Make a modelto show how trees and plants help to regulate water cycle

Material required: Card board, Cotton, Wool, Fevicol, Colours , Clay, artificial trees to show transpiration

etc. Hint: Show river flowing through a mountain, a water body, trees to show evaporation and transpiration,

use cotton to show glaciers and clouds, show a bright yellow coloured sun also to show evaporation

Make a model to showthe prevention of soil erosion in hilly regions through farming techniques and tree

plantations.

Hint: terrace farming

Use coloured sheets to make science holiday homework file. Make a nice cover or folder .Paste

pictures, relevant samples of tree leaves and plant species and write information.

SUBJECT- MATHEMATICS

Activity 1: The age of a tree (compulsory)

Use a tape measure, or piece of string, and measure the distance around the trunk

(or girth) about one metre from the ground. Every 2.5 cm of girth corresponds to

approximately one year‟s growth. So a tree with a girth of 100 cm will be about

40 years old (100 divided by 2.5).

Take a picture of the tree and paste its printout on a pastel sheet. Also mention the

age and name of the tree.

Materials Required: A-4 size pastel sheets, scissors, adhesive, phone camera, markers

Activity 2: A tree census (Roll no. 1 to 20)

Conduct a survey of the different types of trees in the area you have chosen to study

(eg school grounds, local park, street, etc). Record findings on a simple map with a key

and show the number of different types of tree on a bar chart. Write the name of trees

on the bar graph.

Materials Required: Graph sheet or A 4 size pastel sheet, ruler, pencil and sketch pens.

Activity 3: Leaf count (Roll no. 21 to 36)

To estimate the approximate number of leaves, count the number of leaves on one twig. Estimate the

number of twigs on a branch and the number of branches, and then multiply these numbers together to

get the (rough) total number of leaves.

For example: Number of leaves on one twig = 8

Number of twigs on a branch = 24

Number of branches on a tree = 14

Total number of leaves on the tree = 8 × 24 × 14

Take out a print out of the picture of tree you surveyed. Paste the picture on an A4 size

pastel sheet. Show your observation on the same sheet.

Materials Required: A 4 size pastel sheet, pencil, adhesive, camera, pens and pencil.
