Pastor Dave Rasmussen's Comments...

If our Christian faith is only active during Sunday mornings, then we have limited influence in society. As Christians we do not have answers to the many problems of society, but if we do not offer any engage-ment outside of Sunday mornings we certainly will not have any influence at all in helping correct some of society's problems.

Many people believe that politics and religion do not mix, but that depends upon what you define as politics. There are partisan politics in which some folks seem to think that God is on their political party's side and it is their way or the highway. Think of the prohibition move-ment that led to the changing of the Constitution of the United States and the mess that followed when alcohol became illegal. It has been a long standing saying that you cannot legislate morality, but it is possible to legislate deterrence. It is of some benefit to society that we have drunk driving laws and that the law can make people take DUI classes after their conviction for driving under the influence. Those laws came about because of politics working towards public safety, and public safety is something that Christians are to consider.

It is not politics for this congregation to allow the use of its facilities as a polling place during elections. It is a service to the community much in the same way when the congregation's facilities are used by other community groups such as the Scouts or the Farm Bureau. What is not permitted is the use of funds of the congregation in support of a specific candidate or political party.

In this time of sound bites and pseudo-reporting on the Internet, people need to consider a variety of opinions in order to make better decisions. It is true that money talks but so do ordinary voices. To help you in the area of advocacy you can visit the following website http://elca.org/our-work/Publicly-Engaged-church/ELCAvotes. If you have concerns, call me (232.6215).

Unfinished Business

1. Ministry Site Profile Task Force is still working on inputting information into forms.

New Business:

1. A motion was made to replace the AC unit in room 108 for a cost not to exceed $2,000.00. The motion was seconded and passed.

2. All American Stump Grinding owned by Jimmy Mast has offered to remove the two remaining pine trees scheduled for removal and to grind the stumps from those previously removed for a reduced cost of $700. Council approved the expenditure by consensus.

3. Daniel Jowers would like to replace the beams/repair the wooden play set and replace the edging on the play area as his Eagle Scout Project. Council approved by consensus.

4. Due to a large number of people coming into our facility for the November Election it would be a good opportunity for members of the community to learn about our ministry. Suggestions included handing out water, having Welcome packets out, putting up displays about activities and making sure things were cleaned up. Evangelism committee was asked to look into this.

5. Discussed the Ministry Review Presentation. A motion was made and passed that we go through the Ministry Review Team process.

Announcements/ Correspondence

1. Letter from Wittenburg University about scholarships available for high school senior students with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

2. Correspondence about advertising on a Pooler City Map.

3. Due to Fall Break, next meeting will be on Oct. 2. Committees at 6pm/ Council at 7pm.

Our 144th Anniversary

Celebration Luncheon

The congregation sends its thanks to Dana Smith and his hospitality committee for an excellent meal this past Sunday, as we celebrated 144 years of worship at Zion. We also want to thank every one who planned it, helped set up and cleaned up afterward. This special time of fellowship and sharing, as we re-flect on our past and our vision for the future, is a milestone for our church that we look forward to each year.

We thank all those who brought food donations for our “Backpack Buddies” Program and Manna House too. Our shelves are filling up with nutritious food to be sent home each weekend with needy students at Marlow Elementary. Please keep our 8 students in mind when you shop each week so that we can continue the program with the help of Thrivent Action Team seed money. It was a wonderful Sunday and another wonderful Zion memory!

God’s Work. Our Hands. Sunday

We had a great turnout for our “God’s work. Our hands. Sunday” work project! 34 people of all ages from Zion went to Treutlen House where we painted and cleaned up the grounds. Members of Jerusalem and St. John’s Lutheran churches also helped work that day. It was good to see so many going out into the community and making a difference in the lives of our neighbors! Thank you to all who came out and worked so hard to make the Treutlen House a little nicer for the boys that live there!

Our junior choir and assisting minister robes are looking especially bright and spotless. Many thanks to Amy Young, who took them all home to launder and get them ready for our worship leaders. It was a big job and we really appreciate it!

All Saints Sunday, November 6, 2016

All Saints Sunday is the day we honor the memory of our loved ones who have lived and died in the faith. This is an opportunity for us at Zion to remember and give thanks to God for the lives and service of our members who have gone to live with the Lord in the past year. This year, we remember:

Bruce Warm, Doug Helmey and Nellie Freyermuth.

During worship, we will light a candle and ring a bell as their names are called. We will also light a candle in memory of others, whose names are in our hearts. All are invited to bring flowers in memory of a loved one who has died to place by the communion rail before worship that day, then place them on the graves of those buried at Zion, or take them home after the service.

Come to LIFE! on Wednesday, October 5th!

(LIFE! = Living in Faith Everyday!) No Wednesday Meal on October 19th (Fair Week)

Wednesday activities:

4:00 p.m.- K-5 Kids - Kindergarten thru 5th grade program 5:15 p.m. - A family-style meal is provided in the ZFH- for all Zion’s members and friends. 6:30 p.m. - LYO - youth meet for grades 6-12

We need help with clean-up after the meal. Please prayerfully consider if God may be calling you to help with this vital ministry of Zion. Thank you!

Plan Ahead

Children’s Choir

Zion’s children’s choir is practicing every Wednesday. The group meets after school every Wednesday (except on school holidays and early release days). All children in kindergarten through

5th grade are invited to take part in this special ministry. On Sunday mornings, please have your child in the children’s Sunday School ar-ea by 10:45 a.m. This will allow children time to robe and practice their song before worship begins.

There are several options for getting your child to practice. For those attending Marlow Elementary, bus route 49 drops off students at Zion each week. Children attending Sand Hill Elementary are picked up as car riders by Zion’s designated driver. Parents must provide a note to the school with a request for special transportation. You can send one note for the entire year. If your child attends a school other than Marlow or Sandhill and needs transportation, please let us know. Parents can also choose to make their own arrangements for transportation to Zion.

A light snack is served as soon as children arrive. If you would like to assist with snacks or make a donation, please contact Dana Lee Smith. Rehearsals begin at 3:15 p.m. and end at 4:00 p.m. Please make sure that pick-up arrangements are made for your child.

On the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays, there is a K-5 program that begins at 4:00 p.m. A fellowship meal for families is served at 5:15 p.m. Please note that in October there will only be a K-5 program and meal on the 1st Wednesday. The choir will practice on 3rd Wednesday but, there will not be a K-5 program and meal following due to fair week.

Please o ta t Da a Lee S ith -13 for ore i for aio .

Prayer Chain Our Prayer Chain Call-Out system has worked very well to inform members of prayer requests as they arise through the week. We also can send you calls with reminders of announcements and upcoming events. If you would like to receive calls, please add your name and preferred contact phone number to the list in the narthex.

Women of the ELCA by Cheryl Pannal

Wow, we had an amazing trip to the Peachtree Corners Hilton in Atlanta where we attended the 29th Annual Women of the ELCA Convention. We had seven ladies in attendance: Amy Young, Norma Ralph, Sheila Moon (Delegate), Dana Lee Smith (Music Leader), Tammie Griffin, Cheryl Pannal (Board Member), and Toni Hadden (St. Paul’s). It was an amazing weekend of Worship, reconnecting with our sisters in SE Synod, meeting new friends (as we had a large number of first timers), and educating ourselves on a wide array of subjects. Next year our convention will be September 15th through 17th in Nashville, TN. Please try to make plans to attend.

Save the date for our Spring Cluster, April 29, 2017. It will be held at St. James in Brunswick.

Zion Ladies, please make plans to attend our next quarterly meeting. It is scheduled for November 13th, immediately following worship. This is a great time to find out what has been going on in all of our circles and all of the many projects coming up during the Holiday Season.

All ladies of our church are members of WELCA here at Zion. Remember this is your organization. Please check the calendar page for information on Bible study meeting times and places. If you have questions or would like more information, contact Cheryl Pannal at 667-5315.

MOWERS NEEDED! Zion is looking for volunteers to help mow the

Cemetery on October 29th from 8 a.m. to noon. If you would like to volunteer,

please contact Craig Pittman at 912-728-5196.

Volunteers of all ages are welcome and appreciated.
