So Why Am I Here?

What To Do? My Two Cents

• We need more “doers” and less talkers

• Entrepreneurship ≠ Risk

• Learn to manage risk• Early experience & exposure to

entrepreneurialism

• In the past 2 years, more than 25,000 small businesses began operating in Canada.

• In the past year, 45,000 more Canadians have become “self-employed”.

• 1 in 4 of these new business owners have post secondary education (double from 1990).

• 8% of Canadians are currently self-employed (approx.2,700,000)

Entrepreneurship: Some Facts

Page 17: Loyalist Presentation 2012

Thoughts?

Page 18: Loyalist Presentation 2012

Young Entrepreneurs• Lack experience

– How they’re raised?– How they’re educated?

• Need depth of skill• Skill + Experience = Performance, fast• Limiting variables = Increased success

– Many student entrepreneurship opportunities take advantage of this: service, market, system

Experiential Learning

Page 20: Loyalist Presentation 2012

The Gap

• Learning & Knowledge deficiency can often lead to the perception of it being riskier

Page 21: Loyalist Presentation 2012

What is “Risk” to a student?

Page 22: Loyalist Presentation 2012

Risk: DefinedRisk is defined as: • exposure to the chance of injury or loss;

danger; hazard.• the possibility of incurring misfortune or loss;

hazard

Page 23: Loyalist Presentation 2012

Risk: Young Entrepreneur Perspective

• It’s not a risk – it’s calculated. Vegas is a risk. Entrepreneurs don’t take risk, we plan and then execute.

• You are the risk – you make the decisions.• The opportunity cost associated with pursuing a

particular route.• Failure, and the need to start over again.

Page 24: Loyalist Presentation 2012

Not a Couple of Years From Now

• You have some career decisions to make…

– Employee

– Entrepreneur

25

Page 25: Loyalist Presentation 2012

• What are some of the differences?

• Consider risks of both & benefits of both

• Tend to focus on losing what we have (or what we think we have)

Entrepreneur vs Employee

Page 26: Loyalist Presentation 2012

• Practice now – get involved

• Gather Advisors & Coaches

• Later you’ll have more to lose

• Become involved in programs that provide you with responsibility
