Getting Greener with Every Mile
2
Are these some of the important challenges facing your business? Operating at the lowest possible cost
Stretching the life of valuable equipment assets
Making the operation run smoother, with less unplanned downtime
Reducing the amount of money spent on maintenance & equipment repairs
Increasing fuel efficiency
Fleet Challenges
Are you trying to meet all of these challenges while balancing the need
to be green at the same time?
3
Fleet Lubrication Management Proven methods are available that
can reduce costs, and at the same time impact a fleet’s carbon footprint.
The methods that we will discuss today are not new; in fact, they have been in practice for years. They are field-proven and have been used by hundreds of companies to help improve their fleet ROI.
So why has this not been in practice with companies for the past 50 years and adopted as standard for all companies to model?
Fleet Challenges
Safely extending the oil drain interval is the fastest
& easiest way to start making your fleet greener.
4
Most fleet operators change their oil too frequently.
Disposal of perfectly good oil is wasteful. New oil is expensive. The labor and time required
to change oil is expensive. There are costs for disposing of
the waste oil and the filters.
Engine oil is the lifeblood of a vehicle. Engine oil affects the performance and
efficiency of a vehicle while in use. Engine oil has a dramatic effect on how
long the working parts of an engine last.
Fleet Challenges
Fleet of 100 diesel trucks (with 6-gallon sumps), driving
100K miles per year, will dispose of 20,400 gallons of oil and 3,400 oil filters, based on
oil changes of 15K miles.
5
Why get rid of good oil due to the oldinterval-based thinking process?
Interval-based• Calendar – operating hours• Mileage – production
Condition-based (best practice method)• Base Oil – additive depletion• Contamination – wear metals
Two primary approaches to oil change schedules
Changing the internal mindset and culture is the key when moving to
a condition-based best practice model.

Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel & Internal Combustion Engine Fuel Issues Water Emulsification
Lack of Lubricity
Varnishing of Injectors
Soot ingression in oil (EGR)
Microbial growth
Waxing and freezing of fuel in delivery system
Fuel Quality
Improving fuel can have a dramatic impact on the
efficiency of the fuel burn, increasing miles per gallon.
8
Fuel Quality Corrosion Type of chemical wear Result in premature
failure of tanks and parts.
corrosion build up in a tanks can eventually break loose, travel into fuel lines and clog injector bodies and tips
LE’s has two Full Torque Diesel Fuel Improvers Full Torque 2411 &
2421 contain corrosion inhibition ingredients that protect metal equipment
This represents only one of many performance features found in Full Torque Diesel Fuel Improvers.
Full Torque™ Products May Solve Corrosion Problem in Petroleum Tanks Petroleum Equipment Institute Recent survey of fuel retailers, users and wholesalers 42 percent of respondents experienced a higher occurrence of
corrosion problems in tanks and equipment since the debut of the 2007 ultra-low sulfur diesel requirements.
PEI’s survey results did not pinpoint the corrosion issues only to the use of ULSD - PEI did identify it as part of the problem.
Rich Moskowitz, regulatory affairs counsel for the American Trucking Association, said, “… if only 10 percent reported problems (because of ULSD), this is something that the EPA and the petroleum industry need to pay attention to.”
The article mentioned that the other suspected causes of increased corrosion were use of additives and increased use of biodiesel blending.

VarnishingA fuel improver with an effective detergency package will clean and deter
varnishing of injectors. Clean and non-varnished injectors provide the most efficient burn for economy and engine life.
9
Fuel Quality
Improving the fuel burn and using a fuel improver can increase fuel efficiency by approximately 2.5%.
Soot ingression in diesel oil
10
A fuel improver uses all of the additives and solvents to control soot levels.
By having a more complete and proper fuel burn, the fuel improver limits the amount of soot generated.
The fuel improver does not allow the fuel soot to agglomerate like it would naturally.
Without treatment, agglomerated fuel soot becomes abrasive.
Fuel Quality
Keeping the oil clean by controlling the soot ingression will help extend the life of the oil.

Increase reliability
Extend equipment life
Extend lubricant life
Oil analysis … Is a preventative maintenance tool used
to detect unusual wear or contamination before it damages equipment.
Can be used to establish optimum oil change intervals, maximizing the lubricant’s life and providing superior economical return.
Is the key to safely extending oil drain intervals and the first critical step in moving from interval-based thinking to condition-based thinking.
The Foundation of Safely Extending Oil Drain Intervals
Oil Analysis
Extend asset life and reduce the amount of equipment taken out of service
and ending up in the landfill.
12
What does Oil Analysis look for?
Oil Analysis
• Iron• Chromium• Molybdenum• Aluminum• Copper• Lead• Cadmium• Silver• Nickel
• Viscosity• TBN
Wear Metals Additive Metals
Contaminant Metals
Nonmetallic Contaminants
• Magnesium• Calcium• Barium• Phosphorus
• Silicon• Potassium
• Fuel & fuel soot• Water
Physical Data
Oil analysis is recommended for extended drain interval applications, such as fleets, construction equipment and forklifts.
Oil analysis allows a fleet operator
to become proactive, which
means better management of
the waste stream of disposed oil.
13
Engine Oil
Many commodity engine oils are available on the market today.
Commodity engine oils are built to meet SAE & CJ4 specifications.
Technology exists to build engine oils that exceed SAE & CJ4 specifications.
Today’s commodity engine oils
The draining interval
recommended for today’s
commodity diesel engine oils
is every 15K miles.
14
Features of Enhanced Engine Oil Soot levels are controlled in late model engines.
Oil is up-treated with a protective additive package.
o Anti-wear protects moving parts.
o Detergency keeps engines clean and helps clean older engines.
Viscosity provides long-term protection and stability.
Proper detergent dispersants handle contaminants.
Low SAPS (sulfated ash, phosphorus & sulfur) reduce emissions.
An enhanced engine oil will provide superior engine protection and extend asset life.
Engine Oil
An enhanced engine oil can safely extend the oil drain interval by
3 to 5 times.
15
What other options are there for reducing waste and making a fleet run longer, adding more value to a well-run fleet lubricant program?Enhanced greases, transmission fluids and gear oils provide:
Reduction in corrosion wear and oxidation, allowing parts to last longer.
Friction reduction with moving parts, allowing the entire system to use fuel more efficiently.
Lubricants that will help lower operating temperatures, making parts last longer.
Lubricants that do not need to be serviced as frequently, reducing maintenance overhead costs.
Lubricants that do not need to be changed out as often, reducing disposal costs.
What other options are available for being greener and more efficient?
Additional Reliability
16
Additional Reliability
Keeping lubricants dry and contaminant-free will
dramatically increase lubricant life, as well as extend asset life.
Are you following best practices when it comes to lubricant storage and handling?
17
17
Many industrial manufacturers have adopted best lubricant reliability practices to help increase efficiency,
raise accountability standards, increase safety, and ultimately reduce the amount of lubricant waste.
Lubricant application Lubricant storage & handling Lubricant contamination & control Spill containment & management
These are huge opportunities for any fleet operator to implement a visual workplace that will raise lubricant standards and practices to a new level.
The reward will be a much safer, cleaner and more efficient working environment.
