And for the favours, she used mason jars to make travel cups. “We drilled a hole in the lid and put a grommet with a straw, so it’s a reusable travel cup,” she explained. “Obviously, the things you make cost a little bit more money, but I like to be crafty, so I feel like if I hadn’t made something for the favours, people would have been wondering why I didn’t make something,” Pham added. “I felt like I was obligated to make something, but not in a bad way because I just like to make things.” She said it’s more personable when something is handmade, and she knew the guests would appreciate the effort and enjoy the day more. Pham, who got plenty of help from family and friends throughout the planning process, also made all the invitations. “We spent 10 hours one day making all of my invitations,” she recalled. “It took a lot longer than I expected, but I was so lucky to have friends who were happy to help. “It was fun,” she added, referring to making the favours and invitations. “But was a lot of trial and error because it didn’t quite go as planned.” Still, Pham was able to get everything back on track. She also had a local decorator take care of decorating the reception area upstairs at the Memorial Sports Centre. “But we also helped out, too,” she stressed, noting she was really happy with how the decor and her theme played out at the reception. “I really felt like people walked in and were blown away,” she enthused. “It looked so good in there. I didn’t know it could look like that. “It made me happy because I didn’t know what to expect.” Pham had gone to wedding receptions at the arena auditorium before. But for her own wedding that she worked so hard to plan, it was satisfying to see it all come together. “I knew it could look awesome in there, but I didn’t know if we had enough stuff to fill the room,” she admitted. Plus she set up things a little differently than a traditional reception. “We didn’t have a head table,” she noted. “We just had a table with our best man and maid of honour.” She indicated with seven bridesmaids and seven groomsmen, including many from out-of-town, it allowed them to sit with their significant others. “So we didn’t have that big long table to take up space,” she reasoned. “I was nervous about how that would look versus the traditional head table, but it turned out really cute.” And while the reception space looked beautiful, the weather also co-operated for the outdoor wedding at a home on Idylwild Drive. “I couldn’t have asked for a better day,” Pham enthused. “I was very worried because the Thursday prior to the wedding, on the day of the rehearsal, it was pouring rain. “Not even pouring rain, more like torrential downpour,” she rephrased. “And [the forecast] was calling for rain on the day of our wedding.” While the couple did have a back-up plan to get married at a church if the weather didn’t co-operate, Pham had her heart set on the beautiful outdoor wedding. “We woke up that morning and it was sunny, and there was nice fluffy clouds in the sky,” she recalled. “I just prayed all morning that it would stay that way and it did. “It was nice and sunny with a breeze, and it was perfect.” With such a beautiful home to be married at, Pham didn’t do too much more than set up chairs and a little backdrop and instead focused the majority of her efforts on the reception. And her new husband let his bride take care of all the planning. “I think he knew it would be beautiful, but I don’t think he thought it would be quite what it was,” Pham remarked. “I think he was very impressed, but I also don’t think he realized how much work went into it.” She stressed there are so many things that have to be done prior to the big day. Even all the little details need to be considered— from the lighting of the candles on the tables to how the flowers are getting to the venue. Both were things Pham overlooked. “It was stressful but it was worth it,” she said. Pham suggested to key to stress- free wedding planning is to give yourself lots of time. “If you plan on DIY-ing things, don’t think you’re starting things too early,” she noted. “If you start making things a year before your wedding, don’t think you’re crazy. “That’s good. Make them, tuck them away, and don’t forget about them,” she offered. “You will be very happy if you do things well in advance.” And while Pham tried to find things for as cheap as she could, she suggested not being afraid to splurge if there are certain things you want. “I’m only getting married once,” she reasoned, noting she bought a ribbon backdrop online that was expensive. “I knew I could probably make it, but I knew I wasn’t going to have the time and it wasn’t going to look like that one that I found, so I bit the bullet and I bought it and I’m happy I did,” she said. “It looked great in pictures and it was exactly what I wanted.” Pham’s final piece of advice is to not get carried away with do-it- yourself projects. “Pick a few key things that you want and stick to that because you can’t have it all,” she stressed. “People aren’t going to know what you didn’t do—that was the best advice I got. “If there is something you didn’t get around to doing that you wanted to do, nobody is going to know that you didn’t do it.” LINGERIE LINGERIE CATERING CATERING Wedding Catering Exceptional quality combined with an experienced chef at affordable prices.
