On behalf of the City of Brandon, it is my pleasure toextend a warm welcome toeveryone attending the ninthannual Lieutenant Gover-nor’s Winter Festival. It is arich and vibrant celebrationof Brandon’s cultural diver-

sity.On Feb. 2, 3 and 4, Bran-don will be transformed intoone of the biggest stages onthe Prairies, drawing per-formers and visitors from farand wide. Last year, there were more than 60,000pavilion visits, and the Win-ter Festival continues togrow!

The festival remainssquarely a “grassroots”

event, driven by the enthusi-astic support it receives fromBrandon’s multicultural com-munities. The Winter Festivalis the result of countlesshours of hard work and thecommitment of more than600 volunteers. I would liketo extend my thanks to those volunteers, city staff, individ-uals and groups that have worked so hard to bring us13 outstanding pavilions. A very special thank you to theEl Salvador pavilion, whichis this year’s host pavilion.

Festival celebratesour many cultures

Brandon’s most anticipated culturalevent, the Lieutenant Governor’s WinterFestival, is back for 2012 with somecolourful new pavilions and the returnof many old festival friends.

The ninth rendition of the festivalkicks off at city hall on Thursday, Feb. 2,

where, for the first time, the El Salvadorpavilion will provide the food and enter-tainment for the opening ceremonies,hosted by Manitoba Lt.-Gov. Philip S.Lee at 6 p.m.

“This is truly a premier event,” Win-ter Festival chair Esther Bryan said. “Ithink it’s one of those events that you

wait for, a whole weekend of entertain-ment and food. In the middle of winter,

we can do something fun.”

Thirteen pavilions will championBrandon’s growing cultural diversity in athree-day display of food, dance and cel-ebration.

As is usually the case from year toyear, there have been some changes tothe pavilion lineup. Some new pavilionsare joining the festival this season, oth-ers are on hiatus for a year or two, andan old favourite is back.» Continued on Page 5

For the first time, American culture will be rep-resented with the United States pavilion, featuringthe folk traditions of the Red River and Mississippicorridor. Representatives for the Isle of Mauritius,a group featured in the Global Village pavilion lastyear, have decided to go big in 2012 with their ownfull pavilion.

Though the Global Village, Ethiopian and Philip-pine pavilions will not be in operation this year, theBrazilian, Colombian, Salvadoran, English, FirstNations, French Canadian, Irish, Métis, Scottishand Ukrainian pavilions will all be in full swing.

And after a two-year hiatus, the always popularGerman pavilion is back in spectacular fashion,

with new digs at the Victoria Inn.Last year, the Winter Festival’s 13 pavilions drew

59,503 visits over its three-day duration. Admissionto all pavilions remains free, though it’s a good ideato bring cash so you can sample the many food andbeverage options each culture has to offer.

As this year’s Winter Festival host, El Salvadorcommittee members have been working for monthson some special performances to wow the audi-ence.

Manitoba Culture, Heritage andTourism Minister Flor Marcelino willalso be on hand at the opening cere-monies.

Ordinarily, the Winter Festival com-mittee would have commissioned a

snow carving for the host pavilion, andset up somewhere in a public location.But while Old Man Winter has decidedto show his face with colder tempera-tures, he didn’t bring along enoughsnow in time to allow festival organiz-

ers to build a snow pack.“There isn’t enough days left to be

able to do that,” Bryan said. “This is thefirst time ever in the nine years that

we’ve hosted this event, that there willbe no snow sculpture.

one pick-up combo will be offered.Entertainment will feature the Brandon Troyanda Schoolof Dance and a live Ukrainian band. Taking part in theband will be the Sawchuk sisters: two very youngviolinists and duet singers, who were featured main stageperformers at Canada’s National Ukrainian Festival inDauphin.

You will find a demonstration of Easter egg creations,including ostrich eggs, and also a display of Ukrainianarts and crafts.

The bar will carry two types of imported Ukrainian beerand imported vodka - a real treat!

word out and give them that same sortof recognition.”

The festival’s committee has also

made a few design upgrades to its web-site (brandonwinterfestival.ca), and in-cluded a smart phone-friendly version(m.brandonwinterfestival.ca).

Both sites include information abouteach pavilion, entertainment and gen-eral festival information.

Smart phone users can also checkthe centre spread of this guide for bar-

code links to specific pavilion sites andbus route information.

Those wanting to take in the 13 ven-ues — open this year from Thursday toSaturday — will have an opportunity touse free transit services, with two spe-cific routes that will take you near thedoor of each pavilion.

The buses run on a half-hour sched-ule.There’s also free Handi Transit over

the entire three-day festival. If someone would like to use that service, they need to call and schedule a time forpickup.

Since it began nine years ago, theLieutenant Governor’s Winter Festivalhas drawn hundreds of thousands of people through its varied and evolving

venues. And while it’s the cultural music and

food that keeps us coming back yearafter year, none of it could be done

without the many volunteers who spendtheir time making it happen.

“It’s massive. It’s absolutely mas-sive,” Winter Festival chair EstherBryan said. “That’s part of the reasonthe fest is so great, because we get

those volunteers.”The 2012 Lieutenant Governor’s

Winter Festival is set this year forFeb. 2-4 and features 13 culturalpavilions at locations spread through-out Brandon.

While each pavilion has a core groupof volunteers that have been hard at

work for months in preparation of the

three-day event, as many hands as pos-sible will be needed to ensure everyonegets the most out of their festival expe-rience.

“Each pavilion co-ordinates andschedules their own volunteers. They start months in advance, and it justbuilds as we get closer to the event it-self. It’s a big commitment from our cit-izens.”

Last year, for example, nearly 800 volunteers contributed at least 20hours to help make the festival suc-cessful.

All volunteers must either be overthe age of 18 or have parental consent.

Three new and returning pavilions jointhe lineup for this year’s 2012 LieutenantGovernor’s Winter Festival, and they’resure to please music, food and culturalenthusiasts alike.

At first glance festivalgoers may won-der why the United States has joined thefestival this year — it’s a lot like Canadaright?

Wrong, says USA pavilion organizerShandra MacNeill, who notes that a lot of the culture that we recognize as Ameri-can comes from significant folk tradi-tions.

This year, MacNeill says the festival will focus on the Red River and Missis-sippi corridor, which has a “rich variety of music and folk traditions and food.”

Volunteers at the pavilion will bedressed in period costumes from the late1700s to the early 1800s, with a focus

on the area between Memphis, Tenn. and

Louisiana.But the soul of the pavilion will be inthe barbecue sauces that will flavour thepavilion’s tender pork ribs.

“We’ve taken three barbecue saucesfrom three different regions — KansasCity, Memphis and South Carolina,” Mac-Neill said. “People will be able to tie intothe culture of our pavilion right from thesauce.”

The Magnificent 7s, a Winnipeg bandthat combines traditional bluegrass“with a sense of modern mayhem” ac-cording to the band’s website, will head-line the entertainment at the USApavilion.

Brandon’s Mauritian community hasstepped up its game this year after agreat showing at the Global Village pavil-ion in 2011.

“Last year was a real suc-cess,” pavilion organizerGino Jaune said. “We felt wecould do our own this year.That’s going to be really nice. We plan on bringingthe sun to Brandon withsome tropical music.”

Like the U.S. pavilion, the

Mauritians have decided toserve up some deliciousribs. But Mauritian cultureis a mix of Indian, Europeanand Asian influences, socount on a spicy edge whenyou take a bite.

For the opening night, theIsle of Mauritius pavilion

will focus on food and infor-mation. The pavilion’s enter-tainment, including music

and dancing, will begin onFriday night and continueinto Saturday.

Over the last two years,the city’s German commu-nity has been attempting tofind a venue large enough tohandle the many thousandsof visitors who want somegreat German food, lively music and authentic Ger-man beer.

This year, finally, the Ger-mans are back in a newhome at the Victoria Inn’sSalon A and B.

“We’re happy to be backand participate in the festi-

val,” German pavilion organ-izer Manfred Wicht said.“We will offer like in thepast — good food and beer,good schnapps and goodentertainment.”

With the new location,however, comes a smallproblem, and that’s park-ing. The German Pavilionshares a venue with a working hotel and theever-popular Scottishpavilion which is locatedin the Victoria Inn’s Impe-rial Ball Room.

To minimize confusion,

Wicht says German pavil-ion organizers have madea deal with the Sobeysfood store and Leon’s fur-niture store across thestreet.

“Visitors can parkacross the street. Parking will be somewhat re-stricted at the hotel and we don’t want to encroachon hotel guests. It’s very

important that patronscoming to our pavilion ei-ther take a shuttle bus orpark across the street.”

Aside from the parkingissue, the new venue givesorganizers exactly whatthey were looking for — alot more space.

“Now we will have seat-ing capacity of 450, whichis phenomenal. In 2009,about 5,600 people came

through the pavilion dur-ing the three days. I’mthinking this year, with125-130 more capacity, we’ll break all records inour pavilion.”

And don’t miss a chanceto see the Man versusMeter Wurst Competitionon Saturday afternoon.The organizers have chal-lenged members of the

public to eat a metre-long wurst sausage with all thesides, including red cab-bage and sauerkraut, inunder an hour. The fastesttime gets a prize of $100.

The entry fee needed tobe paid at least one weekprior to the competitiondate. The competition willstart at 2:15 p.m. on Feb.4 at the German pavilion.

Welcome to the First Nations Pavilion!

Come and learn about the 5 tribes that are here inManitoba, learn the history, culture, traditions, foods,

life styles of each tribe, there are 175,395 Aboriginalpeople in Manitoba alone.

A special invitation is extended to City of Brandon andsurrounding area residents to visit our First NationsPavilion, mingle, and taste some traditional food.

Our entertainment will be comprised of a Pow-wowand traditional games and so forth. There will bedisplay boards on how each First Nations lived, whatsource of food (Buffalo, Elk, Deer, Birds, plants,berries, and fish) they depend on and the land itself.

There will be crafts and art on display and for sale.The displays are educational, celebrating currentaccomplishment as well as our future aspirations. If you always wanted to meet First Nations peoples andbecome more informed about our unique history,aspirations, culture and traditions, the First NationsPavilion will be more than pleased to assist you.

Each year the LieutenantGovernor’s Winter Festivalcommittee selects a group

within Brandon to be the re-cipients of non-perishablefood donations.

This year, organizers say the Brandon University Stu-

dents’ Union has been cho-sen, following a fire last fallthat burned part of the Bran-don University’s studentunion building and destroyedmost of the food the organi-zation had collected forneedy students.

“I think the fire definitely lent itself to drawing atten-tion to the food bank atBUSU,” Winter Festival finan-

cial officer Hope Robertssaid. “They could use someextra support this year withextended semesters, andmore students being aroundand needing access to thatfood bank over the last cou-ple of months.”

Collection bins for non-perishable food items will beplaced at all 13 pavilions.Donations will be collected

throughout the weekend. Also, don’t forget to fill outthe Winter Festival’s quiz.There are 13 questions onthe quiz — one for eachpavilion. Answers can befound by visiting the pavilion.

“It will either be in thedisplay or found by talking toa volunteer, that you’ll findthe answers there,” Robertssaid.

Leave your quiz forms in

one of the buckets at any pavilion for a chance to winone of many prizes.

“It’s also a chance to giveus some feedback. There’s anice little spot on the back

where people can let usknow if they think there’ssomething we should con-sider for future years, or if they just love the festival and

want to keep coming back.”

Welcome to the United States of America Pavilion!

The USA has produced a wealth of unique cultural and folktraditions. Along the Mississippi and Red River corridor runsa rich, vivid tradition dissimilar to anywhere else in NorthAmerica. This region has produced much of what today isidentified as American folk tradition, for example: bluegrass,blues, gospel, and country music; American foods like

BBQ, gumbo, and Southern cooking in general; and alsothings like step dancing and campfire tales.

We intend to take Winter Festival goers back to the originsof American culture in order to see how it has evolved, andbecause who can resist tender pork ribs and rich apple piewhile listening to foot stomping bluegrass! We’re offeringthree traditional bbq sauces for our slow cooked ribs. Comevote for your favorite! We have lined up some terrific highenergy musicians to entertain the crowds; will have samplesof traditional American cuisine and a display that featuressome early Americana and historical references.

The USA Pavilion will be fully licensed, featuring a variety

of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The USA Pavilionis a great place to celebrate and reconnect with friends whowish to explore American folk and roots traditions!
