Welcome to Worship Today

Paul’s letter to the Romans will be the focus of our sermons until Advent.

We have taken “Faithful, Flourishing: God, Church, Creation” as our theme. God has been faithful to all his promises, promises that spoke to the destruction of sin and the renewal of all things. God is being faithful to the promise and we wait in hope.

Paul tells us that the resurrection event of Jesus–his death and resurrection–is a past event with ongoing results. This event changed the world. Creation and all within it could once more flourish in the way God intended for them to flourish when he created them. This event of the resurrection promises the renewal of all things beginning now.

We hope and trust that we have and will continue to experience the grace of God in our lives as we are challenged by the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the words of Paul’s letter to the Romans.

When we were baptized, we left the old country of sin behind and became citizens of God’s new country of grace. Through baptism, God brought us into God’s light-filled world, where we are dead to sin and alive to God. Now we’re living in God’s freedom. God gave us life—resurrection life. We’re free to love God completely, to experience life on God’s terms of freedom and grace, to become fully naturalized citizens of God’s kingdom of love and justice.

Our old way of life—chained to the dead-end tyranny of sin—was nailed to the Cross with Christ. Sin can no longer tell us what to do. We are free now to throw ourselves wholeheartedly into goodness and justice—God’s way of doing things.But the sad truth is, we don’t. Not always. We truly delight in God’s commands, but parts of us secretly rebel. The moment we decide to do good, sin steps in to trip us up. We want to serve God with all our hearts and minds, but so often sin’s powerful influence pulls us away from the good we want to do. Is there any help for us?Yes, thank God! Jesus Christ himself acted to set things right in this life of contradictions. Just as Jesus’ death eliminated sin’s power over us, Jesus’ resurrection brings us life and delivers us from sin and death. When we welcome the Spirit of Jesus Christ into our lives, when God dwells in us, God leads us out into the open, into a spacious, free life. We just need to give the old life a decent burial and get on with our new resurrection lives.

We’re eager to step with God into this new resurrection life, the life that God always intended his children to live. Thanks be to God!

After that discussion on love we will have the opportunity to put love into practice by building care packages for our college students.

College Care PackagesOnce again we have the privilege to remember the undergraduate college students that we may not see very often. We do this by sending them care packages–no matter where they find themselves. The care packages are full of small items that they need, some baked goods, maybe a fun item, snacks and a note of encouragement from AACRC. We will be assembling the care packages on October 19th as a natural outgrowth to the “Life of the Vine” discussion about the fruit of the Spirit of love, led by Tim Dekker.

Building a community loved and changed by Jesus, loving and changing the world for him

Council, with the Missions Team, has chosen “mission” as a focus area for 2016-17.

What is our church’s missional identity? Committed to being a community of people

deeply loved and changed by God, we are challenged to mirror the deep welcome that

Jesus demonstrates. Called to be a healing presence, how are we loving and changing

the world? What are we are dreaming and what can we do? How might we continue to grow as an intentional, missionally collaborative community that embraces others and

extends God’s kingdom into the world?

Our conversation on mission will emerge as the year progresses. At the town hall

meeting on October 23 (3:00-4:30 pm, child care available), we want to engage with friends and members around the reflection questions below.

What passions or gifts are you using or hoping to use to serve the world in mission?

How are these passions or gifts connected to the church and the community outside the church?

How do you understand the church’s mission and your involvement in that mission?

We’ll have a brief introduction and then spend the rest of the town hall listening as you

discuss each of these questions. Please prayerfully consider your answers in the

coming week. Then, there will be an opportunity to continue to talk while enjoying ice

cream and apple pie. If you are unable to attend, you can email your thoughts to

[email protected] or place them in mailbox #84.

Our prayer

Dear God, Open our eyes to see where Jesus’ healing love is needed in our world. Open our ears to hear what you are saying to us today. Open our hands to do your work and to help where help is needed. Open our lips to speak words of comfort, joy, and laughter to one another. Open our minds to accept new truths about how you are present in our lives and in our world. Open our hearts to love you, to love our neighbors, and to love ourselves as you have loved us. Amen.
