THE LTS PROJECT In recent years, the major European Telecommunications Service providers have started their services on the basis of new technological background. In the frame of this project, complete replacement of traditional infrastructure of Magyar Telekom's PSTN network will be replaced by Multi-service access node (MSAN) equipment, in order to provide the POTS, ISDN and broad- band (e.g. xDSL) services in a single, common platform. This technological change however has raised a number of new problems installing and maintaining of the MSAN based copper networks. This is basically because in this environment, containing brand new network elements, numerous pre-existing maintenance auxiliary information will disappear, therefore, e.g. the process of line identification had to be placed on a completely new basis. For handling and solve all these problems, Magyar Telekom (Hungarian Telecom) have launched the project "Further development of maintenance and test equipment background at MSAN based networks". One of the most important results of this project is the LTS-210 Service Recognizer DSL Tester, which is the newest member of the LTS test instrument family that have been introduced more than ten years. This device, which was purchased almost half a thousand pieces since its release, has become a basic tool for efficient solving the daily installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting tasks of Magyar Telekom's national network. A number of recent surveys, conducted by Magyar Telekom, on the experience of the LTS-210’s usefulness showed an exceptionally high popularity of the device among the main users - the field technicians. The following two diagram speaks for itself.

LTS-210 SERVICE RECOGNIZER DSL TESTER The LTS-210 SERVICE RECOGNIZER DSL TESTER handheld device is a special tool for supporting the efficient solution of the tasks related to the installation and maintenance of the baseband (e.g. POTS, ISDN), as well as broadband (different DSL types) and line-multiplier (e.g. PCM11) systems operating on the copper distribution network. The measurement and investigation services, provided by the LTS-210 tester are as follows:

DETECTION – Recognition of the actual service on the line under test

xDSL MEASUREMENT – Provides the results of „physical layer” test of the connection under test

IDENTIFICATION – Information about the network and connection data of the line under test

SEARCH TONE RECOGNITION – Identification of the physical pairs

MODEM EMULATION – Provides test modem function

SPECIAL TEST AND MONITOR FUNCTIONS On the following pages the summary of functions and tests features can be found.

Detection This function means the recognition of the live service working on the line under test. This investigation is for all baseband, wideband and line-multiplier services (POTS, ISDN, S/HDSL, ADSL/2/2+, VDSL/2, PCM2/4/11), as well as the recognition of connected but inactive DSLAM port (due to the lack of subscriber modem). The Detection function is also suitable for quick and simple finding the “empty” pairs.

In which cases are these features useful and what are they used for? - for troubleshooting,

- for installation new service, - for implementation pairs changing, - for searching free pairs, - for preparing and controlling database

Operation:

Based on line voltage measurements and evaluation of actual signal frequency spectrum, using the services of a VDSL2 Broadcom test modem.

DSL MODEM Tests All commonly used „physical layer” parameters of the DSL connection can be measured by these tests, from the UP and DOWN maximum speed figure up to the CRC data. The graphically displayed typical spectral images, such as BIT or SNR curves, and a LAN- ping option also belong to these measurements type. In which cases are these features useful and what are they used for?

„LAN PING” function contains three ping address possibilities. The IP address you can see on the picture is the web address of the DSL speed test of Magyar Telekom.

MODEM Emulation

You can use the LTS-210’s „state of art” Broadband VDSL2 modem as a test MODEM. In which cases are these features useful and what are they used for?

- for the test of subscriber connection, - for controlling the endpoint MODEM - for fault location and troubleshooting.

Endpoint Identification This function provides access to the identification data (e.g. A-number, Port number etc.) of the connection under test, which are located and stored in the Service Centre. During the process, the identification data - requested from the service provider’s server - will be seen on the screen of the device, within seconds. This function of the device assumes the background database system developed and operated by Magyar Telekom.

Technical information provides by the present identification system:

- for accurate identification of the line under test, - for fault location and troubleshooting, - for workability investigation

Special Test and Monitor Functions By the help of these functions, disturbing free and continuous test is possible on the voltage as well as on the frequency domain. In case of frequency domain, the graphical display of the spectrum can be seen.

Search Tone Identification This function makes possible the reliable and quick identification of the copper pairs searched, by the help of low level Search Tone provided by the DSLAM equipment of the MSAN system.

The physical design is robust, water- and shock-resistant. Its screen is yellow monochrome display that is clearly visible in bright sunlight. The battery is high-capacity.”
