Iskandar Malaysia: Actions For A Low Carbon Future

Integrated Green Transportation – MobilityManagement System

Iskandar Malaysia MobilityManagement System (MMS) promotessustainable transport and manages thedemand for car use by changingtravelers’ attitudes and behaviour.

MMS coordinates information, servicesand activities to optimise theeffectiveness of urban transportation.

Innovative approach in managing anddelivering coordinated transportationservices to customers, including theelderly, people with different abilitiesand low income population.

The use of E-Vehicles (recentlyintroduced in IM) is also a good move.

2. Green Economy Guidelines

Green Economy Guidelines provide acomprehensive guidance manual for the9 sector pillars being promoted inIskandar Malaysia.

GEG provides a way on how companies, businesses and the public can go greenby adopting green practices in theirbusiness operations, how their factory isrun, freight transportation, services andprocurements.

GEG will help transform IskandarMalaysia into a low carbon greengrowth economy and region.

Public Version of the GEG will be available onIM’s website by end Feb 2015.

3. Eco life Challenge Programmes

198 primary schools inIskandar Malaysia:

For ELC, a bookletcompetition, 23 primaryschools got involved on 2013;and 80 schools got involved in2014. The wining schoolsvisited Kyoto City, Japan.

he remaining 95 will competein 2015.

The Iskandar Malaysia Eco-Life ChallengeProject focuses on energy householdaccounting. School children track the energyconsumption, waste generation andmanagement, travelling choices, frugalconsumption and utilizing renewable energyresources (sunlight). AIM: to raise children’sawareness level on low carbon aspects.

5.Trees for Urban Parks/Forests

The aim is to retain as well asreintroduce endemic tree species inurban parks and forests in the IskandarMalaysia region, in order toensure continuing existence of suchparks.

It is felt that many parks and urbantrees are lost through road and otherdevelopments, the re-use of previouslyzoned areas as green spaces onresidential developments, and theemergence of non-endemic species inour parks which are essentiallyornamental

9. Low Carbon Village Felda Taib Andak

.The programme was startedby UTM in 2012, togetherwith IRDA and Japan agencies.

Using LCSBPIM 2025 as theplatform, the Felda TaibAndak community formulated“A Dozen Actions” documentfor their area to achieve theircombined vision of creating avillage that is low carbon.

FTA will become a model LowCarbon village in Malaysia.

10. Smart City – Nafas Baru Pasir Gudang: GREEN ANDHEALTHY CITY

.Green Industry:To establish framework in addressing gapsbetween what's in for industry and currentavailable programmes/initiatives by variousagencies.Green Community Programme:This programme aims to promote greencommunity and green lifestyle amongresidents of Pasir Gudang.Integrated Solid Waste Management (Wasteto Energy):To ensure that all operation and maintenanceof sewerage system in the area is under thesupervision of MPPG. Application element"Waste to Energy" on solid wastemanagement and sewerage managementCarbon Sequestration of Tree PreservationOrder (TPO):This programme will identify the carbon sinkand the tree value.

Why pursue Smart City Concept? The Smart City Framework and the Low Carbon Society Blueprint are IM’sStrategic Environmental Policy.

• Environment Sustainability;

• Pursuing Green Economic Growth throughenablers of Investment, Jobs, Innovationthrough ICT as an enabler; and

• Provide quality of life to the people on PublicSafety, Education, Social Care and Wealth-sharing.

While many still focus on the role ofICT infrastructure, Iskandar Malaysiahas paid particular attention to 6fundamental elements of the SmartCity Concept as important drivers ofurban growth in an economic region:

1) Smart Economy2) Smart Mobility3) Smart Environment4) Smart People5) Smart Living6) Smart Governance
