01. Getting to Know Pro/DESKTOP

Pro/DESKTOP is ideal for use in schools becauseit is both powerful and one of the easiest to learn3D design programs on the market. Thanks to acorporate vision dedicated to helping education,PTC has made Pro/DESKTOP available toteachers and students through the Design andTechnology in Schools Program. But while it isused by thousands of students in many countriesof the world, it was created for industry and isused by engineers and designers to develop andmake all kinds of products. One such company isStarChaser Industries.

StarChaser Industries is using Pro/DESKTOP to develop a series ofunmanned and manned rockets, including the Thunderbird pictured inFigure 1.0. A cutaway view shows the life-support capsule on top theThunderbird rocket. StarChaser has been competing with other privatecompanies in an effort to make access to space affordable forcommercial purposes, such as launching satellites and future touristtravel. StarChaser competed in the “X-Prize” competition for the $10Million prize.

The “X-Prize” was awarded to the first private company that launchedthree people 100 kilometers (62.5 miles) high and landed them safelyback to earth; then launched them again in the same rocket within twoweeks. The X-Prize was won by Scaled Composites in October of2004with their “Space Ship One.” Figure 1.1 shows Space Ship Onehanging underneath the “White Knight,” the aircraft that transportsthe craft to an altitude of 70,000 feet. The rocket is then dropped andtravels straight up to the edge of space.

01. Getting to Know Pro/DESKTOP

IntroductionComputer-aided design (CAD) is the name given to the process ofdesigning products on the computer. CAD is used by architects, interiordesigners, engineers, industrial designers, fashion designers, shipdesigners, aircraft designers, shoe designers and almost every otherkind of designer you can think of. There is a wide range of CADprograms, some aimed at specialized design fields, such as landscapearchitecture or textile design. This book is about a particular kind ofCAD software used for product and component development. It hasunique features that allow the designer to smoothly move from theinitial, “hazy” ideas of a project (sometimes called the “fuzzy frontend” of design), through the refinement of these ideas, to the finalstages of modeling and production of an actual product. Pro/DESKTOPis a CAD program intended for use by industrial designers or engineersin what might be called general purpose product design.

In this first chapter you will be introduced toPro/DESKTOP, a 3D design software programcreated by PTC, Incorporated. PTC is one of thelargest mechanical engineering design softwaredevelopers in the world. While PTC is known for avariety of products, it is probably best known forPro/ENGINEER, a “high-end” design softwareprogram used by many companies to create verycomplex products and systems, such as aircraft, oceangoing ships, automobiles, cell phones and a wide-

range of other products. Pro/DESKTOP has some of the samecapabilities as “high end” programs and is used in industry by somecompanies to develop design ideas before moving to these morecomplex programs. Other companies use Pro/DESKTOP as theirprimary design tool.

01. Getting to Know Pro/DESKTOP

Many CAD software packages even permit files to be exported thatlead directly to the production of a prototype through computer-controlled machines.

Pro/DESKTOP allows the designer to create satisfying images in afriendly and intuitive way, circumventing the need for good drawingskills. Many students even report that the program’s ability to createforms, manipulate lighting and simulate surfaces helps themunderstand and learn the ideas behind the drawing skills.

DesignThere are many definitions of design. Nearly all definitions, however,have in common the understanding that design involves the making ofchoices among a number of (often conflicting) factors that willinfluence the final outcome. In industry, the design of a product mayinvolve such choices as materials, ergonomics, production processes,aesthetics, environmental impact, distribution and marketing of theproduct. Within each of these factors there are often many more choicesthat must be made. For example, within the realm of environmentalimpact, the materials, processes, finishes, packaging, and disposal of theproduct when its useful life is over, should be considered. Whenstudents study design and technology, they take on the role of designer.When they design, they are weighing these and other factors andgaining a deeper understanding of the technological world.

Throughout this book we will show you how to use thePro/DESKTOP program and provide you with challenges that willhelp you learn about design. The challenges will begin with step-by-step instructions, but as you become more familiar with the software,the challenges will be less specific. This will give you the opportunityto apply what you have learned about Pro/DESKTOP and to makemore of the design decisions yourself.

The design of aircraft and rockets, as well as most of the things youuse everyday, is now done on computers. Computer-Aided Designreduces the time it takes for a company to bring a product to themarketplace, which saves the company money. A company that savesmoney developing a product can sell that product at lower cost. CADalso helps companies make changes and improvements in the designof products more quickly and less expensively.

The design of a new product is what makes it a success or a failure.Well-designed products do what they are intended to do, they do itwell, and they do it for a long time. Another way of saying this is: “awell-designed product gives the customer value.” CAD offerscompanies a way to allow designers, engineers, marketing people andothers to participate in the development of products throughout theproduct development process. Products created in this way tend to bebetter designed and more successful.

Why CAD?Designers use many strategies and techniques to investigate designideas and communicate them to others. These techniques include free-hand sketching, finished drawings, renderings, and three-dimensionalmodels. Critical to the role of designer is the ability to draw wellenough to express and develop ideas visually. Because the languageof drawing, like the ability to design, has been under appreciated inschool, few children or adults feel comfortable with this skill. In thepast few years, however, the designer has gained a new set of tools incomputer-aided design software.

CAD software can permit the designer to create designs more rapidlyas well as designs that are more accurate, and more rapidly rendered.Design files created in CAD software can be shared among variousstakeholders in the design, allowing rapid refinement of design ideas.

manufacture it. The drawings created by the draftsperson are used tofigure out the size to cut material, locate where holes must be drilledand figure out where all the parts go in the assembly of the product.

Drafting began with paper and pencil drawings and moved tocomputer-aided drafting programs as computers were developed. Butnew, more powerful computer software has changed the way productsare both designed and produced. Three-dimensional design software,like Pro/DESKTOP, not only lets the designer model and test thedesign before it's built, it also produces final drawings, eliminating theneed for a draftsperson.

The Pro/DESKTOP ProgramPro/DESKTOP is a 3D design solid-modeling program that allowsthe user to create realistic 3D images of parts and products. The termsolid-modeling means that each object you create, no matter howcomplicated, is still a geometric solid. If you have taken a course ingeometry, you will appreciate how complex it would be to describe inmathematics even simple solid objects you see around you. Even apencil is quite a complex solid. What makes Pro/DESKTOP sopowerful is that the program also creates all the mathematicalinformation needed to actually make the part automatically. Theinformation is in the form of geometric data that special programs canread and translate into code. This code is then used by computer-guided machines to produce the shape of the part.

In the highly technological society of today, most products and partsare made by machines. People manage the machines, that is, they setthem up, adjust them, clean them, and get them ready for the rawmaterials that will be used to make the parts. People also troubleshoot

Design is Different from DraftingDesign is a kind of thinking we use to make things. Design thinkinghappens when we get an idea about something that we want, thenfigure out how to make it. Human beings are born with the ability todesign, but learning more about design makes the ability morepowerful. We use this kind of thinking every day to plan what wewear, to arrange our room, to draw a map, to cook a meal. In its morecomplex forms, professionals use design to create all of thetechnological products around us––from skyscrapers to space vehiclesand from clothing to software.

Computer modeling is used by designers, architects and engineers allover the world. It wasn’t too many years ago when there were nocomputers (or the computers were not powerful enough) so all designwork was done on paper. Times have changed and now almosteveryone has access to a computer, and design software has becomeboth powerful and affordable.

When we design we make drawings and models so that we canevaluate what we have imagined. Design is a process that involvesthinking, analyzing, thinking again, analyzing again, and so on. Whiledesign involves many other things, getting an idea out of your headand to a place where you can look at it, evaluate it, and change it is ofprimary importance. Writers jot down notes, make rough drafts oftheir thoughts, refine the wording, and rewrite again. A designer doesthe same thing with her ideas about products.

Drafting is making drawings of the final solution so that it can then bemanufactured, constructed and produced. In other words, design isfiguring out how to do something and drafting is showing others howto do it. A designer and an engineer will design a car, then call in adraftsperson to make drawings of the designs so that others can

Humans vs. the MachineWhen we create new technologies we create dilemmas. A dilemma is a situation in which you find there are no clear right or wrong choices. The invention of the industrial robot is such a dilemma.

Robots can do difficult, hazardous, and very precise work, often doingthings that people cannot do. However, robots can sometimes do workthat people do and perform it better and longer. A robot can work in the dark, work 24 hours a day for weeks on end without stopping (no coffee breaks or sick days) and never complain that the factory is too noisy or cold. But the people that used to do the work are nownot taking home a paycheck.

The issues are complex. Perhaps the displaced worker can find another job that pays the same or more. Perhaps not. Here are a few of the arguments both for and against replacing people with machines.Of course there are many more. Can you think of any arguments thathave not been included here?

and fix problems with the machines. In many cases machines canmake products more quickly and more accurately than people can.

However, it would not make sense to have everything made bymachine – for machines to have all the jobs. People must work to earnmoney so they can afford to buy the things machines make. It makessense to use machines to do the things that people cannot do: work indangerous environments, make highly accurate parts and make theproduction of products more efficient. But one of the most importantissues facing society today is the question of the limits of thatefficiency. In other words, “How will we know when too many jobshave been replaced by machines?” The answer to this question is notsimple. You may get one answer from the Board of Directors of acompany, and a different answer from the Board of Directors of thelabor union representing the people who work at the company.

Interface. Design is 3D (3 Dimensional), Drawing is 2D (2-Dimensional) and is sometimes called drafting, and Album is forcreating realistic renderings that are very much like photographs.Most parts are created in the Design Interface. The images above arescreen shots of the three interfaces. It is easy to tell which interfaceyou are in by the look of the screen.

The creation of an object is usually done in the Design interface. Theobject is rendered in the Album interface. Rendering is the applicationof color and textures and might include placing the object on abackground, such as the clouds in Figure 1.5. Pro/DESKTOP alsoallows you to change lighting effects to create interesting shadowsand highlights on surfaces.

Rendered objects are only pictures of the model you have designed.They do not have the geometry to actually make the part. Renderedimages are often used by designers to show to clients and otherpeople working on the product design. A carefully rendered image canbe so realistic that it can be used in a catalog even before the realproduct is made.

The Drawing interface creates what are called orthographic drawings(Figure 1.6). In the past, this style of drawing was used primarily bythe people who made the parts and products. It was common formachinists and skilled craftsman to have orthographic drawingsspread out on a shop table and refer to them often as they cut, shaped,drilled, welded, and glued parts together to make products. Today,much of this work is done by machines, so the necessity fororthographic drawings is reduced. Chapter 11 has been devoted to theDrawing interface.

The process of making parts and products automatically is calledComputer-Aided Manufacturing or CAM. The machines are oftencalled Computer Numerical Control or CNC machines. Figure 1.2shows a CNC machine that can be found in school technology labs.Figure 1.3 shows a rapid-prototyping machine that creates models in3D using plaster.

The Pro/DESKTOP software program can create:

• 3D solid models of parts and assemblies of parts

• realistic images of a part or product – like the images you might see in a catalog;

• drawings that can be used by someone to hand-make the part or product;

• output files that can be used by machines to make the individual parts.

• output files for virtual reality viewing, like VRML on the web.

There are three environments in Pro/DESKTOP and they are called the interfaces: Design Interface, Drawing Interface, and Album

The Pro/DESKTOP DesignScreenThe Pro/DESKTOP Design screen is divided into five areas: theDesign Window, the Browser Window, the Design Toolbar, the TopToolbar Area and the Bottom Toolbar Area, as shown in Figure 1.7.You will also see the vertical Design toolbar on the right side of thescreen that contains the most commonly used tools. These windowsand the vertical tool bar are labeled in the figure.

There are a number of commands and design operations that will notbe covered in this book. If you come across something that interestsyou, there are several choices to help you find out more about it. TheContext Sensitive Help command is located on the Standard toolbarat the top of the screen. Click once on the icon and then click on anyother icon or tool on the Pro/DESKTOP screen and a new smallwindow with a detailed explanation will open. Also, the Help pull-down menu at the top of the screen is useful to look up how to usetools, create features and other important information.

Each project requires a combination of some or all of these features.In this book, each project has been selected so that it only requiresspecific features. This will allow you to learn how to use each featureand not have to learn them all at once. Advanced projects in this bookwill assume you have learned the basic features.

More on the Pro/DESKTOPDesign ScreenBrowser WindowOn the left side of the screen is the Browser Window. The BrowserWindow keeps track of the Workplanes, Sketches and Features youuse while you are designing. It will not keep track of every changeyou make to a sketch, such as changing the length of a line or eachtime you change the location of a circle. However, in the BrowserWindow you will be able to make changes to Features you have usedand add new Sketches and Workplanes. More about the Browserwindow later.

Working in the Design interface, you will draw lines and shapes on something called a Sketch that sits on a flat Workplane (seebelow). Pro/DESKTOP then allows you to turn these 2D shapes into 3D objects.

In Pro/DESKTOP, the term sketch is used to describe the place whereyou draw 2D shapes, something like a piece of paper. But the termsketch is also used to describe the actual lines you put on that “pieceof paper.” It is easy to get confused about whether someone is talkingabout the actual lines or a sketch on a workplane.

Pro/DESKTOP has a number of different operations it calls Featuresthat turn 2D shapes (on sketches) into 3D objects, including: Extrude,Project, Revolve, Sweep, and Loft. In addition, you can also roundcorners, distort the shape of flat surfaces, and create other 3D effects.

Selection ToolsThere are seven Selection Tools. From the top they are:

Line Select Tool – used to select a sketch line. When this tool is selected all sketch lines on your design are visible.

Constraint Select Tool – used to select a dimension (or otherconstraint) when you want to change or delete it. When this toolis selected all the constraints on your design are visible.

Workplane Select Tool – used to select a workplane. When thistool is selected all workplanes are visible. Sketch lines are notvisible in this mode.

Edge Select Tool – used to select an edge of a 3D solid whenyou want to round it or chamfer it (not used for sketch lines).Sketch lines are not visible in this mode.

Face Select Tool – used to select a face (surface) of a 3D solid;used often to place a new workplane and sketch on a face.Sketch lines are not visible in this mode.

Feature Select Tool – used to select a Feature, such as anextrusion; you can sometimes redefine a Feature (change thelength of the extrusion, for example) by double-clicking on thefeature with this tool. Sketch lines are not visible in this mode.

Part Select Tool – used to select a part during an assembly orused to select a part in a design. Sketch lines are not visible inthis mode.

Design Tool BarThe vertical Tool Bar on the right side of the screen (Figure 1.15)contains the tools you will use most often. These tools fall into threecategories: Selection Tools, Drawing Tools, and a Delete LineSegment Tool. You will use this tool bar constantly, so the sooner youbecome familiar with each tool and what it does, the easier it will befor you to use Pro/DESKTOP.

Don’t worry if you do not remember all the tools. When you startusing them, each tool will start to make sense and after a little timeyou will use them without really thinking about it. The reason forshowing them to you here is so you can refer back to this page whenyou begin to use the Pro/DESKTOP program.

The Pro/DESKTOPEnvironmentWorkplanes and SketchesWhen you begin a New Design Pro/DESKTOP automatically givesyou three workplanes and one sketch. The three workplanes are the Base Workplane – it lies flat (horizontal); Frontal Workplane – avertical workplane; Lateral Workplane – another vertical workplane90 degrees to the Frontal workplane.

There is a sketch called Initial on the Base Workplane. This isusually a good place to begin a design, although there are timeswhen it is better to start on one of the vertical Workplanes. Thiswill be discussed later in the book.

Pro/DESKTOP allows you to create other workplanes almostany place you wish. You can create as many sketches as youwant on each workplane. Chapter 4 shows you how to createnew Workplanes and sketches.

In Figure 1.31 you see the three workplanes. The flat BaseWorkplane, the vertical Frontal Workplane, and the othervertical Lateral Workplane. All three workplanes intersect at their

Line Tool – used to draw straight lines

Circle Tool – used to draw circles.

Rectangle Tool – used to draw rectangles; hold down theshift key while drawing with this tool to draw a square.

Ellipse Tool – used to draw ellipses.

Arc or Fillet Tool – used to draw parts of a circle.

Spline Tool – used to draw squiggly lines.

Delete Line Segment Tool – used to cut out a line or linesegment. Lines with curves usually have two or moresegments and each piece is deleted separately.

Constraints ToolbarLocated near the top of the screen is another tool you willneed. It is located in the Constraints toolbar. Although there area number of tools on this toolbar, you will only need to knowone right now.

The Sketch Dimension Tool is used to specify adimension for a line, circle, arc or angle. Once you haveconstrained a line (or a circle, etc.) you can only change its sizeby changing the constraint using the Constraint Selection tool.

Browser windows that you can choose: Components, Features andWorkplanes (Figure 1.34). You will learn more about the other twoBrowser windows as you become more skilled in usingPro/DESKTOP.

The Browser window is handy for creating new sketches on existingWorkplanes. Another useful thing you can do with the BrowserWindow is find out which Workplane and Sketch particular lines inyour design belong to. As designs become more complicated theability to identify a sketch or Workplane can save you a lot of time.

NavigationWhen you are designing with Pro/DESKTOP you will want to changeviews and move the object around the screen so you can see the top,bottom and sides, as well as zoom in and out. Here are a fewcommands and tools so you can get a better look at what you aredesigning.

Arrow Keys – Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to rotate the object(Figure 1.36).

Shift+W – This is a very handykeyboard command. It will change theview of the design window so that youare looking straight down on the activeworkplane and sketch. Often, you willuse this command immediately aftercreating a New Sketch. (Figure 1.37)

centers. The Workplanes are all visible when you click on the SelectWorkplanes tool in the Design toolbar. You cannot see sketches in theSelect Workplanes mode, although you can see solids. Pro/DESKTOPis designed so that you only see things appropriate to the mode you arein. Otherwise, the screen would become very cluttered in a short time.

The workplanes in Figure 1.32are more visible because thecommand Show workplanes asglass was checked in theOptions menu. This may helpyou visualize the workplaneswhile you are first learningPro/DESKTOP, but it willprobably become annoying whenyou become more proficient withthe program. To turn on thiscommand, go to the Tools pull-down menu and select Optionsat the bottom of the list, then select the Performance tab. Click in thebox next to “Show workplanes as glass.” To turn off this function, justclick in the box again.

The Browser WindowFigure 1.33 shows a portion of the Browser window on the left sideof the screen. The Browser is a running history of the evolution ofyour design. The yellow box with the arrows represents a workplaneand the pencil represents a sketch.

The Browser window also contains other useful information. If youclick on the down arrow next to the word Workplanes at the top ofthe Browser window, you will see there are actually three different

starting in a corner and dragging the cursor to make the box. With thePro/DESKTOP zoom tool you place the cursor in the center of theplace you are interested in enlarging. The smaller you make the boxthe more you will zoom in. The larger you make the box the less youwill zoom in. This tool takes a bit of getting used to.

Zoom Out Tool – When you click on this tool you zoom out sothe image is one-half of its original size. You can make morethan one click and zoom way out.

Tumble – Clicking on the “happy face” tool makes the objecttumble around randomly on the screen. To stop the tumblecommand, click in the Design window or press the keyboardspace bar once. Use this command on one of your more complexdesigns to impress visitors.

Automatic ViewsThese icons are located in a sub-menu. Clicking on one of the icons

changes your view of the object.

Shift+T – This command changes the view to Trimetric, which is a3D view that is good for viewing sketches while you are applyingFeatures (Figure 1.38).

Center mouse button or wheel Clicking and holding thecenter mouse button allows you to manipulate the objectby moving the mouse.

Hold down the Shift key while clicking the centermouse button – This combination allows you to drag the object around the screen with the mouse. This issometimes called Panning.

Using Tool Icons to Change ViewIn the Toolbar window on the lower part of the screen there are anumber of tools that will help you get just the view you want. Thetools are arranged in groups.

Autoscale – Clicking on this tool will make the object fill theDesign Window. You can also use the keyboard shortcutShift+A.

Autoscale Selection – If you have something selected, whether it is a line, a feature or an entire object, clicking on this tool willmake the selection fill the screen.

Zoom In Tool – Click on this tool and the cursor turns into thisshape:

To use the Zoom In Tool, you will create a box with the mouse thatwill become the full screen. In most programs you create a box by

remains at zero. Move the pointer either to the left or down and anegative number appears for the first or second number accordingly.

SummaryCAD, short for Computer-Aided Design, is used by most designprofessionals because it makes the process of design more efficientand helps companies reduce the time it take for a product to reach themarket. Pro/DESKTOP, developed by PTC, Incorporated, is a 3Ddesign and modeling software program intended for engineers andproduct designers.

The Pro/DESKTOP program has three environments: the DesignInterface, the Drawing Interface and the Album Interface. Creating 3Dobjects is usually done in the Design Interface.

Two-dimensional sketches on Workplanes are drawn first. ThenFeatures are used to create 3D solids from the sketches.

The Design Interface contains the Design Window, the Browser, theDesign toolbar, and the Top and Bottom Toolbar Areas. The Browserkeeps a running account of workplanes and sketches, and of featuresapplied to sketches. The toolbars contain icons for performing variousoperations, such as drawing and changing views.Many operations in Pro/DESKTOP can be accomplished with pull-down menu commands, keyboard shortcuts, and icons.

CAD programs keep track of the geometry of two-dimensional sketches by locating points on X-Y axes. Typically, when you are looking at these axes on the computer screen the X-axis runs

Understanding the CAD EnvironmentComputer-aided design software is different than other kinds ofprograms that allow you to draw images on the screen. To understandhow CAD software works let’s look at a simplified example: drawinga square.

Although it is not required, if you can start Pro/DESKTOP on yourcomputer, you can see on the screen what is being described in thisnext section.

• Start Pro/DESKTOP and begin a New Design by clicking onthe File pull-down window and selecting New Design from thelist.

• Expand the design window by clicking on the Maximize icon inthe upper right corner of the design window.

• Use the keyboard shortcut Shift+W (hold down the Shift keywhile pressing the W key once). This will change your view sothat you are looking directly down at the active workplane andsketch.

• Select the Straight Line tool in the Design toolbar on the rightside of the screen.

When looking at a new sketch in a Pro/DESKTOP design window,you will see the origin as a point where the bases of the two greenarrows meet. If you place a drawing tool at that point, in the top menuyou will see 0,0 as this location (Figure 1.48).

Moving around the drawing tool will give you an idea of the meaningof the two numbers. Move the tool to the right and you will see thefirst number increase while the second number remains zero. Movethe pointer up and the second number increases while the first number

horizontally and the Y-axis runs vertically . However, if you rotateyour drawing, the axes will rotate as well.
