Dear Residents

2012 has been an exciting year for nation-al events. The Olympics were fantastic and the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations brought communities together. We all took part in local events, raised money for worthwhile causes and got to know our neighbours better. However at the same time it has been a long and difficult year for many families. The economic

situation in this country has affected us all in many different ways and the Council is no exception. We are known as an ex-tremely good Council. That is because we try to do our best for our residents by ensuring that we spend our limited funds wisely and maintain our services to as high a standard as possible. We have had to adapt to meet the changing circumstances in our Borough and make savings where possible. This year we intro-duced a new recycling policy and despite a few teething prob-lems this has been running well. We have set a sensible Budget and maintained our front line services.

As local Councillors we are always available to listen and to help wherever we can through surgeries, resident association meetings and personal contact.

On behalf of myself and my fellow Councillors, Joan Spiers and Simon Parnall, I would like to wish you all an enjoyable Christ-mas and a Happy New Year.

A Meeting of the Committee took place on Tuesday, 11th Sep-tember 2012. In addition to Committee members, Councillor Ros Mill was in attendance.

Although no Police representatives had been able to attend the meeting, the Chairman reported that a new PCSO had been ap-pointed and that details were still awaited as to the location/timing of future ‘Meet the Beat’ sessions.

The Secretary reported that, following correspondence with the Surrey County Councillor (Michael Gosling), that there would be two County Councillors representing Lower Kingswood. This was as a result of the Boundary Commission’s ruling that prop-erties on the north side of Chipstead Lane would be “moved” to a different County Council division from the remainder of Low-er Kingswood.

In addition to formal matters –

Councillor Mill reported on:

The number of objections received in respect of a recent planning application and other related issues.

Possible dates for the next Councillors’ & Police Surgery and agreed with the suggestion that the Secretary should circulate suggested dates to other Councillors & Police representatives.

It was reported that the house next to the disused County Council silo site (by the Babylon Lane roundabout) had apparently been vandalised and concern was expressed as to how many other properties were lying empty in the Borough. Councillor Mill reported that the question of such Council owned land/properties was going to public consultation.

It was reported that the new recycling measures seemed to be working well in most instances. Councillor Mill stated that further recycling advice would soon be availa-ble on-line and on bins.

After the departure of Councillor Mill, a discussion took place regarding the uncertainty over the future of the Pre-School/Play Group, which had formerly been located in the Recreation Ground pavilion. It was agreed that the Chairman would speak to Councillor Spiers regarding this matter.

GET EXPLORING - discover Surrey’s countryside

Did you know that Surrey is the most wooded county in Britain? Or that the county has the most species of trees, grasses and wildflowers in England?

Surrey's countryside is beautiful during the colder months, so look out for the latest issue of Explore Surrey magazine for ideas of things to do and see, whether you're on foot, on your bike or on the water.

The council's new countryside magazine - Explore Surrey - has been designed and produced to get everyone out and about to enjoy Surrey's countryside. The first issue came out in the sum-mer and the second, in October.

Copies of the magazine are available free from your local library, council office, Tourist Information Points as well as many of Surrey’s visitor attractions. It’s also available to view or down-load from the Surrey County Council website. You can also email [email protected] or call 03456-009-009 with your thoughts.

SURREY SWITCH AND SAVE

A new scheme to help people save up to £200 a year from their ener-gy bills has been launched.

The ‘switch and save’ scheme was officially unveiled by Surrey County Council leader David Hodge at the full Council meeting held in early Decem-ber.

It comes after E.ON became the last of the major energy compa-nies to push up prices when it announced increases of nearly 9%.

Households and businesses are being urged to join Surrey’s scheme which will allow them to bulk buy their energy, enabling them to switch to cheaper gas and electricity bills.

Residents can register online now by providing contact details, the name of their supplier and details of their current energy usage and tariff. The dedicated website can be found at www.surreyswitchandsave.org or call 0800-048-8264 for those without access to the internet. Businesses can sign up from 14th January. In any event the closing date for registra-tion is 25th February 2013.

An auction with energy providers will be held at the end of Feb-ruary, with the lowest bid winning. Following the auction, people will be told of the deal and given time to decide whether to switch.

We are still looking for more vol-unteers in Smithy Lane, Green Lane and Chipstead Lane to carry out a 'speed watch' to determine the volume of speeding traffic in rush hour periods to and from the Fidelity offices. It would be hoped that this exercise would show the extent of the problem which it would be hoped would be the basis of a discussion with the office management.

If you would like to volunteer please contact me - preferably via email as below - so that I can collate the information.

Firstly, I’d like to start off by offering you some reassurance. As I’m sure you are aware, there has been a spate of bur-glaries in recent months in Lower King-swood. However, we do have teams designated to patrolling in those areas affected, and this has had a significant impact on the issue.

Also, a little reminder on how you can keep your possessions and property safe and secure.

When leaving your car:

Make sure you have locked and secured it and closed all windows.

Do not leave any items in your vehicle, no matter how insignificant you may think they are. Remember – one person’s rubbish is another person’s treasure!

Always remove your Sat Nav, including the cradle and wipe any suction marks from your window.

If possible, try and park under street lighting.

Keep your home secure:

Always lock your windows and doors.

Keep keys out of sight. If you leave them in the inside of your lock or by your door or windows, remove them and place them somewhere safe and secure.

Remove any items next to your home, which may act as a ‘step up’ to windows or ledges in to your home. For instance, dust bins, ladders and garden furniture.

Have a security light installed to the front and back of your home.

Keep back garden gates locked.

If you have gates on your driveway, keep them shut.

We regularly hold ‘Street Sur-geries’ which enables you to come and meet with us and let us know of any issues you may have. Please check the website for dates and locations: www.surrey.police.uk

I look forward to meeting with you soon.

Finally, if you see any suspi-cious activity do not hesitate to contact 101 in a non emergency or 999 in an emergency.

Kind regards

Editor’s Note

There is a new mechanism for viewing crime statistics, which can be accessed from the national police website www.police.uk/crime and this shows that, for the month of October 2012, there were a total of 22 instances of crime & anti social behaviour in Lower Kingswood. These were made up of: anti social behaviour 9, burglary 6, crimi-nal damage & arson 4, drugs 1, other theft 1 and violent crime 1. This website also allows these instances to be viewed street by street! However, comments from our local police officers have previously indicated that Lower King-swood itself continues to have relatively low levels of re-ported crime. Nevertheless you should notify Surrey Police immediately of any suspicious callers or people loitering in your area, any unfamiliar vehicles, or any suspicious activi-ty at neighbouring properties.

During this term the children have been very busy learning about a range of topics. The Year 5 and 6 children have recently had a Greek day whilst the Year 3 and 4 children had a Viking day and an outside group came into school to support the chil-dren’s historical understanding of this period. The Year 1 and 2 children have been learning about ‘Island Life’ based on the chil-dren’s books written by Katie Morag.

The whole school had an Art day with the theme being

‘Emotions’. Each class had a different artist and focus area and the end results were excel-lent. Due to its success we aim to have another event next term.

The children have voted in new school council and eco committee representatives. The school council has helped organise a fundraising event for Children In Need and the eco group ensure the school is saving energy by regularly checking that the lights, radia-tors and computers are being used efficiently. It is always so refreshing when children choose to support others less

fortunate or when our future generation want to adopt environ-mentally friendly approaches to school life.

I can’t believe that Christmas is just around the corner and the children have just started to learn their songs ready for the perfor-mances to parents!

NOEL NOEL

Dear Friends

We approach Christmas with its message of ‘Noel, noel, born is the King of Israel’ after the recent de-feat vote for women bish-ops in the Church of Eng-land’s General Synod. Alt-hough over three quarters of the General Synod, in its three houses of bishops, clergy and lay people, voted for the Measure there was not the required two-thirds majority in the House of Laity, it fell short by just six votes.

Despite this set back we must not forget that the Church stands by the scriptures which assert that: “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and fe-male, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28) We will continue to work for a church community of acceptance, forgiveness and equality, the church for which Christ died and to which he came when born as the King of Israel. Do come and join us.

I look forward to seeing you at the services and events over the Christmas period.

God bless

Well it’s been fairly quiet lately. We have been pleased to wel-come a new class recently. A Bridge Class started in September and has been well attended. All the other classes are still up and running. The Parent and Toddler Group have been concerned about the lack of attenders at this long running group. There are of course two other groups running coffee mornings now too.

The Hall has been able to work with the Council over a new gap in the hedge at back of the Hall. This has now been opened, as the Council wished us to wait until the autumn. So far feed-back has been quite positive as people will not have to tread in such mud.

Well the time is almost on us when I hand over the Hall chair to Alsion Newman and Tracey Milbourn. It’s lovely to welcome some younger faces and hope they enjoy their time looking after the Hall. I have been really pleased to have been involved for many years now, and we have tried very hard to keep the Hall as up to date as we could with, as you can guess, a limited budget. We have been very lucky with the groups who care for the Hall when using it. There have been many other events and, consid-ering their different nature, they have not experienced too many problems. I wish to thank the Hall committee for all their help and advice over these years. I should like to thank Casey Foulk-es most sincerely for her great help with the finances and her advice, when I panic!!!! Also to Marianne and Laurie Kaye for their work on bookings and the cleaning over several years. Also Ron Searle, a tower of strength to me, Alison Newman, Tracey Milbourn and Mary Bush. I wish you all well and thank you eve-ryone who has made life interesting over all these years.

For further information on booking the Hall please contact Marianne and Laurie Kaye on 01737- 832848.

Since we were able to include a report on the August stroll in the last issue of Village News and were unable to stroll in Septem-ber because of the weather, there is not a great deal to report this time.

However, in October we visited Box Hill in somewhat overcast weather and managed to complete a slightly shorter than usual stroll just in time to escape the rain. We were again glad to wel-come a new stroller on this occasion. Starting from the visitor centre we set off across Donkey Green, wondering why it was so called since none of us had ever seen donkeys on it, looping round to the viewpoint. On this particular day the visibility was mixed. From there we set off down the footpath to loop past

Labillier’s grave, which some of us had never before found, to the 19th century fort and so back to the visitor centre. We were fascinated to discover, some of us for the first time and others with memories renewed, the wide range of interesting aspects of Box Hill, from simple natural beauty and grandeur to intriguing historical curiosities.

We have no way of knowing what we will be able to attempt in the coming year, but we anticipate resuming our adventures in February, snow, wind and rain permitting. If you would like to join us in our explorations, we usually meet at 2:00pm on the 4th Monday each month.

Lower Kingswood Strollers

The Autumn session of the CAMEO Club has presented us with its usual variety, starting with the much anticipated visit of Dennis Sexton “Blowing his own 15 Trumpets”. It was a fascinating afternoon and very impressive.

CAMEO Club has had a long association with the Romanian Aid Foundation, par-ticularly through their “Joy in a Box” Christmas programme, but it has been several years since we had a visit from a representative. In October Bernard Bel-lingham visited us with detailed reports of what has been achieved and how the Foundation works. It became very clear that “Joy in a Box” is very much just one aspect of a much needed and many facet-ed work. The needs are great and the deep appreciation of the Romanian people very evident as they work in one of the

neediest parts of the country.

Needs of a very different kind were re-viewed in November as Eileen Orr visited us representing ‘Wheels for the World’, which is a branch of a Christian ministry to disabled people called ‘Through the Roof’ - the name comes from an incident in the Gospels when four friends went to the extreme of making a hole in someone’s roof in order to get their crip-pled friend to Jesus. This was a deeply challenging afternoon when we heard about how ‘Wheels for the World’ pro-vides wheelchairs to disabled people in the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Africa, countries where without them many disa-bled people are only able to get around by crawling in the dust.

The experience of recent winters, when

meetings have had to be cancelled and attendances been low due to the adverse conditions has led us to postpone resum-ing the CAMEO programme until Spring next year, which means that the first meeting in 2013 will be on 10th March.

We are seeking to put together a pro-gramme as varied and interesting as our members have come to expect and look forward to the opportunities that the new season will bring us.

If you would like further information, simply come along to a Come And Meet Each Other meeting on the second Mon-day each month (excluding January, Feb-ruary and August).

CAMEO Club - ‘Come And Meet Each Other’

I love going to Christmas parties. I love the Christmas songs, the Christmas decorations, and the Christmas spirit. I love meeting new people. When we meet new people we tend to be introduced to them either in terms of who they are related to – ‘This is Sophie, my wife’, ‘This is Frank, my neighbour’ – or in terms of what they do – ‘This is Bob, my colleague’, ‘This is Jane, my boss’. It’s exactly the same when God introduced us to his Son at the first Christmas. When God sent some angels to the shepherds outside Bethlehem after Jesus had been born, they announced: ‘Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ, the Lord’ (Luke Chapter 2 verse 11). So, who is this baby related to? He is related to great King Da-vid, from the earlier part of the Bible. He is also sent from God to be ‘the Lord’. In other words, he is the ruler. So, what has this baby come to do? He has come as a Saviour, someone who will save and deliver people from their sin. In other words, he is the rescuer. This is how God introduced us to his Son.

This introduction is something that as a church we love to think about at Christmas and we love to share with others. We are

convinced that Jesus is the ruler we all need and the rescuer we all need. In contrast to other rulers who all too often let us down or disappoint, Jesus will never do this. In contrast to other things or people we hope will rescue us in some way but inevitably fail, Jesus will never do this. Why not take the oppor-tunity this Christmas time to join us at one of our special ser-vices to think some more about this? Our carols services will take place at our church premises at 47 Smithy Lane at 10:30am on Sunday 16th and Sunday 23rd December.

You can find us on the internet at www.lkec.org.uk or you can e-mail me at [email protected].

We look forward to welcoming you!

Onwards through winter and the weather had been quite good to us. However a few weeks back we had enough rain to war-rant the building of an ark and the following week we saw the first big freeze. So for these two weeks we have had no football. Comments from parents and players about the hole this leaves in their weekends makes me realise the affect of that youth football has on the people involved and the good we do in making this happen for everyone!

I have had to tell people a lot recently that the Club is run by volunteers and that no one involved receives any remuneration for the time and effort they put into the Club. They seem sur-

prised! However this in turn made me realise how fortunate we have been to have collected together such a dedicated group of people to do this. Volunteers come and go, but we have had a core of people who have stayed with the Club for many years now and without these people it would not be possible to contin-ue. From the managers who give up their time to become F.A. trained coaches, train their teams and attend matches, to the parents who become taxis at the weekend, to the girls who run the shop in the pavilion and the mum who is now the Club Welfare Officer, each and everyone give up their time free of charge so that we can provide football for our children.

We are now nearly half way through the season and heading towards the Christmas break and the months have gone very quickly. I would like to say a huge thank you to every one of our volunteers. Can I also wish everyone reading this a very merry Christmas and a fantastic New Year.

I will finish up with the same message for new members/players. We are still looking to attract more local players to join us, par-ticularly 6 and 7 year olds. If you are interested in coming to see what we are about or you know someone who might be, then call Denis on 07900-581769 or e-mail us at [email protected].

Reigate (Lower

Kingswood) Scout Group

Things are moving on in the Scout Group. We are busy prepar-ing for Camp, Christmas and the New year with some interesting prospects ahead.!

Martin is steadily establishing his new style in the Beavers sec-tion and welcoming several new young people to the Colony. At 6 to 8 years, they are all exuberant and vocal but they seem to enjoy their weekly 1 hour meeting. In October the Colony joined about 2,500 other Beavers from across Surrey at BAZZAZ - a grand fun day that the Scout County holds every 3 years. (Surrey Scouts run a similar event for the Cub and Scout sections respectively on the intervening years). In November, our Beavers had an unusual visitor - Monty, the rescue dog. The children were told about the Blue Cross rescue operations and how to treat dogs in general. All the Beavers were able to give Monty lots of strokes.

The Cubs Scouts (aged 8 to 10½ years) have had an exceptional-ly successful autumn in Reigate district cub events - winning the district football and then the district Go Karts competition. This has helped develop a strong team pride in Lower King-swood and it was good, exciting fun doing so. Now it is time to prepare for the Autumn Camp, or more exactly Pack Holiday,

since children and adults get to sleep (I hope!!) indoors this time. The opportunity will be taken to earn more badges and make some Christmas preparations. In December the Cub Pack will be visiting a care home for the elderly and singing carols to them.

The Scout section (aged 10½ to 14) have been at a low point in the cycle of numbers but there is an exciting new prospect for the new year. Two new and experienced leaders will be joining our current leaders in January. They have been plan-ning a vibrant new programme of activities which will also in-volved our colleague scouts from Chipstead who also have a low numbers issue. By combining the expertise and resources and having more young people to make better activities viable, we hope that the Scouts will start to benefit more from all that the Scout Association can offer - and that is very considerable.

We are now in a good position to welcome any new boys or girls to join the Scout section. To find out more about us check out our group website: www.9thReigate.co.uk or contact our Group Scout Leader on 0844-414-2215 or email: [email protected]

Lower Kingswood Evangelical Church Parent and Toddler Group

We’ve been enjoying lots of fun, toys, craft, coffee and cake again as usual this term. Although the children always seem keener than the adults at this time of year, we still put ride-on trikes, slide and playhouse outside every week for those that fancy some fresh air!

There’s usually playdough and drawing to do in our Craft Area. This term we’ve also been busy weav-ing, printing, decorating cakes, painting, cutting and sticking.

The smell and taste of fresh coffee is usually ac-companied by cake, and usually one or more of us have had chance to bake something to bring and share, which we all enjoy!

At about 10:20am we all stop for Storytime. This term we’ve been hearing stories from the Bible about Moses and all the amazing things God did as he rescued his people from slavery in Egypt. While we’re all sat down together, we enjoy singing some of our favourite songs and rhymes, sometimes get-ting out some instruments too.

We’re looking forward to celebrating Christmas with stories, songs and craft as well as a bit of a party too! In the spring term, we hope to enjoy more of what we’ve all come to expect at Crumbs...

Come and join us on Friday mornings between 9:15am and 11:00am on Smithy Lane.

We have had a fantastic Autumn! Still managing to play in the garden, when its been dry & sunny. We’ve also wel-comed some lovely new Grandparents and carers to our cosy little group. There’s always room for more though! We have nearly been running a whole year and will celebrate out 1st Birthday in January 2013. It would be lovely to meet some new people. If you are new to the area and don’t know any-one, please don’t be shy, we are a really friendly lot and un-derstand what its like trying to entertain your little ones at home.

If you have a Baby, Toddler or both and would like join in the fun, please just turn up.

We open at 9:00am and finish at 11:00am.

The cost is £3 for one adult and the first child, each extra child costs 50p

All drinks & biscuits are included.

Muffins, Cakes & Bacon sandwiches from 30p - £2

Lower Kingswood Village Fête - 6th May 2013

In September it was agreed to form a "core" group to formulate the overall plan for the 2013 Fête. This group came up with sug-gestions of attractions to book and each person is making some bookings. If any readers of this newsletter have any wonderful ideas of things we could include please contact one of the group and they will be forwarded for action.

Individual groups will not have to attend six or seven meetings but just two. One will be in early February to tell the "core" group what they plan to do and one at the beginning of April for final arrangements to be made.

Don’t forget, the date for next year’s Village Fête is Monday, 6th May 2013.

Kingswood W.I. are very good at the traditional arts of the WI: cake making, jam making, growing of vegetables, flower arrang-ing and chatting!

In September, having been let down by a speaker, chatting is what we did. Most of us see friends between meetings but we chatted for England on our first meeting after the summer holi-days. The latter (the holidays that is) was interspersed by an outing to the Buddhist temple in Wimbledon – a fascinating and eye opening experience of calm, and a trip to the Dog Training Centre in Sussex (via lunch at the Cowdry Farm Shop). It is amazing what dogs can be trained to do - opening washing ma-chines, putting cards into bank machines, pulling coats on and off - very inspiring, and for the lucky recipients of a trained dog they are life savers.

The Play Reading Group were called upon at the October meeting and rose ably to the occasion with 2 plays, 2 poems and a Rhubarb song! The first play had Ann Walsh and Margaret Gardener chat-ting about “old times” and, as if by magic, every time a different decade was mentioned - Romans, flappers etc. - a character popped up, and after much discussion the 2 ladies taking tea decided life as a woman today was by far the best. The Flower Shop play was about ordinary but ex-traordinary people who come and go in the shop

to chat and tell their life histories. The Rhubarb Song was sung by Sue Smith who was ably helped by all the members tra-la ing along! In fact they were so tuneful we may form a choir. The photo below shows Judy Parfitt, Eleanor Dearn, Margaret Gar-dener, Ann Walsh and Beryl Vale in their play reading costumes, showing women in different eras – all good fun.

November brought forth elections and a new committee was formed with Margaret Gardener as president, Eleanor Dearn as secretary and Ann Newton as our treasurer – ably assisted by Elisabeth Lemon, Anita Kraashar, Ann Bonniface, Diane Som-erville and Marion Beiseigel. A big vote of thanks to Christine Leigh and the outgoing committee members.

We meet every second Wednesday of the month at the Church Hall, Bucklend Road from 2:00pm to 4:30pm. We have many extra outings, lunches once a month, craft, play reading, hand bells and much more. Do join us – it would be lovely to see you.

Hopefully by now many of you will have seen our lovely new banner which has been put up at the junction of A217/Buckland Road which we are hoping will attract new Mums and children to our group.

Lower Kingswood Parent and Toddler group has been running as a non-profit making, community based group for in excess of 20 year now, with its sole aim to give the children a couple of hours play while their parents/carers can enjoy some adult com-pany over lots of coffee and biscuits!

We are a very friendly little group running every Thursday morn-ing from 10:00am - 12:00 noon during term time. We are in the Church Hall in Buckland Road. All children from birth to school age are welcome and we only charge a nominal fee of £2 for first child and 50p for any additional children.

We have a craft table/play table each week along with many other bright and colourful toys, to name a few…. Little Tikes playhouse and kitchen, big slide with crash mats, climbing frame, ride on cars, bikes, scooters, dolls and pushchairs and a large selection of Happy Land toys, wooden castle and playhouse, dressing up clothes and a designated baby area with great selec-tion of baby toys, bouncy chairs and activity mats. And if that’s all too much, we even have a quieter corner with lots of fab books and scatter cushions!!

Please come along and meet us for plenty of chit chat, coffee and biccies! We are really hoping to build our group up in the New Year and would love to see lots of new faces.
