Introductions

The LSAT is a scary test, but you’ve taken the first steps towards mastering the exam! This workbook is your guide through the course and all the related materials. It’s worth spending 15 minutes looking through this before your first session. Let’s start by talking about the structure of this course.

Flipping the Script

Instead of following the standard format for test-prep classes where you learn the basics in class and then go home to (hopefully) practice your skills, our courses flip that script. We realized that our instructors could offer you so much more if you came to class knowing the basics already, so we modeled our class after university courses where you do the bulk of the reading before you come to class, then build on that foundation in class before honing your skills at home.

The first stage of your learning will be driven by our interactive self-study video lessons—LSAT Interact—and our Strategy Guides. Each session will have assigned prep work to be completed before class. Your instructor will then reinforce what you learned and build on that knowledge to address the more advanced concepts in the test.

This accomplishes three important things. First, it allows you to move at your own pace as you build the foundation of your LSAT approach. Second, it ensures that every major concept on the test is addressed in multiple learning sessions: first at home, then in class, then at home again. Finally, it maximizes the value of class time by allowing us to explore the trickiest questions and concepts on the test, where the highest scores are earned!

Maximizing Your Learning

You’re committing some time and money to getting the best LSAT score, so let’s not waste either. Here are some principles to follow:

1. Do your best to come to class prepared. You’ll see in the syllabus that we label the preparation homework—do that stuff first so that you are able to participate in class. While your instructor will do their best to help you if you haven’t learned the basics, the class is geared towards those who already did the homework.

2. Talk to your instructor. Most everyone falls behind at some point—don’t sweat it. Tell your instructor and they’ll help you create a plan for catching up. If you sign up for Coaching Sessions (and we recommend you do), you’ll meet with your instructor twice during the course to address your individual needs. (More about those Coaching Sessions on page 5.) Finally, be sure to talk with your instructor if you’re not sure how to do your homework effectively. Using your time ouside of class effectively is a critical piece of the LSAT prep puzzle, and a large part of our job is to make sure you’re squeezing the most out of every minute of it.

Page 5: LSAT - s3.amazonaws.com Table of Contents Welcome to your LSAT prep course. You’ll use this Course Workbook to find and complete assignments and plan your study sessions.

5

3. Commit. Set a schedule of when you’ll do your homework, aiming for more frequent, shorter study sessions. (The 8-hour marathon on Sunday just doesn’t lead to real learning.) We’ve designed the course so that you can get quite a bit out of it with 10 hours of work between each session. Ideally, you can spend 15 or more, but 10 should be A-OK.

MaterialsCheck that you have received all of your materials. You should have received:

This Workbook!

3 Strategy Guides• Logic Games• Logical Reasoning• Reading Comprehension

2 Practice books• 10 New Actual, Official LSAT PrepTests with Comparative Reading (PrepTests

52-61) (aka OG1)• 10 Actual, Official LSAT PrepTests, Volume V (PrepTests 62-71) (aka OG2)

Bring this workbook and the first practice book (52-61, aka OG1, aka “the green one”) to each class.

Coaching SessionsWhat are they?Coaching Sessions are 1-hour private sessions with your instructor. While the format varies depending on student needs, usually they cover:

• Establishing an effective study plan during and after the course• Interpreting data from recent practice tests• Clearing up lingering content issues

How can I purchase them? The Coaching Sessions must be purchased separately (we did this so that we could keep the cost of the course affordable to more folks). If you did not purchase the sessions when enrolling and would like to do so now, contact Student Services ([email protected] or 646-254-6480).

When do they happen? It’s at the instructor’s discretion when they occur (and it depends on your schedule, too), but usually the first one happens around Session 4 and the second one happens towards the end of the course. You can do your second session up to 3 weeks after the end of the course.

Page 6: LSAT - s3.amazonaws.com Table of Contents Welcome to your LSAT prep course. You’ll use this Course Workbook to find and complete assignments and plan your study sessions.

6

Where do we meet? Most Coaching Sessions happen in one of our live-online classrooms (Blackboard Collaborate™). Your instructor will give you instructions on how to set up and enter the room. The online classroom features live audio (and video, bandwidth permitting) and a shared digital chalkboard.

If you have any questions about Coaching Sessions, ask your instructor or contact us at 646-254-6480 or [email protected]

Finding Explanations for Your Homework and PrepTestsWe’ve written explanations for (and discussed) most every LSAT problem ever. You can find them all online. There are a few ways to get there:

1. Go to the LSAT Explanations section of your Student Center. From there, you can search for any question by PrepTest number and follow the link to the relevant page in our LSAT forums.

2. Go directly to our forums: w ww.manhattanprep.com/lsat/forums and either enter the first few words of the question in the search bar, or search by PrepTest number.

3. Score your test using LSAT Navigator. Each question has a direct link to the forum post discussing it.

Explanations already exist for most questions, but if you come across a question that hasn’t been explained, ask us about it. The more detail you give us about what’s confusing you, the more you’ll get out of the explanation. Also, if you have a follow-up question to something, go right ahead and post your question on the forum!

Finally, if you’d like to take your prep to the next level, try your hand at answering questions on the forums yourself. We look over student-written explanations and correct or give feedback as needed.

Online ResourcesLet’s take a brief tour of the resources in your online Student Center:

LSAT Interact ( Course Resources→On-Demand Lessons→LSAT Interact) This is a set of interactive video lessons that we will assign as homework.

Labs ( Course Resources→On-Demand Lessons→Labs) These are additional online lessons designed to cement what you’ve learned in the homework and in class.

Online Proctor ( Course Resources→Practice Test Resources→Online Proctor) Use this tool to provide more realistic testing conditions during your practice tests.

LSAT Navigator ( Course Resources→Practice Test Resources→LSAT Navigator) Enter the answers from your practice tests. The Navigator will score your test and make suggestions on what to focus on going forward (this becomes useful as you near the end of the course and afterwards).

LSAT Arcade ( Course Resources→Online Resources→LSAT Arcade) This area features mini-games that target particular skills you’ll need to deploy on the LSAT. These are assigned throughout the syllabus, but feel free to stop by and play any time you have a few minutes.

Practice Drills ( Course Resources→Online Resources→Additional Drill & Solutions)Many of the drills in our Strategy Guides have additional problem sets online. Hit these if you’ve already done the relevant reading and drills in the book and are looking for more practice.

PrepTests We’ve given you more than enough PrepTests to use, but if you run out, or want to use the latest PrepTest at the end of the course, go to the PrepTests tab in your Student Center.

Logic Challenges ( Course Resources→Online Resources→Logic Challenges) These are tough games that our teachers have written. Some of the challenge games come in “Easy” and “Hard” versions.

Okay, that about covers the resources! If you have any trouble, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at l [email protected], t [email protected], or 646-254-6480. Next up, the outline for your course!

Homework Quiz: Session 1→2

1. What is an argument’s Core? 2. Using the notation from Conditional Logic: Part 1, diagram the following statement and its contrapositive: If pandas learn to read, then the human race is doomed.

3. What is a conclusion called that is not the argument’s main point, and how can you distinguish between it and the main conclusion?

4. On ID the Conclusion questions, what traps are you likely to encounter?

5. When an LR answer choice refers to a claim the argument made, what trap should you look out for?

6. What should you do when facing an Orientation question?

7. What should you do when facing a Conditional question?

8. How do you know when to frame? 9. You just finished a practice set, but you’re unsure of some of your answers. What should you do next?

10. Turn to pg. 152 of OG1 (the green book). Set up the game and work through The Big Pause, then answer the following (don’t work through the questions): Are there any variables with no rules? What elements or rules do you think will drive the game? Do you see any opportunities for framing? If so, where?

14

How to Review Your WorkOnce you’ve completed a set of problems, you should simply check your answers and figure out why the correct answer is correct, right? Wrong! This common approach to reviewing work is not the way to drive your score upward. Let’s look at a more effective method.

There are some basic principles to keep in mind:

1. Simply reading an explanation does not translate into learning something. You have to apply it. Whenever the beginning of an explanation helps ideas start to click, stop

reading! It’s time to shift back to the question, apply what you now see about the question, and see if you can figure out the rest on your own. Then go back to the explanation when you get stuck again or to further refine whatever dollop of brilliance you just developed on your own.

2. Replaying questions, games, and passages is one of the most effective ways to deepen your understanding. This is another way to ensure you’re applying what you’ve learned. Ideally, keep

a Strategy Log (pp. 82–83 in this booklet has a sample Strategy Log), where you note questions you got wrong, struggled with or simply took too long on, noting your errors and what you’d like to do differently next time. Or, if that’s too much, just keep a simple list of those questions. Either way, try those questions again 2-10 days later—and sometimes a week or two later once again. (You usually want to replay logic games sooner than you’d re-do other question types, especially logical reasoning.)

3. Try again on tough questions before checking your answer. There’s no avoiding the fact that when you solve an LSAT question under timed

conditions, you will often have to move faster than you want. However, testing conditions are not the ideal conditions for learning from a question. Since immediately checking an answer key seems to let us off the hook for thinking about a question (“Oh, I got it right, I don’t have to review it because I am apparently perfect!”), you will get more out of your review if you start by re-working any questions that you struggled with. This requires that you mark the questions as you go. However, if your second attempt bears no fruit, then go and check the answer key so that you can spend some time figuring out why the right answer is right and the wrong ones are wrong.

On the next page are some more details on how the review process looks in practice.

Page 15: LSAT - s3.amazonaws.com Table of Contents Welcome to your LSAT prep course. You’ll use this Course Workbook to find and complete assignments and plan your study sessions.

15

The Review Process

1. Complete your set of questions or practice test under timed conditions, marking questions you’re unsure about or spend too much time on while working through the set.

2. Before you check the answers , take a second look at all of the problems that you marked in Step 1. Decide to either stick with your current answer, or switch to another answer. If you do the latter, you should still track your initial answer.

3. Now, check the answer key. As you do this, mark which problems you answered incorrectly—but don’t indicate the correct answer for that question.

4. Go back to any question you answered incorrectly and try to find the correct answer.

5. Check to see what the correct answer is for any questions that you just completed a second pass on. Try to explain each of these questions, even if you answered correctly the second time. Focus on why the right answer is right and why the tempting wrong answers are wrong.

6. For any question that you marked or answered incorrectly during any of the above steps, read our explanation on the forums. The goal is to reinforce your thought process for the ones you got right, and correct it for the ones you got wrong. Remember, as you read our explanations, whenever you finish reading a part that explains something you didn’t understand already about the question (or passage or game) stop reading and go back and try applying that to the question. The goal is not to passively receive the explanation but to use it to train your brain.

7. Fill out your Strategy Log for each question you spent too much time on, weren’t 90+% certain of, or answered incorrectly. (Or, if you’re not keeping a Strategy Log, simply keep a list of these questions.)

8. Redo the questions in your Strategy Log (or on your re-do list) about a week later. At that point you’ve started to forget the question specifics, and the act of retrieving the correct approach will strengthen your hold on it.

Let’s look at an example to see how this might work:

Suppose you complete a set of 10 Logical Reasoning questions, giving yourself 1:20 per question. You found questions 5 and 6 particularly difficult, so you put a star next to each of them.

After completing the timed set, you go back and take another minute on each to decide to either keep your answer, or change to another one. Then, you grab the answer key and check your answers. You see that you’ve answered questions 5, 6, and 8 incorrectly. You put marks next to those three questions without recording the correct answers.

Page 16: LSAT - s3.amazonaws.com Table of Contents Welcome to your LSAT prep course. You’ll use this Course Workbook to find and complete assignments and plan your study sessions.

16

You head back to 5, 6, and 8 to see if you can figure them out. Give yourself about the same amount of time as you would normally for a question (1:20). Once that is done, you check the answer key and see that you answered 5 and 8 correctly, but you still picked the wrong answer for 6.

After taking another look at 6 with the correct answer in hand and coming up with an explanation for why it’s correct (or struggling with it awhile and deciding that you need some help), you log into the forums and check the explanations for 5, 6, and 8.

Next up, some specific questions to ask yourself for reviewing each section type, followed by some recommendations on how to review questions if you don’t have much time.

17

Considerations for Review

Logical Reasoning

Question Stem & Stimulus:1. Did I begin by identifying the question type and my specific task correctly?

2. Was my understanding of the stimulus complete and correct? For example, if this was an Assumption Family question, did I identify the argument core accurately?

3. What are the important ideas or keywords in the stimulus? Did I miss any during my initial read?

4. Before I moved on to the answer choices, did I pause to consider what the correct answer choice might look like?

Answer Choices:1. On my first pass through the answer choices, did I focus on quickly eliminating

incorrect answers? Did I make the decision to defer quickly?

2. If I was left with two or three appealing answer choices, how did I choose between them?

3. What parts of wrong answers tempted me?

4. What are the important ideas or keywords in the incorrect answers? In the correct answer?

Timing and Process:1. Did I allocate my time properly?

2. How does this question relate to other material I’ve studied? Can I identify another question with similar issues at play?

Page 18: LSAT - s3.amazonaws.com Table of Contents Welcome to your LSAT prep course. You’ll use this Course Workbook to find and complete assignments and plan your study sessions.

18

Logic Games

Reviewing any logic game involves analyzing your process, coming up with strategies that will help you do the right thing next time, and making sure you can carry out an efficient process in the future. As such, it’s very much about figuring out the correct approach and then replaying the game.

After finishing a game, check your work to see where you went wrong, and find the correct answer to any question you initially answered incorrectly (or, at least, spend some time trying). After that, read through the official explanation, writing out each step as it’s described. After getting our explanation in your own handwriting, check over the game one more time to internalize the process. Then, wait a day or two and redo the game, trying to replicate this “perfect form!”

The Setup:1. Was I able to correctly identify the game type and create an appropriate

diagram? Were there any twists to the game setup that my diagram didn’t incorporate?

2. Did I diagram each rule correctly and efficiently?

3. How could I have made any missed inferences up front? Which rules combined to lead to the inference?

4. Did I make the right decision on frames?

The Questions:1. Did I follow the correct process for each question?

2. Did I miss any inferences?

3. If I created a hypothetical, did I note too little (or too much) on my paper?

4. Were there any cases where I could have used my work from previous questions to eliminate answer choices?

Timing and Process:1. Which steps and questions did I spend too much time on? How could I have

finished those steps more quickly?

2. How does this game relate to others I’ve encountered? Can I find a game in my Strategy Log with similar issues at play?

Page 19: LSAT - s3.amazonaws.com Table of Contents Welcome to your LSAT prep course. You’ll use this Course Workbook to find and complete assignments and plan your study sessions.

19

Reading Comprehension

When reviewing a Reading Comprehension passage, start with your Scale, Passage Map, and the Main Point question. You should be able to reconstruct the passage by considering these three elements. This is a check on your overall comprehension, as well as your ability to correctly distill the role of each paragraph and the author’s viewpoint.

For the questions, you should find the lines that justify the correct answer and any lines that contradict the incorrect ones.

The Passage:1. Was there any key aspect of the passage that I missed or misinterpreted? Do

my Scale and Passage Map correctly reflect the passage (as checked by the Main Point, Primary Purpose, and Passage Organization question(s))?

2. Did I clearly mark up the areas of the passage that identified and explained a viewpoint?

The Questions:1. Did I interpret each question accurately and, where possible, anticipate an

answer?

2. If the question called for going back to the passage, did I go to the right sections of the passage? Did my Passage Map/notations point me there?

3. On my first pass through the answer choices, did I focus on eliminating incorrect answers?

4. What was appealing in the tempting wrong answers? What made the correct answer look incorrect? How should you I adjust how I evaluate answer choices for this question type?

5. Which lines from the text support the correct answer? Which lines did I think supported the wrong answer, and why is that not the case?

Timing and Process:1. How does this passage relate to others I’ve encountered?

2. What language in the passage was important in creating the passage structure or highlighting the different viewpoints?

Minimum Review Process

What you’ve read so far is our Standard review process, and we recommend you go through it for as many questions as possible. After a while, it shouldn’t take too long to review any question effectively.

However, we know that everyone is busy, and it’s hard enough to get in all the practice, let alone the review. Let’s look at a pared-down version of the process:

First, we’d recommend that you prioritize review as much as getting through more questions. We’d rather you do 75% of the homework with full review than 100% of the homework without review. Focusing on “just doing more questions” is a common trap students fall into, and it’s not the way to maximize your score. One thoroughly reviewed PrepTest will teach you more than five that you take without review.

If you’re short on time, one way to modify this process is to be selective and review fewer questions. Instead of reviewing all questions, you can focus on the areas where you need to improve the most. For example, if your weakest section is Logic Games, prioritize reviewing the games you struggled with.

It’s also possible for this review process to save you time, overall. If you are working through a set of homework questions and are finding them difficult, stop to review the questions you’ve completed rather than trudging through the whole set. A little time spent reviewing to improve your understanding might help you complete the rest of the questions more quickly, easily, and, most importantly, accurately. Each question you answer correctly and confidently is one fewer question to review.

These LR practice sets are composed of the first few questions of a single LR section. Generally, these questions are relatively straightforward and can be answered accurately and efficiently with the skills you have already learned. You may encounter a question type you haven’t seen before, but fear not—trust your logical instincts!

In order to achieve a top score, test-takers need to know when they can push the pace on easier problems to create time to invest on harder problems later on. That’s why these sets are designed to be completed in 1 minute per question or less.

Timed Mini Set

These LR practice sets are designed to mimic the difficulty breakdown of a standard LR section. That means there will be a straightforward question or two, one or two really tough ones, and a few that are in-between. Your job is to make strategic decisions about how to invest your time. If a problem seems really hard, don’t be afraid to skip it and come back to it when you know exactly how much time you can invest. The time limits on these sets allott 1 minute 20 seconds per question, but, just like on the actual test, easier questions should be completed in less time, giving you extra time to spend on the harder questions. (Remember to move on quickly from the ones that seem extremely difficult—every question is worth just one point!)

Homework 10→LSAT(After Session 10, before the exam)

From Now Until Test Day

All Topics

Between now and test day, everyone should complete (and review!) at least one of the five most recent LSATs each week. These can be found in your student center. When scheduling your tests, be sure to stop taking PrepTests at least a few days before your actual LSAT. Give yourself a chance to rest!

Additionally, aim to do a weekly PrepTest from LSAT OG2, broken up into individual sections. When possible, try to do two sections in a row to work on your stamina.

There are also additional Practice Sets on pp. 62–64 of this workbook. Use the Session 10 sets for additional practice, and the Supplemental Sets to target weak areas.

Use these sections and PrepTests to diagnose areas of strength and weakness. When you diagnose areas of weakness, review your ideal process using your Cheat Sheets and read any unread chapters associated with this game, passage, or question type. Complete practice sets that focus on that question type, from the supplemental sets listed below, homework you didn’t get to, or by simply finding questions of that type in untouched sections (home-grown Search & Destroy sets).

Review and recycle the problems you marked for a Re-Do in your syllabus and Strategy Log. Remember: Revisiting old material is every bit as helpful as encountering new material.

Want to really push yourself? Write solutions for tough questions on the Manhattan Prep LSAT Forums . Compare your explanation to the one our Instructors wrote. You can also ask them for feedback.

LR

Once you’ve assigned yourself all five of the most recent LSATs (found in your Student Center) and a weekly test split up into sections, chop up the remaining tests in LSAT OG2 to do LR timing drills. Set timing goals that correspond to your needs and abilities and attempt the first 5, 10, or 15 questions in the amount of time you’ve chosen.

Play the “Assumption Family Portrait” game. Take an argument you find in any assumption question and try to come up with a description of the argument’s flaw; then, a strengthener, weakener, sufficient assumption, and necessary (but not sufficient) assumption. As a bonus, you can push this beyond the Assumption Family and also come up with something you can infer based on the argument, and then write a matching argument.

LG

Complete the coached replay sets in the back of your Logic Games Strategy Guide (and there are a lot more online in your Student Center).

Replay tough games multiple times—spaced repetition cements learning!

RC Practice reading under time pressure (16 minutes for 2 passages).

Getting the Most Out of Your Test-Taking

Be strict about your timing. Use the Online Proctor to ensure you get the 5 minute call, as that should impact the timing decisions you make at the end of each section.

Set a goal for every practice session. The research shows that practice with intention leads to greater improvement. Take a few minutes before you sit down to a section or full PrepTest to decide on specific areas of focus. Maybe you want to work on actively visualizing the games better, or cutting the bait on questions when you’re just spinning your wheels. Whatever your goals, articulating them before you begin is necessary for achieving them.

Remember to mark questions to review as you go. Of course you want to review the questions you got wrong, but it’s just as important to review the questions you were unsure on, even if you ultimately picked the correct answer. Digging into your process and figuring out what intuitively led you to the right choice maximizes the chances you can repeat that on test day. (Re-read how to effectively review on pp. 14–20) of this workbook.)

Your timing goals should evolve according to your performance. Test out different approaches to timing to figure out which will help you maximize the points you get with the skills you have. Don’t be afraid to test a strategy on a section and end up messing up that section—it’s worth it to find out whether a strategy is useful to you.

These exercises can (and should!) be done with any of the Logical Reasoning sections in LSAT OG2 that you do not plan to take as a complete section or PrepTest. Attempt to do the first 10 questions of the section in 10 minutes or less without compromising accuracy. If you have to sacrifice accuracy to hit that timing goal, adjust your timing goal accordingly to make sure

you get these points.
