Winter 2018 Supporting the survivors of New England LEDGER LEDGER The Loyal Please note that this newsletter is printed only once a year with all other notices and updates sent via e-mail. PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Hello ~ For those of you whom I may not have met yet, my name is Maryellen Barry, and I'm honored to be serving as President of New England C.O.P.S. My husband Paul was a Massachusetts State Trooper killed in the line of duty on June 15th, 2006, additionally leaving behind our seven children, his parents, siblings, co-workers, friends, and extended family. My children and I traveled to DC for our first Police Week in May of 2007, and were fortunate to connect with our C.O.P.S. Chapter prior to that incredibly emotional trip. I've been on the Advisory Board for the past several years, and I'm looking forward to working closely with the other officers on our board to carry on the dedicated and amazing work of Kim McCarthy, Heather Rossetti, Corrina Carter, and Rebecca McCallister. We have a very active and successful Chapter, and are committed to serving our surviving families in six states. We host fundraisers during the course of the year to sustain our Chapter and to help us to assist families to the best of our ability. We also host training seminars to offer additional education about Line of Duty Loss and Departmental Policies to Law Enforcement personnel, our C.O.P.S. members, and the public. We additionally hold family get togethers such as our Christmas party at Great Wolf Lodge, and our Fall weekend at Rocking Horse Ranch. These wonderful events are sponsored at a reduced rate to the attendees by our Chapter, and enable families to connect and establish extremely beneficial and life-long friendships with other surviving families. I'm looking forward to working with each of you, listening to your thoughts and ideas, and continuing our tremendous outreach to all surviving family members in our New England C.O.P.S. Chapter. Very Truly Yours, With my best wishes and warmest regards, Maryellen Maryellen Barry

A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORThe mission of the New England Chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors is to provide ongoing peer support to the survivors whose loved ones are tragically killed inthe line of duty. N.E.C.O.P.S has partnered with my current employer, The NewEngland State Police Information Network (NESPIN) in educating and emphasizingthe importance of being properly prepared for a Line of Duty Death incident(LODD).

NESPIN has co-sponsored several training seminars this past year on this very topicwhere many Police Chiefs, Agency heads, and police officers of all ranks havelearned a tremendous amount of information about LODD benefits, LODD policiesand how a death of an officer can create shock, cause stress and overwhelming sadness to not only the officer’s family but to the officer’s department as well.

Beyond supporting me as I travel throughout Eastern Massachusetts educating police officers about thistremendously important issue, NESPIN has also dedicated resources to make our N.E C.O.P.S. website(newenglandcops.org) as well as a model Line of Duty Death policy available on their webpage so that allof their member agencies and Police Chiefs never feel alone in navigating the fallout from a Line of DutyDeath incident.

It is our intent to continue to educate all in Law enforcement about LODD policies, death benefits, andbest practices on how to handle such a tragic event. I look forward in continuing to work with NESPIN onthis very important topic as are all of our Executive Board members and Advisory board. I wish you all asafe and successful year in 2018.

Respectfully,

Mario OliveiraMario OliveiraExecutive DirectorNew England Concerns of Police Survivors
