Introduction and Purpose

The Global Navigation Satellite System Low Flight Network (GNSS LFN) is a new network of routes in Swiss airspace at lower altitudes for helicopter IFR flight. This allows flights to be less dependent on weather and therefore to have increased duty readiness in marginal weather conditions.

The operational trial phase is planned to last until 20 APR 2016. The objective of this trial is to validate the feasibility of LFN operation and to identify any constraints that need to be addressed before the network will be fully deployed. Therefore, the access to the network is limited to Swiss Air Force and to REGA. ATS is provided for joining, leaving and en-route.

Once the trial phase is completed and the validation criteria are met, the network will be opened to public use and for helicopters that meet the required navigation performance of RNP 0.3.

General Rules for Aircraft Operation on LFN

The GNSS LFN is implemented mainly in airspace class E. Several route segments pass through airspace class C and D, no routes are in airspace class G.Link-routes are created to provide access to/from STARs and SIDs at LSMD, LSME, LSMP, LSZB, LSZR, LSZA and LSHI.
