and investing in increasing agricultural production has enabled the country to achieve food security. However, high rates of underweight and stunted children, leaving them vulnerable to the chronic and often irreversible effects of poor nutrition have to be resolved. Agriculture has great potential to alleviate poverty and improve the food and nutrition situation in vulnerable rural communities. While food security may increase the total quantity of food energy consumed – typically via increased production and consumption of staple foods – only nutritional security can guarantee the quality and diversity of food necessary for good health and nutritional status. Programs aimed solely at increasing production, raising incomes and increasing energy intake will not reduce malnutrition as effectively as programs that also recognize the importance of diet quality and diversity. In addition, to maximize the efficiency of nutrition security initiatives, agricultural interventions should include strategies to increase nutrition education, empower women through sensitization and optimize the use of household resources. Nutritional security should be a priority in all areas where food security is a challenge.
Agricultural advances are mainly measured in terms of how successfully they narrow the gap between current and potential production yields. Achieving success in nutritional security as well as food security also requires narrowing the “nutrition gap”. Narrowing this gap first requires increasing availability and access to the foods necessary for a healthy diet and ensuring that intake of those foods increases.
The structure and policies of institutions that contribute to and influence agricultural development need to be reshaped with the values, behaviors, gender relations, and social norms of societies in which they are situated. Maximizing the benefits from agricultural growth for smallholder farmers and the economy at large depends on understanding these influences and designing programs that take them into account.
thThe 8 National Extension Education Congress has, thus,
chosen the topic“Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture: Changing Role of Extension”to provide a professional forum for multi-stakeholder deliberations on the role and readiness of agricultural extension systems in promoting nutrition-sensitive agriculture. Following themes have been identified for intensive exchange of knowledge, good practices and governance related issues to evolve a systematic policy framework for agricultural extension systems to promote nutrition-sensitive agriculture
• Innovations in nutrition sensitive agriculture and allied sectors
• Gender and nutrition perspective in achieving holistic agricultural
growth• Technology adaptation mechanisms for nutritional security• Informatics and cyber technologies for promoting nutritional
security
1. Innovations, technologies and good extension practices to
