He decried the conventional measure by concluding the speech saying, "you shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold".
Bryan's address helped catapult him to the Democratic Party's presidential nomination. He had been a dark horse in the race before and though he initially took the stand because the people of Nebraska wished for it, over time his views evolved and he understood its importance in trade.
