Lucas Antony Cowan Bio

Lucas Antony Cowan serves as Public Art Program Director for the Maryland State Arts Council, through its Department of Business and Economic Development, a principal Department of the State of Maryland in Baltimore, MD, and Curator of Exhibits for Millennium Park Inc., in Chicago IL. In 2005, MPI invited Cowan to coordinate the large-scale installations in Millennium Parks prestigious outdoor Boeing Galleries. In 2006, Cowan created the Family Fun Festival, located in Millennium Park, which is a 13-week

festival; curated with Chicago’s popular museums and cultural organizations. Prior to his position with the City of Chicago, he served as Director of Pre-College Programming for the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD. During his tenure with Millennium Park he has curated and installed such large scale exhibition as Mark di Suvero/Millennium Park, A Conversation with Chicago: Contemporary Sculptures from China, Studio Translations: The Maquettes of Yvonne Domenge, Interconnected: The Sculptures of Yvonne Domenge and today new work by the renowned ceramist and sculptor Jun Kaneko. In 2010 he was named Senior Curator of Exhibits for the Chicago Office of Tourism and Culture, where he curated, designed and installed COTC’s largest and longest running exhibit, Morbid Curiosity: The Richard Harris Collection. Cowan most recently helped the state of Maryland pass legislation, requiring all new state construction, to include Public Art in their design and construction, adding Maryland to 23 other states and the District of Columbia to the list of state public art programs. A Detroit native, Mr. Cowan attended Chippewa Valley High School, and later attended the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD, where he studied Fiber and Material Studies. He also attended the Master’s program in Arts Administration at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago, IL. Mr. Cowan was a founding member of the AIDS Foundation of Chicago’s Junior Board, and received the Sydney Lake Memorial Award in Leadership in 2003.

Studio Translations: Maquettes of Yvonne Domenge Chicago Cultural Center 2010 Often referencing the natural world, Yvonne Domenge’s work reveals a fascination with form and geometry. Her large spheres defy gravity and space, conveying a rhythmic beauty and the sense of a larger universal order. Coinciding with Mexico's 2010 bicentennial celebrations, the models, drawings, and maquettes will preview the monumental sculptures to be installed in Millennium Park this spring and illustrate the complex behind-the-scenes process that goes into each work. This exhibition is presented by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Millennium Park, in cooperation with Millennium Park, Inc., and is sponsored by The Boeing Company and CONACULTA (The National Council for the Arts and Culture), with support from the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, the National Museum of Mexican Art, and the Consulate General of Mexico.

Millennium Park Family Fun Festival 2006 – Present The Family Fun Festival started at Millennium Park in 2006. Everyday beginning June through September from 10am – 3pm, free family performers and hands-on activities fill the Family Fun Tent. Since its inception, numbers of visitors have grown from 20,000 the first year to over 500,000 last year. Family Fun Performance Stage: Start your morning with Wiggleworms® instructors from the Old Town School of Folk Music as they lead young children in sing-alongs, circle dances and games. Chill out with story time during the Reading Circle then move to the grooves with live music and dance from some of the most notable names in local and regional entertainment. Family Fun Activity Zone: Take part in interactive activities and projects throughout the dat led by the area’s favorite museums and cultural organizations. The weekly-rotating series includes plenty of sights, sounds and tastes for all visitors, from making colorful Pop-inspired creations with the Art Institute of Chicago to crafting green inspirations with the Lurie Garden.
