Lucy Lyon: Together, Alone

Lucy Lyon’s figurative glass sculptures explore themes of human interaction and individuality. With exquisite detail, Lyon’s cast glass subjects capture nuances of the human form with subtlety and grace, typically born of a strong narrative impulse. Many of her evocative works include figures in urban settings that express a state of mind through gesture. First sculpted in clay and then cast in glass, Lyon’s sublime color choices and understated forms unfuse her work with a unique humanity. Alluding to contemporary urbanity and youthful independence, her exquisitely wrought figures encourage quiet reflection.

Lyon’s cast-glass sculptures forge elegant interpretations of the human figure with sophisticated beauty and vibrant color. Each piece contains an atmosphere open to personal

interpretation and suggestive of a narrative or story - settings the artist describes as “places where one can be in a private space while in public.” Lyon states that for her, “the greatest challenge and greatest satisfaction comes from sculpting the figures. I concentrate on subtle gestures that can tell a story.”

Lucy Lyon graduated in 1971 from Antioch college and studied at the renown Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington. She has taken a number of workshops across the country from well-known glass artists and her works have been exhibited in significant public institutions including: the Redding Museum of Art and History, Long Beach, CA; the Albuquerque Museum, Albuquerque, NM; and the New Mexico Museum of Art, Santa Fe, NM.
