Except For Arkansas, LSUDefense Stingy AgainstThe Run Under Pelini

LSU's defense under Bo Pelini has become stingywhen it comes to rushing yards. In 39 games asLSU's defensive coordinator, the Tigers have held26 of their 39 opponents to less than 100 netrushing yards. LSU is 23-3 in those games withthe losses coming to Tennessee in 2005 andAuburn and Florida in 2006. First Quarter DominanceContinues Into 2007

One big reason for LSU's success last year wasits ability to take control of the contest early. Lastyear, the Tigers outscored their opponents 136-27in the first quarter and 240-87 in the first half.LSU didn't allow a single point in the first quarterof a game last year until the sixth contest of theyear when Florida scored with 11 secondsremaining in the opening frame. In all, LSU heldnine of its 12 opponents without a point in thefirst quarter a year ago. This year, LSU hasoutscored its opponents 94-41 in the first quarterand 196-112 in the first half.

David Scores TD, ThenKicks PAT - A First ForLSU Since 1965

The last time an LSU player scored a touchdownand then kicked the ensuing PAT came back onNov. 20, 1965 when Doug Moreau (who nowhandles the color analyst duties for the Tigerbroadcast team) did it against Tulane. In the 62-0win over the Green Wave, Moreau scored on a 9-yard TD pass from Pat Screen with 30 secondsleft in the first quarter and then followed with oneof his six extra points that day. Now, 42 yearslater, PK Colt David did it again, scoring on a 15-yard run on the Tigers' fake field goal just beforehalftime in the win over South Carolina. The Bo Pelini "D"

Since taking over as defensive coordinator for theTigers in 2005, defensive coordinator Bo Pelinihas put a unit on the field that rarely allowsopponents to reach the 20-point mark. In 39games with Pelini as its defensive coordinator,LSU has held 28 opponents to fewer than 20points. In addition, 18 of LSU's 36 opponents

failed to score more than 10 points. Last year,LSU limited seven of its 13 opponents to 10 pointsor less, including holding Kentucky scoreless,Arizona to 3 points, Fresno State to 6 points, andAuburn to 7 points. Just Who Is BackupQB Andrew Hatch?

LSU backup QB Andrew Hatch joined the Tigersover the summer after spending a year on achurch mission in Chile. Hatch originallycommitted to BYU and current LSU OC GaryCrowton when Crowton was still the head coachin Provo. Hatch eventually signed with Harvardand spent the 2005 season with the Crimson, playing on the junior varsity squad. After a year atHarvard, Hatch took a planned leave of absencefrom the program, going to Chile as part of aMormon mission. Originally, Hatch was going on atwo-year mission, however, his trip was cut shortby a knee injury suffered while playing soccerwith some of the locals. Hatch remained in Chile, undiagnosed for two months, before returning tothe United States for surgery. Hatch finished theyear rehabbing in his hometown of Henderson,Nev., where he re-connected with Crowton, whohad stayed in touch with the Hatch family overthe years. Eventually Hatch was offered a chanceto walk on at LSU in the summer of 2007 with achance of earning not only a spot on the roster, but also a scholarship. Hatch has seen action inone game this year, playing against MiddleTennessee. He's completed 1-of-2 passes for nineyards and rushed four times for 27 yards.

Quotables““LSU has a good football team, especially defensively. They had seven sacks in the game, and a lot ofpressures. There were times when we didn’t haveanywhere to throw it, and then times when we did havesomewhere to throw and didn’t get it there. They havean outstanding team.”—Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban

“It took an officials’ review for Virginia Tech to scorethe first points of the season against LSU’s defense.Apparently, Virginia Tech freshman Tyrod Taylor did getthe nose of the football over the goal line in the thirdquarter. The LSU defense— no worse than No. 3nationally the last four seasons — had given up justthose seven points in the last 10 quarters going backto the Sugar Bowl.”—Dennis Dodd, CBSportsline.com

“Their whole defensive front is really outstanding, much like we have looked at different times here. Youlook at those guys and you say, ‘He’s going to be a pro,he’s going to be a pro, he’s going to be a pro.’ Thenthere’s a young one, and you say, ‘He’s going to be apro.’”—Tennessee Head Coach Phillip Fulmer

“Their defense starts up front with their strong, soliddefensive front. The linebackers are pretty fast andreally quick side-to-side. But the main thing is youcan’t get the play started because they cause a lot oftrouble up front.”— Demarco McNair, Middle Tennessee State RB

“They have all the schemes. They have the all-out blitz, they have man-to-man with the safety back there andthey have their zones. They play a little bit ofeverything and play very well. They have outstandingplayers and coaches.”—South Carolina Head Coach Steve Spurrier

“They gave us a lot of problems with their multitude ofblitzes.”—Mississippi State Head Coach Sylvester Croom

“I shouldn’t have thrown the ball out there. He(Jonathan Zenon) made a good play. The guys playedhard. When you throw an interception for seven pointswhen it’s a tie game, it’s going to get you beat.”—Erik Ainge, Tennessee QB

“I'd been warned prior to my first visit toBaton Rouge that the legendary Death Valleymystique was a myth. That assessment couldn'thave been more wrong. Tiger Stadium was asloud as any I've ever heard during the dramaticfourth quarter of Saturday's Georgia game, thefestivities surrounding it as advertised.

The streets were lined with purple and gold.Smoke emanated from the grills in the parkinglot. Shouts of "Go Tigers" and "Tiger Bait"echoed from the stadium deep into the heart ofcampus.

And that was just Friday night.”
