We have all been blown away by how quickly all children have settled into their respective classes. We extend a very warm welcome to our new teacher, Miss Shaye Robson, who has joined us fresh out the JCU Centre for Excellence and has taken the Year 2/3 children under her wing. We hope she has a truly rewarding first year as a teacher at our school. It was wonderful to have so many parents attend our Parent Information Night in Week 2 – there were far more pre- sent than we expected, so we were pleasantly surprised. It is a true testament to the value that our school community places on education and their children’s success and happiness at our school. We hope those who attended got the information they were seeking and know that our doors are always open for conversations about the things we do and the ways in which we do them. It is with great pleasure that I can announce that our P&C, with the assistance of Melissa Maifredi, has been successful in winning a grant for our school from Gambling Enterprise Australia that we plan to put towards an extensive play- ground upgrade through the course of this year. Our students will be heavily involved in every stage of the upgrade, including planning, design and budgeting and the excitement is palpable. Phase 1, which involves the repair of our existing senior playground is underway at the moment; Phase 2 will be the erection of a shade cover over this particu- lar structure; and Phase 3 will involve assessing the remaining funds and allocating them to separate playground items all around the school. We will of course keep you updated on progress through our school newsletter and our school’s facebook page. We are also the very grateful recipients of a cheque of in excess of $1700 from Tully’s Teitzels’ IGA’s Community Chest program! Many thanks to those parents and community members who swipe their IGA card every time they shop, and who have allocated their points to our school. Many thanks also, to Craig and Ella-May Teitzel for their ongoing support of community initiatives. These funds will go straight into our playground upgrade. In more exciting news, the Cassowary Coast Regional Council has committed to conduct works to improve our park- ing and drainage situation at the pick-up and drop-off area on Collins Road this year, and at this stage it is proposed that these works will take place as close as possible to our June/July school holidays. As most of you will know, this area has been problematic for many, many years, especially in wet weather, so we are looking forward to being able to provide a safer and more organised pick-up and drop-off system for our school community. Please be sure to read and record the important dates for the remainder of this term on the next page of this newslet- ter. We love to see parents, grandparents and other relatives coming to these events to support their children. Of par- ticular mention is of course, our termly Family Night, which will take place on Friday 24 th March this term. These nights provide an opportunity for families to walk through their child’s classroom, look at work samples and interact with their child’s teacher in an informal and relaxed manner. Our wonderful P&C provides a delicious sausage sizzle dinner and then the activities commence. This term, the children have decided on a games night, with a variety of out- door games stations that children, parents and staff will rotate through. We urge you to take advantage of the oppor- tunity to embrace a free night out for the whole family, and come along and join the fun! Best Wishes , Julie Musumeci. PRINCIPAL PENS: What a fantastically smooth start to the 2017 school year we have enjoyed! We have all been

blown away by how quickly all children have settled into their respective classes. We extend a very warm welcome to

our new teacher, Miss Shaye Robson, who has joined us fresh out the JCU Centre for Excellence and has taken the

Year 2/3 children under her wing. We hope she has a truly rewarding first year as a teacher at our school.

It was wonderful to have so many parents attend our Parent Information Night in Week 2 – there were far more pre-

sent than we expected, so we were pleasantly surprised. It is a true testament to the value that our school community

places on education and their children’s success and happiness at our school. We hope those who attended got the

information they were seeking and know that our doors are always open for conversations about the things we do and

the ways in which we do them.

It is with great pleasure that I can announce that our P&C, with the assistance of Melissa Maifredi, has been successful

in winning a grant for our school from Gambling Enterprise Australia that we plan to put towards an extensive play-

ground upgrade through the course of this year. Our students will be heavily involved in every stage of the upgrade,

COUNTS

TEITZEL’S SUPA IGA ~ CARING FOR OUR COMMUNITY

FAREWELL & THANKYOU It is with great sadness that I officially inform the LTSS community of the retirement of Mr Ron White. Ron has been the principal at Lower Tully State School since 1982, and through decades of passionate teaching and learning, has become a pillar of this community.

Mr White is truly one of a kind, and we can only hope that his time at LTSS has given him just as much as he have given it. He has always been an in-spirational educator who ignited a love of learning in countless children and adults, and he committed such a large part of his life to making kids' lives better. We wish Mr White nothing but the absolute best as he re-flects on a career in which the impact of his work is infinite, touching and affecting hundreds of lives for the better, and we hope he can now finally take some time out for himself!

PREP & YEAR 1 NEWS

The Prep and Year 1 kids have had a delightful start to their year and are all well on their way to know-

ing all of their letters and letter sounds. Every day is filled with active learning opportunities and the chil-

dren never cease to amaze us with the richness of their thoughts and ideas.

The children have been learning lots about the importance of making good choices, and the natural con-

sequences that come along with the choices they make. We have also had many discussions about differ-

ent emotions and possible causes and antecedents to these, with a view to assisting with self-regulation.

We are very much looking forward to our class assembly on Friday 10th March at 2.30pm where will

have the opportunity to show parents and friends some of the things we have been learning about!

We would like to send out a request to families for construction objects such as boxes, containers, lids,

milk bottles and other types of packaging that the children may be able to use to build some fantastic

creations. There will be a bin placed outside our classroom for you to leave such things in. Please ensure

that these items are clean before bringing them to school.

Please remember that our library day is Thursday, and children need to return their books by that day

each week in order to be able to borrow new ones.

Kind regards,

Julie Musumeci

Year 4/5/6 : Term 1, Week 6

As we move past the halfway mark of our first term of 2017, I am delighted that all students in the

4/5/6 class have settled into their new roles as the seniors and leaders of LTSS. As a class, we have had

many interesting and informative discussions about what it means to be the seniors and leaders of our

school. What are the responsibilities? What are the day-to-day expectations in behaviour?

If we were to put into one simple sentence it would have to be:

Lead by example

It is essential that every child in the class realises that the younger children look up to them and view

them as their role models. So doing and saying the right thing all the time is vital – even when there are

no adults looking on or listening in. If our school is to continue to be a place filled with learning, laugh-

ter and love our leaders and seniors need to model our values of LOYALTY, TOLERANCE,

STRENGTH and SUCCESS. I am confident that this fine cohort of children will continue to grow in

maturity throughout the year and continue to gain a deeper understanding of the benefits of living

these fine values that we hold dear at LTSS in their daily lives.

The Year 4/5/6 class assembly is Friday, 17th March, 2017. I do hope as many of our parents as possi-

ble will be able to take time out of your busy schedules to be with us.

Being Safe Online

Keep the PC/laptop/tablet in a location that is easy for you to monitor..

Do not allow your child to share any personal information – such as real name, age, email ad-

dress, physical address and/or phone numbers – without your knowledge and/or permission.

Encourage children to talk with you about any online communications that might be confusing

or inappropriate.

Start with a couple of websites that you have approved; after that, have your child ask your per-

mission to visit others as the need arises.

ABCs of Student Success A is for Attendance

Attendance is a critical factor in any child’s school success. Children should attend school EVERY day,

except in cases of illness or emergency. It is impossible to replace the learning that happens on any

school day with make-up work. Regular attendance and promptness are good habits for life. These hab-

its are expected and appreciated at all levels of schooling and in the workplace.

Research shows that students who have a good attendance record are more likely to achieve high re-

sults at school. Visit http://education.qld.gov.au/everydaycounts/fact-sheet.html for more information

on the importance of student attendance.

Make school a priority in your household. Commit to excellence in attendance. Your child’s future de-

pends on it!

GOSS FROM THE YRS 2 & 3

Wow! I would like to thank the students and parents for making me feel so welcome at Lower Tully. It is such a wonderful and welcom-ing school and I feel truly blessed to be teaching here. The last 5 weeks has been a pleasure teaching Year 2/3. I have enjoyed meeting and getting to know all the students.

It has been a busy time in our classroom. We have been learning about persuasive text in English. The students have been able to persuade myself and Miss Maria to get a class pet fish. We hope to welcome our beautiful new class member Regina Fish to Year 2/3 soon.

Other learning, we have undertaken so far this term includes recy-cling and reusing activities for technology, growing plants in sci-ence, as well as practicing some measurement skills in a cooking activity. There will be plenty more exciting activities and learning to come throughout the year.

Shaye Robson,

Classroom Teacher

Sincere thanks was extended to Jonette Wright who had diligently recorded

the minutes in the position of Secretary for the past 3 years.

Congratulations to all who have taken on a positon as we are sure our

school is in good hands whilst we work together towards the common good

and welfare for our students.

Excitement was evident amongst those present about the successful applica-
