There’s something inviting about Terrapin Traders—maybe it’s the musky smell of incense when you step over the stone threshold, or it could be the psychedelic sounds of the Grateful Dead playing on the radio. But perhaps it’s just the whole package: there’s a little bit of everything and something for everyone. That’s what Elizabeth Leonard, Terrapin’s owner and curator (it’s almost something of a museum), wants it to be.
Leonard first opened the store in downtown Gardner on October 16, 1996, just over a year after the death of Grateful Dead member Jerry Garcia. For the first year, Leonard peddled her wares in a building across the street from the Gardner Ale House on Parker Street. The store came to be as Leonard had been selling her handmade jewelry and t-shirts as a vendor at a festival called “Slip Into Summer,” organized by Grateful Dead cover band, Slipknot. Her success as a vendor led her to the idea of opening a store. “I had never had a business course in my life,” said Leonard, who holds a degree in Philosophy. She set to taking some business classes at Mount Wachusett Community College. A native of Hubbardston, Leonard decided to pursue a location in Gardner.
She’s not sure why she chose Gardner, but Leonard remembers when she approached Gardner Square One—now Gardner Square Two—for assistance. Everyone was very supportive of her idea, Leonard said, but she admits there was one problem. “They didn’t know what kind of store I wanted,” she said. “I was afraid people would associate the Grateful Dead with drugs.” Leonard was thrilled to learn that the town and Square One were on board, and both were happy to offer their support.
The store opening brings back fond memories for Leonard—her daughter Renee, who has since passed away, helped her with the set up when she first went into business. She couldn’t have predicted that the building in which
she had rented space would be condemned a year after the store opened. When people in town got word, Leonard said she was approached by many customers, who were concerned for her business. “Please don’t move out of Gardner,” they said, according to Leonard. She still gets a kick out of what one of her younger regular customers once told her: “This place put’s the ‘GAR’ in Gardner.” Leonard decided to move the store to her current location at 302 Central Street and has been there for 17 years running. In fact, this is where she met
her husband, Deems, she said. He came in to buy a lava lamp, according to Leonard, and she noticed he didn’t have a ring. They celebrated their vows in 1998 in a Native American ceremony atop Mount Wachusett, she said. “It was wear your best tie dye,” she said with a laugh.
That the store was popular is no surprise. There is so much to see, and Leonard and her friendly staff are always down for a good conversation. Cara Keane and

Chris “Captain” Coombs are both employees at the store, and have honed their own skills in music and art. Coombs offers guitar lessons, and Keane crafts some of the bags on consignment at the store. Often enough, if they don’t have what you’re looking for, Leonard can help find it. “I’m a people pleaser,” she said. After years of working as a nuclear chemist by day, Leonard has been dedicating more time to the store. Much of her merchandise comes from local vendors; some from Gardner, and
much more from various locations in New England.
And I can assure you, it’s not about drugs, either. Some things you might see in the store are tarot card decks, incense a plenty, and the books of local author Joni Mayhan, including Bones in the Basement, written about the S.K. Pierce Victorian Mansion in Gardner. Shelves are stocked with Badger health and beauty products, and beeswax candles from a vendor in Troy, NY. There are stickers and
patches, jewelry and blown glass pieces. Much of the glass work is done by Terrapin Glassblowers in Jaffrey, NH. In addition, a room at the back of the store holds a wide and varied selection of herbs and teas for sale. A customer stopped in during my visit for her supply of catnip, which is said to have a calming effect on people if taken as a tea (unlike the effect it seems to have on cats).
If that weren’t enough, Terrapin Traders is host to various classes and trainings. Leonard said she hopes to have a drum circle started during the winter months, and in the meantime has scheduled several paranormal classes with Mayhan.
And finally, a collaboration with screen printers Mark and Celina Juskowiak of Masterpiece Graphix has led Leonard to the opening of a second location at 394 West Boylston Street in Worcester. “He (Mark) had a storefront and asked if I wanted to share it,” said
Leonard. Leonard plans to hold classes and workshops at the new location as well, she said. The first of these classes will be a Besom making class in time for Yule.
And then of course, there’s the music.
Terrapinfest, a small music festival featuring local musicians, was the brainchild of Leonard and store employees including local singer/songwriter Kelly Girouard (Kellianna). “It really just evolved
Chris “Captain” Coombs has worked at Terrapin Traders since the year 2000. “It’s a cool place that attracts a diverse crowd of people,” he said. “I’ve made a lot of connections work-ing at (the) store.” Currently, Coombs works at the store on Tuesdays—store owner Elizabeth Leonard has also been gracious enough to offer the space for guitar lessons there on the side. In fact, he said he does have openings for Tuesday afternoons. Coombs is an experienced teacher with more than 19 years’ experience. In addition to giving lessons at the store, he offers lessons on Monday and Friday at City Music’s Gardner location, and on Wednesdays at the music store’s Leominster location.
Coombs plays guitar and sings in a number of projects himself, which include the band The Sufferin’ Bastards. The band is comprised of vocalist Johnny Nobriga, Ronnie Cormier on bass and vocals, guitarist and vocalist, Nick Langlois, and fea-tures Coombs on guitar and vocals. Other projects of Coomb’s include Brian and Captain, featuring Brian Vautour, Total Domination with Dean DiMarzio, and The City Boys, in which Coombs performs as a duo with local singer and guitarist John Nicker-son. The City Boys also sometimes appears as a full band, according to Coombs. Given all this, it’s safe to say that Coombs is a staple of the local music scene. Coombs was there for the inception of the local music event, Terrapinfest, alongside Terrapin Trad-ers owner Elizabeth Leonard and her husband Deems, and then employee Kelly Girouard (Kellianna). He has helped Leonard and other employees organize and work the event over the past 14 years.

out of one conversation,” said Leonard. For the first several years, the festival was held at the Hubbardston Rod and Gun Club. A shift in location to the Polish American Citizens Club has led to the festival taking on musicians on dual stages.
“It’s always been fun,” said Leonard, though she admits that planning can be a little bit stressful with worries about bad weather and other unforeseen problems. In the end, though, it usually turns out well, she said. This year’s performers included bands such as Jake McKelvie and the Countertops, Cara Keane and the Disclaimers, and Clark + Becker. Acoustic acts included John Nickerson and Nikki and Whibble, featuring singer-songwriter Nikki Howard. “Her voice is just so incredible,” Leonard said of Howard. Befitting, too that Grateful Dead cover band, A Fine Connection, took the stage this year as well. The turnout has been better each
year, according to Leonard, though she expects to “keep it small.” The PACC can’t handle more than 1,000 people, and Leonard plans to stay within that capacity. That and it is a local music celebration, after all.
“I want (people) to realize all of the talented people they have around here,” said Leonard. Leonard is impressed every year by all of the musicians—she listens to
each and every band, both before they are booked, and during their performance. You’ll often see her grooving along to the bands that take the stage, both indoors and out.
Leonard estimates that she has seen the Grateful Dead play on well over 500 occasions. “It was easy to do 30 shows in one fall,” said Leonard, who reminisced about the time she saw Jerry Garcia sing Werewolves of
London—in London. “You were never disappointed,”
If you ask Leonard what makes her want to keep Terrapin Traders going, she’ll tell you. “I just love Jerry.”

Cara Keane has worked at Ter-rapin Traders for three and a half years, and has performed at Terrapinfest for the past three years.
What she likes about being in-volved in Terrapinfest, both as a musician and as a volunteer is that “it brings like-minded peo-ple together to celebrate music.”
“It’s not just the fans, but that the other musicians are there to support each other,” said Keane. For the first two years, Keane performed at the festival as a duo with her bass playing hus-band, Mark Keane, and the proj-ect featured much of her origi-
nal music. She followed this up in the third year by introducing her new project, Cara Keane and the Disclaimers. The proj-ect formed almost specifically for Terrapinfest, and was also based on Keane’s originals.
“Many musicians have worked to make the Disclaimers hap-pen,” said Keane. Though mem-bers have changed over the course of the project, Keane and the current lineup are in the studio working on a debut album comprised of originals she has written, some new and some old. Keane will perform some covers and original, possibly with a few special guests at Williams Pub on Friday, January 9, starting at 7:30 p.m.

I recently had a chance to talk to Fitchburg’s own OUTBOUND. The five-piece band consists of mem-bers Rob Barrett on drums, Scott Normandin on guitar, Chris Car-bone on Guitar, Ben Nickerson on bass and Dylan McPhee on vocals. The band’s sound is, “In a
nutshell, …a cluster of everyone’s musical influences both prominent and minor. Our jams are basically a mix between hard-hitting guitar, prominent and distinguished vocal melodies, with an experimental yet super solid rhythm section, con-sidering the genre. We all came together for an essentially new twist on the popular pop punk/indie genre of today.”
The band has recently released a diverse 6-track ep called “Suite 10”, recorded at Bridge East studios in east Bridgewater. The ep opens with “Barter with the Gypsy”, a dark yet poppy introduction for the sun-dry album. Another notable track includes “Blindspot”, an epic song that spans multiple tempos, vibes,
and moods. Quite a rollercoaster really. When asked about the re-coding process Outbound states, “that the process of recording Suite 10 was just as, if not more reward-ing than actually writing the songs themselves.”
Shows coming up include a show in Queens NY, on November 8th, and Club Oasis in Worcester Ma the following day November 9th. Then planned time off to write their debut full-length album TBA 2015.
The band’s sound is certainly hard
to pin down. It may fit into the cat-egories pop punk/ indie, but just barely so. “We’re just trying to be personally stumped when some-one asks us, “Hey, what band do you sound like?” We strive to cre-ate something that can’t be an-swered. We’re just trying to create, Outbound... Nothing more.” You’ll have to have a listen to Outbound for yourself to really understand.

When I was asked by LSM to take in the nightlife at Classics Pub on Central St. in Leominster, I was pretty excited! Classics Pub just happens to be one of my favorite places. I grabbed myself a late dinner from Espresso’s Pizza across the
street. The relaxed atmosphere of Classics allows patrons to bring in local food while enjoying the eve-ning’s entertainment. As always, no cover charge! I was greeted by the friendly faces of Jamie, Kayla and Mike working the bar that night.
I found myself a table and browsed the specialty drink menu as my friends in mArked began their evening of musical enter-tainment. I chose an Almond Joy martini to go along with my mushroom pizza. It was a deli-cious start for sure! My friend Laurel met up with me to join in the experience. We ordered up her first drink and the night was
under way! The band had a great mix of heavier rock music. Being a singer in a band, I couldn’t resist the urge to jump on the mic after being given the “thumbs up” when I heard the riff of one of my favorite songs to sing! They were gracious enough to let me also sing a song in their third set.
As I typically do to most events, I brought my camera. I generally don’t end up in my own pictures because it takes far too long to explain how to use it! I enjoyed
snapping some shots of friends and patrons as they enjoyed the band, drinks and my pizza!Last call came and Laurel and I made our way over to Comeketo Brazilian Restaurant just a few doors down. We never can resist some late night wings, yucca and impromptu Brazilian dancing! We used up every last cent of our $100 and even a bit of our own. It was definitely worth the night out and it was one for the record books! ~ Cherie Haley

1. Tell us who, what, when and where. Who are your band mates? What kind of music do you play? When did you get together?
Band members: Becky St.Jean lead vocals, John St.Jean drums, Greg Cossi bass and Jim Haley lead guitar. We play rock covers, Dio, Journey, Doobie Brothers, Halestorm, Godsmack, and everything in between. Even some newer radio hits and a couple country jams we rock up once and a while. We play generally in the Leominster/Fitchburg area, but have been to Worcester and other places a few times. We’ve been playing together almost three years.
2. Your dad is your drummer, Is Playin’ Dirty your first musical venture together?
Dad is in Fivehole too. I used to sing with them in high school when they would play a private function or party that wasn’t at a bar. When I turned 18, I started messing around with the idea of getting my own band going and the rest is history. My dad and I always sang together though, in the car on the way to basketball practice/tournaments etc. Even when I was really young, I always remember music playing, singing and rocking out in the living room.
3. Working and giggin with family is hard. What do you and your dad do to keep it positive?
It’s just fun for us, a nice way to let off some steam, get creative and it’s awesome to have an outlet that I can share with my family. Mom is at every show too. ☺ She actually sang in a band with my dad and our bassist, Greg when they were all in high school together.
4. Tell us about the first time you ever performed in front of an audience.
I honestly can’t even remember, but we have video of 3 year old me singing Alanis’ “Ironic” at a family graduation party. I did classical voice recitals in elementary school too. My first band performance with Dad was with Fivehole when I was 15. I was so nervous, shaking, and my voice cracked so bad during the final note of “Heartbreaker”.

5. What is the song you want to sing with Playin’ Dirty that the rest of the band keeps saying no to?
I don’t know about a specific song, but I’m always trying to slip some more rock/country songs. I’m slowly making gains.
6. Who is the one person, alive or dead; you would most like to sing a duet with?
Tough question, again, my taste is so strange. My rock side says Ronnie James Dio or Lizzy Hale. Lizzy is my god!
7. What are the 5 things you can’t live without?
I couldn’t go without my family, music, down time at home, good food, and laughing so hard it hurts.
8. How are you spending Thanksgiving?

There’s a lot of history in these old Yan-kee mill towns and not a few surprises. You see the fine brickwork, the granite dams and bridges, the old factories. But in Clinton, near the banks of the Nashua River, you’ll find this Museum of Russian Icons. Who has a Museum of Russian Icons? Boston? You can’t say that!
Textile mills along the Merrimac trib-utaries gave way to newer industries at mid-century and an entrepreneur, Gordon B. Lankton, went into the plas-tic business, calling his factory Nypro. Everyone in Clinton knows about it. Everyone knows Mister Lankton.
I met him quite by accident on the front steps of the museum, a courtly gent in a well-cut suit, like he walked right off of State Street. I had already heard the rumor: Gordon Lankton was an ear-ly-day Artie T., a visionary industrialist who valued and honored his employees.
Inside, staff members Jocelyn, Amy and Kent are genuinely friendly. They are helpful, informative, and welcome me to the museum. The space - an-nexed from the Court and rehabilitated in 2009 - shows sweeping contempo-rary lines. Staircases leading up (or down) one storey are wide, curved, cut into the center of the open floor. Then the icons! You hear the word a little too often these days. Everyone seems to be “iconic.” Like a cheap plastic trophy, the term is awarded too easily. But there’s nothing cheap on these walls. The dates (printed on neat, unobtrusive display tablets) go back 300, 500 even a thousand years. The icons are Christian images: Mary, Jesus, figures from the Bible. Here’s John the Baptist, a six foot wooden panel, painstakingly painted with small and precise images. It shows “The Baptism of Sinners.” This comes from
Yaroslavl, a hundred miles east of Moscow and is dated 1675. Another painted at Novgorod, up towards the Arctic Circle, is a complex calendar; a specific Christian saint is illustrated perfectly - each one only an inch high - for every day on the calendar. The year: 1680.
Breezing ahead 300 years takes us to a special photographic exhibit of Soviet (and pre-Soviet) Siberia. At the entrance, a Siberian tiger glares from a glass case. Russia lies at the far east of Europe. But further, crossing the Ural Mountains to Siberia, you are in the land of Tartars. Asian reindeer breeders make camp there, and while the Trans-Siberian railroad crosses that vast arboreal belt and there are tractors and gasoline and rifles in use, Siberian Russians live essentially in the ancient past. Their faces peer back through the lens at you, etched with work and suffering. The setting looks so cold and bleak. Then, jux-taposed, is a surprise photograph - a January crossroads in North Dakota. It’s the same season, the same lati-tude, the same earth.
There’s a tea room in the basement. Amy explains that it’s help-yourself-on-the-honor-system, so I sit with my cup and stare at a row of antique sam-ovars. Light from a western window shines on the ornate, polished silver and brass, conjuring an image of Rus-sia in the high time of the Czars.
I’ve digested enough. From gritty pho-tos of Asian miners, to Byzantine iron crosses a thousand years old, the Mu-seum of Russian Icons takes you on a wild trip of imagination. Then there’s Africa. Mister Lankton travelled widely in the plastic trade and so began early in building his stunning
trove of art. A young American on a motorcycle, he must have cut a dash-ing figure in the mad cities and dusty towns of Angola, Senegal, Cameroon
and Cote D’Ivoire. On High Street, only two blocks from the Russian Icons, is Lankton’s Gallery of African Art. Put a quarter in the meter out front and you’re in the door. (You’ve gotta’ love Worces-ter County for that - everywhere you go!)
Iron, bronze and ebony masks stare in silence. Drums made from hol-lowed logs, rawhide
strips and animal skin (still got the fur!) are arranged in a circle. Silent for now but museum curator, the engaging Di-anne Mather, tells me they do not go unused. Workshops and community classes bring Lankton’s African collec-tion to life with drumming events and seminars in African culture. The room is quiet and well lighted. Audio/video machines offer stories and lore; maps show the nations, list tribal names and illustrate where each piece of art comes from.
While these beautifully crafted statues and masks stare out from glass cas-es in eternal silence, you can feel the spirit of their unknown sculptors. An iron boat, a full meter long, carries for-ty tiny musicians. Vibrant, expressive, the figures play woodwinds, trumpets, drums; they are singing. Each face is an individual, the whole, welded together with such feeling. You hear their song.
Come to Clinton, then. Don’t miss it. A world away, it is right here for us.
