You whohave no money, come, receive grainand eat; Come, without paying andwithout cost, drink wine and milk!”RESPONSORIAL PSALM:Ps. 29 “The Lord will bless hispeople with peace.” or(new) opt: Isa 12:2-3, 4bcd, 5-6“With joy you will draw water at thefountain of salvation.”SECOND READING:Acts 10: 34-38 “God anointed himwith the Holy Spirit and withpower.” or(new) opt: 1 John 5:1-9Everyone who believes that Jesus is theChrist is begotten by God, and every-one who loves the father loves (also) theone begotten by him.GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:Mk. 9: 6 “The heavens were openedand the Father's voice was heard:this is my beloved Son; hear him.”GOSPEL:(new) Mark 1:7-11 One mightier thanI is coming after me. I am not worthy tostoop and loosen the thongs of his san-dals. I have baptized you with water;he will baptize you with the holySpirit."

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: Lamb ofGod, call of God, receptivity, dis-cipleship, , obedience

FOCUS: “This is my beloved Son;hear him.” Jesus is inauguratedinto his earthly ministry.

REFLECTION: “...the moralstrength of the spirit is effected bythe regenerating action of baptism, through which man is granted jus-tification and the strength to actafter God in righteousness and trueholiness.” Theophane the Recluse

“Through Christ we see as in amirror the spotless and excellentface of God.” St. Clement of Rome

“Smile. It makes everyone feel good.Let anyone who comes to you goaway feeling better and happier.Every one should see goodness inyour face, in your eyes, in yoursmile. Joy shows from the eyes, itappears when we speak and walk. Itcannot be kept closed inside us Itreacts outside. Joy is very infec-tious.” Mother Teresa of Calcutta

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: This celebrationbrings the Christmas season to a glo-rious end with God saying, “This ismy beloved Son; hear him.” Withthat introduction (!), Jesus ends hishidden years and begins his missionon earth. He now goes forth into theworld with the Good News of God’ssalvation through through love.Hearing the message of Jesus, we,too, go forth to reveal God’s love tothe world. This is an appropriatetime to call for lay ministers, peoplewho want to follow Christ and bringhis light to others. Current lay min-isters should be recognized andthanked; they could contribute tothe bulletin or the homily on thefunction and value of their ministry, and invite people to join them.

SUGGESTED PREFACE/PRAYERSELECTIONS:Sprinkling rite orPenitential rite: Third form with thirdset of invocations.Prayers over the people: NinthSolemn Blessing for Christmas orSolemn Blessing for Epiphany

R.C.I.A. In the Eastern Church there is apractice known as the “Poustinia”which is Russian for desert. It in-volves the practice of going intoseclusion to pray. The object is toleave the distractions of the worldtemporarily so that peace and theawareness of God may be internal-ized and give one strength to live inthe world. To interiorize solitude is to be ableto draw from that well of strength

even in the clamor of daily life. • Meditate on the solemnity, thesignificance, the sublimity, of theincarnation.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Recount, with the children’s help, the entire Christmas story from theAnnunciation to the Baptism. Em-phasize that this is God we are talk-ing about here. What does it mean, to hear Jesus? Itmeans to pay attention to whatJesus says and does. Watch him, live like him. How can we revealGod’s love to the world like Jesusdid? Mother Teresa did it by tend-ing the dying. Pope John Paul IIdoes it by being a good leader andteacher. The Little Flower did it bybeing kind and loving to all thosearound her. There are as many waysas there are people. Smile. That’s astart. _________________________________________________________________________

  • FIRST READING: Jon. 3: 1-5, 10 “The Ninevites re-nounced their evil ways.”RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps. 25 “Lord, make known to meyour ways.”SECOND READING:1 Cor. 7: 29-31 “The world as weknow it is passing away.”GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:Mk. 1: 15 “The kingdom of God isnear: believe the Good News!”GOSPEL: Mk. 1: 14-20 “Repent, and believe the Good News.”

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: forgive-ness, repentance, mercy, kingdomof God, metanoia, proclamation ofthe Good News

FOCUS: “The kingdom of God isclose at hand. Repent and believethe Good News.”

REFLECTION: “Learn to fix theeye of faith on the divine word ofthe Holy Scriptures as on a lightshining in a dark place until the daydawns and the day-star arises in ourhearts. For the ineffable source fromwhich this lamp borrows its light isthe Light that shines in darkness butthe darkness does not comprehendit. To see it, our hearts must be puri-fied by faith.” St. Catherine of Siena

“In purely contemplative prayer, words and thoughts themselvesdisappear, not by our own will, butof their own accord. Prayer of themind changes into prayer of theheart, or rather into prayer of themind in the heart: its appearancecoincides with the birth of warmthin the heart. From now on in theusual course of spiritual life there isno other prayer. This prayer, takingdeep root in the heart, may be with-out words or thought: it may consistonly in a standing before God, in anopening of the heart to Him in rev-erence and love.” Theophane the Recluse

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time: Cycle B

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY:Introduce the liturgy by stating thatwe have been commissioned to liveand proclaim the Gospel and that indoing so we will bring ourselvesand others to the Kingdom of God.This is a responsibility we must nottake lightly.Opening Prayer: See alternateSample General Intercessions—Introduction: Gathered together asbrothers and sisters, let us call tomind that the Kingdom of God isnear - it is in our hearts - and thatGod always hears our prayer.• For pastors and spiritual leaders ev-erywhere, that they may lead in faith andserve in love the flock entrusted to theircare;• For a world hungry for true peace, thatpeople search within for the solution toexterior strife;• For our suffering sisters and brothers, that they may experience the closeness ofGod’s kingdom and have their sorrowsturned to joy;• For our community and families, thatwe learn what is truly important in life.

Preface for Sundays in O.T.: 1 or 8Prayers over the people: 6 or 11

R.C.I.A.Jesus began his ministry in a littlebackwater village known as Galilee. Its inhabitants were considered onthe fringe of accepted Jewish cul-ture, people of marginal acceptabil-ity.• Do you ever feel you are not ready for God? You are.• Do you feel worthy of God’s love? You are.

The reaction of the first disciples isan example of how to respond toChrist. The disciples dropped every-thing and followed Jesus because ofthe sheer power of his presence, theringing truth of his words, his mes-sage of heaven earned by love onearth. We can allow ourselves to feelthe most intense love for him and histruth, the Good News.

Children’s Liturgy of the WordAs you read the gospel selectionemphasize the Good News.• What does the Good News mean? How does one live the Good News?Is there any better way to live? Arepeople who lead lives of greed andrevenge happier than those wholove and respect everyone?_____________________________________

Let uspray to God who has enlightened ourhearts so that we might be able to seeand hear him.• For all that have dedicated themselvesto God; that their hearts remain warm inan often cold world;• For all people in all cultures, that the Lord bless the world with peace;• May we be the instuments of His peace;• For all those deprived of freedom and all who are oppressed because of what

they believe, that the message of Christlove touch their lives;• For our families and community, that through the Holy Spirit we may bring the Good News of God's pres- ence to those around us.

R.C.I.A.We are offered a share in the divinegift, God's love. We are asked in re-turn to love others, even though, likeus, they may not deserve it. In recog-nizing the merciful love Jesus bringsto our lives, we realize the imperativeto abandon judging others and lim-ited our love to only a few.

Children’s Liturgy of the WordAfter reading the gospel to the chil-dren, point out that spiritual healingstill occurs today. This happensthrough the Eucharist, which is agreat source of our strength. It is thehealing food that feeds our spiritsrather than our bodies and nourishesus in the ways that are most impor-tant._____________________________________

    • For the Holy Church of God, that withGod‘s grace, we may heal the divisionsamong us followers of Jesus; for it issupremely sad that Christians fight eachother;• For all people of the world, that thedivisions created by greed and revenge bereplaced by a unity in our love of oneanother;• For those deprived of freedom and allwho are oppressed because of their beliefs, that their sadness be healed;• For all women who suffer cruelty andmistreatment, that the Lord will comfortand strengthen them;• For ourselves and our community, thatwe recognize Christ who leads us to theFather and eternal life in paradise.

Preface for Sundays in O.T.: ThirdIntroduce the breaking of the breadby saying that the unlimited healingpower of Jesus is present in this verybread. This bread was given to us byJesus for the purpose of healing andstrengthening us by bringing uscloser to him.Prayers over the people: Seventh

R.C.I.A.Jesus helps us to find the strength torespond to God with love. This iswhat the journey of the catechumenis all about: to learn to be closer toGod through Jesus, and in turn closerto each other.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Invite the children to imagine theyare in a quiet, peaceful place, maybea beautiful forest in the early morn-ing. What would they hear? Howwould they feel? Jesus got up early and went to quietplaces. He went to pray and be closeto God. Today’s gospel tells a story ofhealing and praying. Encourage thechildren to find their own quiet timeto reflect and find their strength inG o d .____________________________________

  • FIRST READING: Lev. 13: 1-2, 44-46 “As long as he is unclean, he mustlive alone, outside the camp.”RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps. 32 “I turn to you, Lord, in timesof trouble, and you fill me with thejoy of salvation.”SECOND READING:1 Cor. 10: 31—11-1 “God in his wis-dom predestined our glory beforethe ages began.”GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:See Lectionary 164; “Alleluia”GOSPEL: Mt. 1: 40-45“He sent the leper from him and hewas cured.”

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: healing, compassion, imitation of Christ, purification.

FOCUS: “I have come not to abol-ish the law or the prophets but tocomplete them.” Jesus taught thathis law is not about what we canand can’t do. Instead, we are givena new understanding: Not only ouractions but even our thoughts andyearnings affect our ability to loveGod and all his children.

REFLECTION:“As he thinketh in his heart, so ishe.” Proverbs 23:7

“On a journey, a monk ran into aparty of handmaids of the Lord.Seeing them he gave them a wideberth. But the Abbess said to him: Ifyou were a perfect monk, youwould not even have looked closeenough to see that we werewomen.”

Wisdom of the Desert Fathers“Two hermits encounter one an-other and respond with warm affec-tion. They do not hesitate, or assesseach other, they make no judge-ments. They open wide their arms.To accept people as they are with-out wanting to change them, is theessence of love.”

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: Introduce the Sprin-kling Rite: through the waters of bap-tism we have arrived in a land with-out borders, where there is newmeaning to God’s law. Introduce thebreaking of the bread: the Eucharist isa source of the grace we need to trans-form our thoughts and hearts so thatwe can live in this new land. Othersources of grace include being withpeople who love God (a wide-armedgesture could be used here), andprayer.

SUGGESTED PREFACE/PRAYERSELECTIONS:Preface for Sundays in O.T.: 7thSample General Intercessions:My brothers and sisters, let us pray toGod who does wondrous things forus, because He loves us:• For the Holy Church of God, that it remain attentive and awake to the needs of all people;• For those who work for peace and mercy, that they may have the strength they need;• For those in positions of authority, that the Lord Jesus will guide them to seek good for all humankind;• For all those deprived of freedom be- cause of what they believe or what they are, that God will deliver them from oppression;• For our parish and local community that Christ will find us watchful and ready at his coming;• May I have the discernment, O Lord, to understand your Way and to follow it all my life.Prayers over the people: 2 or 6

R.C.I.A• What does the gospel say about our inner thoughts? God’s grace is necessary to achievethe peace of mind we need to do hisbidding: Love thy neighbor as thy-self. Lucky for us, God’s grace is com-ing right at us at all times. All we haveto do is open our eyes to see it, openour hearts to feel it. God loves us. Heloves Protestants and Catholics alike, and Muslims and Hindus, too.

Children’s Liturgy of the WordIn today’s gospel, Jesus tells us it isn’tenough to be nice to people, in ourhearts we have to really wish themwell. This means accepting all God’screatures as lovable, it means want-ing other people to be happy, itmeans sincerely forgiving those whowrong us. It’s not just that we can’t bevindictive, it also means no desire forrevenge, no desire to even the score*.Sometimes we have to just put thingsout of our minds and go on withfollowing Jesus.*A sports metaphor that older chil-dren understand. Pointing out ametaphor or analogy offers an op-portunity to talk about teaching de-vices in general, methods of getting apoint across.____________________________________

  • FIRST READING: Is. 43: 18-19, 21-22, 24-25 “On account of me youriniquities are blotted out.”RESPONSORIAL PSALM:Ps. 41 “Lord, heal my soul, for Ihave sinned.”SECOND READING:2 Cor. 1: 18-22 “Every promise ofGod finds its affirmation in Jesus.”GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: “Alleluia.”GOSPEL:Mk. 2: 1-12 “The Son of Man hasauthority on earth to forgive sins .”

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: forgive-ness, authority, pardon, mercy.

FOCUS: “We are called to be likeJesus and forgive the sins of others, and to allow miracles to happen.”

REFLECTION: “You say that youare offended. To be offended at lackof attention is to consider oneselfworthy of attention, and conse-quently to set a high value upononeself in the heart; in other words,to have a heart swollen with pride. Is this good?” Theophane the Recluse

“Again and again our judgementabout an issue depends on the wayour sympathies are engaged; a per-sonal preference can easily rob us ofthe power to see straight. This obsti-nacy in our own opinions wouldhave less power to disturb ourjudgements if all the desire of ourhearts found its only scope in God.”

“People are influenced in their ac-tions by undercurrents of self-seek-ing ... All seems to go well withthem as long as everything turnsout in accordance with their wishes, their plans; but when their wills arethwarted, they lose their balanceand get angry ... Let awareness ofour own self-seeking lead us to livea humble life following the teach-ings of Christ.” Thomas àKempis

urgy by stating that, strengthened bythe Word of God, and empoweredthrough partaking of the Eucharist,we receive the grace necessary to fol-low Christ. An invitation to theLord’s Prayer could point out that itis God’s grace that is leading us topray.

SUGGESTED PREFACE/PRAYERSELECTIONS:Sample General Intercessions—My sisters and brothers, we are calledto lead our lives in a spirit of totalmercy for others. Let us ask the Lordto guide us:• For the people of God, that we maypractice love and compassion for puremotives with no expectation of any re-ward, but becuse we love Him.• For the peace and well-being of thewhole world, that we allow God’s grace tolead us to Him;• For those who suffer from oppression, that they may be comforted by awarenessof God’s presence and love;• For all those who hunger for consola-tion, that they receive the joyful messagethat God is here among us;• For our families and community, thatthrough our love they are led to see God’sgrace in all people.

Preface for Sundays in O.T.: SixthPrayers over the people: Second

R.C.I.A.The sacraments of the Church are aprimary source of grace. By makingfrequent use of them we find it evereasier to do what God asks of us.• What does God ask of us?

Children’s Liturgy of the WordJesus tells us to love those who hurtus just as much as those who treat uskindly. He says its easy to be nice tothose who are nice to us, but he wantsus to be kind to everyone. That meansno getting even when someone hurtsus. It means being friendly to thosewho need a friend, not just to thosewith whom we want to be friends. Itmeans refraining from hurtingpeople, even when we have the

power to hurt them. But we don’t have to spend a lot oftime with people who hurt us. Wecan love them from a distance, think-ing good thoughts about them andpraying for them.____________________________________

Faith FormationThose who accept the Word of Godare members of the family of Christ. Many may hear the words of Christand fail to understand them.Today’s gospel points out that thefamily of God is about newness, re-newal and a reawakening to God inour midst. Talk about the need to seethe newness that dwells within us..

    Children’s Liturgyof the Word

What was the point that Jesus wastrying to make? What does it meanthat we should have new wineskins. How is each day new? Focuson the idea that things are alwaysnew. Everyone gets a new day totackle. We shall always encounternew experiences. Being a part of thefamily of God is to see newness inothers. Ask the children to reflect onfamily as being something beyondthe immediate siblings.

SCRIPTURAL TOPICS: kingdomof heaven; fidelity to God; refuge

FOCUS: “Then he said to the manStretch out your hand. The man didso and his hand was perfectly re-stored.”

REFLECTION: “Let us adoreJesus in our hearts, who spentthirty years of thirty-three in si-lence; who began his public life byspending forty days in silence; whooften retired alone to spend thenight on a mountain in silence. Hewho spoke with authority, nowspends his earthly life in silence.Let us adore Jesus in the eucharisticsilence.” Mother Teresa of Calcutta

“Live in faith and hope, though itbe in darkness, for in this darknessGod protects the soul. Cast yourcare upon God for you are His andHe will not forget you. Do not thinkthat He is leaving you alone, forthat would be to wrong him.” St. John of the Cross

“Invisible in his own nature he be-came visible in ours. Beyond ourgrasp, he chose to come within ourgrasp. Existing before time began,he began to exist at a moment intime. Incapable of suffering as God,he did not refuse to be man, capableof suffering. Immortal, he chose tobe subject to the laws of death.”

Leo the Great“Miracles happen, not in opposi-tion to nature, but in opposition towhat we know of nature.” St.Augustine

APPLYING THE READINGS TOTHE LITURGY: Introduce the lit-urgy by repeating that Jesus healedon the sabbath; he was merciful

even at great risk to himself. Jesus isnot rigid, he is merciful. Let us learnfrom his mercy in the face of oppo-sition.SPRINKLING RITEPENITENTIAL RITE: third, with seventhset of sample invocations.General Intercessions—Introduction: My dear brothers andsisters, let us always allow ourmercy to shine forth.• That Christians everywhere may beresponsive to God’s mercy;• That people everywhere may work forpeace;• That all who have grown complacentin faith may turn to God again and bereconciled as visionaries of a betterworld;• That our community and families whowelcome Christ into their lives, alwaysbe aware of His mercy.Introduce the breaking of the breadby proclaiming the power of lovehas triumphed in the person ofJesus, the one we now receive.PREFACE: #6 or #7 or Sundays of Ordi-nary TimePRAYERS OVER THE PEOPLE:#2or #16

R.C.I.A.Jesus shows us that we must be mer-ciful in all our actions, even whendoing so will have results that mayharm us. How far shall we go withthis? All the way. Jesus laid down hislife for us. How shall we performthese acts of mercy? Wisely, withdiscerment and with great love.

Children’s Liturgy of the WordThe Israelites had been slaves inEgypt for many centuries. Then Godbrought them forth into freedom, and now they owned slaves. Twopoints here: 1) we must be merciful, just as God is merciful; 2) things gofrom bad to good, and from good tobad. Don’t be happy be cause youare getting your own way right now.It won’t last long. And don’t be un-happy when you don’t get your ownway any more. That willchange, too.
