LSMC Rounds News from Lee’s Summit Medical Center Dear LSMC Family, It is hard to believe 2014 is here! Where did the past year go? I think we should all feel proud knowing we spent a big part of our lives during the past year serving patients and their families with innovative, compassionate care. This time of year always spurs personal and professional reflection for me. I like to ask myself - “What did we accomplish? What impact did we make with our patients and their families? What type of culture are we growing at LSMC?” This reflection is part of our culture to continually improve so let’s take a minute to congratulate each other for our 2013 accomplishments. You’ll see a few of these listed on page 2 and you can probably think of more. Wow, we’ve accomplished a lot and there is still more we can do to be better. As we move into the new year, I’ve been thinking about our biggest priorities for 2014. This is what spurred me a few months ago to engage a number of you to take a look at our mission, vision and core values. We’ve asked each other “Is our mission understandable? Could each individual serving at LSMC state how he or she fulfills our core values? How do these words connect each employee to patient-centered care?” In the past couple of months we’ve made some revisions to our mission, vision and core values to hopefully help each one of us connect our work every day to every patient, every time. Our 2014 strategic goals have a lot to do with providing an even better patient experience and working hard at even higher quality of patient care. There’s more about this in this newsletter on pg. 6. I want to personally thank each one of you for your commitment to patients and being the best provider of care in the region. We’ve had a great year and I’m excited about working with you to achieve even more this year. LSMC Rounds News from Lee’s Summit Medical Center

Dear LSMC Family,

It is hard to believe 2014 is here!

What type of culture are we growing at LSMC?” This reflection is part of our culture to

continually improve so let’s take a minute to congratulate each other for our 2013 accomplishments.

How do these words connect each employee to patient-centered care?”

In the past couple of months we’ve made some revisions to our mission, vision and core values to hopefully help each one of us connect our work every day to every patient, every time.

Sincerely,

Jackie DeSouzaPresident and CEO

2013 Lee’s Summit Medical Center Year in Review

LSMC is the only hospital in the region with daVinci Si robot with FireFly

Lee’s Summit Medical Center surgeons are the first in the area to have access to single-incision robotic surgery technology with FireFly. The FireFly system enables surgeons performing robotic surgery to benefit from fluorescence imaging to enhance the surgeon’s view of a patient’s anatomy and further differentiates body fluids. Our hospital’s first two robotic surgeries were performed on December 12 by Maliaka Woods, MD, and Adam Kramer, DO. The first surgery case performed with FireFly technology was performed December 19 by Dr. Kramer.

Mission, Vision, and Values Drive High Performance

We have organizational goals for 2014 in each of our pillar areas – people, patient experience, quality growth, finance. It’s important for each of us to link our daily work with these pillar goals keeping in

mind our Mission, Vision and Values. Recently several teams of employees, physicians, and board members spent time helping Lee’s Summit Medical Center make revisions to our Mission, Vision and Values to help these be more actionable and more meaningful to employees. You will be hearing more about our hospital’s 2014 goals to enhance the patient experience. Providing quality care through an exceptional patient experience should be at the HEART of everything we do.

Notice the Values spell H E A R T. More reward and recognition programs will be developed with H E A R T in mind and the first H E A R T stories are being shared on the next page. All leaders want to hear H E A R T stories all year long. We will print these in the newsletter and post them other places as appropriate. Please see your supervisor if you have questions about how your daily work links to the patient experience.

Mission:Above all else, we are dedicated to the care and improvement of human life – every person, every time.

Vision: To be recognized as the BEST healthcare provider in the region.

From a co-worker:

I just wanted to let you know how impressed I was with your team in ED today. (The day recently when the roads got icy unexpectedly and the ER quickly was very busy – full of patients.) After you called about the 95 y.o. patient who you needed PT/OT to evaluate, I went down to see her and to see if there was anything I could do to help out. Everyone in the ER behaved exactly the way I would want if I was having an emergency. They worked together, worked quickly and were kind to the patients, families and each other. I know that people expect ED staff to handle crisis situations, but they all made me proud to work at LSMC. I know several staff from other areas came down to assist and the teamwork was amazing! Thank you for leading such a great group of professionals!

From a patient’s family (the patient and family member names have been omitted to protect privacy):

My mother in law was seen in the ER at Lee’s Summit on two separate occasions and both times we had the pleasure of having Camie as our nurse. Some people are given the skills and personality to do a job and do it well. Camie was certainly given that ability. She not only is a wonderful, caring nurse but she also goes above and beyond to be a caring person. I work in the medical field and it is wonderful to see someone like her taking care of patients. I just wanted to let you know because I know it is nice to hear positive comments in a negative world! She puts a positive light on what is not always a happy situation. Thank you for your time and please let her and the rest of the ER staff know “thumbs up to them all for their care”.

Thanks,

Family Member
