InKuwait, weare seeinga continued,reasonableeconomicandconsumer health.Customers ,orguestsaswe callthem,are continuingto travel.AtourotherbaseinDubaitheeconomicconditionsthere,withpeopleleaving,havemade ita littlebitmorechallenging,butthingsseemtobeimproving.There’salotofgoodnewscomingoutofDubai.Socompared
tomanyairlinemarketsIthinkthe MiddleEastisa bitofa havenofcalm.Itisnot unaffectedbutit’snotincrisiseither.
Jazeerahasannouncedplanstobe“debt-free”
byearly2010—howwillthisbeachieved?
Our founder and chairman Marwan Boodai sawmuch of the current airline turmoil coming, as the bust was fairly inevitable. What he’s put in placeis to establish a leasing company with a number of financeinstitutions,calledSahaabLeasing,andthiscompanyissteadilytakingonallofJazeera’saircraftanddeliverypositions,andwillleasetheaircraftondry operating lease back to Jazeera. So effectivelythe objective is primarily about separating theownership of the asset from the operation of theasset, and we are following a strategy that has beenvery prevalent in, for example, the hotel industry.Whenever you go to a Crowne Plaza or a Radisson,it’s those brands that are managing the hotel, butthe owners of the building are perhaps a propertycompany. So the advantage to the airline is that
