  • INSTRUCTIONS (Single bed quilt) All seam allowances are ¼”.

APPLIQUÉUse your favourite method to appliqué the hearts and leaves. If you are using the turned-under-edge method you will need to cut each shape with an allowance of just less than ¼” all round. If you are fusing the shapes down you will need to trace the shapes out on the paper side of the fusible without an allowance, iron to the wrong side of the relevant fabrics according to the manufacturer’s instructions and then cut out the fabric shapes.

I chose to embellish the hearts in the heart blocks by adding a small rickrack trim under the edge of the hearts. I first turned under the edge of the hearts and ironed the folds crisply. Then I glued the rickrack in place before stitching the hearts in place. You could also use a narrow lace. This is optional.

HEART BLOCKS (4 in total)1. For each block sew one each of the cream Mini Hearts, Dimples, Manuscript and Damask 7” squares together to form the pieced background. Mark a 12” square with a wash-away marker using the intersection of the squares as the centre point. This is the area in which to place your appliqué. If there is any shrinkage after appliquéing your hearts then you have an allowance for this.

    2. Place your template A hearts in a circle, using two of each of the four fabrics in each block. Appliqué by hand or machine according to your chosen method.

    3. Now trim the background to 12½” x 12½”.

PILLOW BLOCK (1 in total)1. Sew the two 9” x 7¾” blocks together then sew the two 9” blocks on either side. This piece should measure 9” x 32”. Mark an 8” x 29” area with a wash-away marker along the width of this piece centred on the middle seam. This is the area in which to place your appliqué.

    2. Rickrack or ribbon: Cut nine 5” lengths of rickrack or ribbon for the stems in the pillow block. Turn under one end carefully. Start in the centre of the block and then place the stems evenly on either side with the turned-under ends ½” up from the bottom marked line. Fabric stems: If you are turning under the edges of your appliqué, then turn under the two long sides and one short side on each piece and pin in place as directed for rickrack above. If you are fusing the stems, trace 9 stem templates on the paper side of the fusible web, iron to the wrong side of the red fabric, cut out and place on the background.

    3. Pin the hearts and leaves in place. Appliqué by hand or machine according to your chosen method.

    4. Now trim the background to 8½” x 29½”.

FRAMES (red Mini Hearts)1. Cut eight 12½” lengths and sew to the top and bottom of each of the four heart blocks.

    2. Cut eight 14½” lengths and sew to the sides of each of the four heart blocks.

    3. Cut two 29½” lengths and sew to the top and bottom of the pillow block.

    4. Cut two 10½” lengths and sew to the sides of the pillow block.

FIRST BORDER (cream Heart Scroll)1. Cut two 14½” lengths and sew a heart block to the left and right of each of these lengths.

    2. Cut five 31½” lengths. Sew a length to the top and bottom of the pillow block.

    3. Sew two 31½” lengths to the top and bottom of a heart block unit from Step 1. Sew the last 31½” length to the bottom of the other heart block unit.

    4. Sew the two units from Step 3 together as shown in the photograph.

  • 5. Cut two 37½” lengths and sew them to the sides of the heart block unit.

    6. Cut two 16½” lengths and sew them to the sides of the pillow block unit.

SECOND BORDER (red Mini Hearts)1. Cut four 37½” lengths. Sew two to the top and bottom of the pillow block unit and two to the top and bottom of the Heart block unit.

    2. Cut two 39½” lengths and sew to the sides of the heart block unit.

    3. Cut two 18½” lengths and sew to the sides of the pillow block unit.

THIRD BORDER (labels)Cut out the label borders very carefully by cutting exactly down the middle between the rows.1. Cut three border lengths that contain ten labels and measure 39½”.

    2. Sew one to the top and bottom of the pillow block unit and one to the bottom of the heart block unit.

    3. Sew the pillow block unit and the heart block unit together.

    4. Join the remaining label borders together in pairs. Cut two lengths each 67⁵⁄₈” long.

    5. Sew these to the sides of the quilt top.

FOURTH BORDER (red Mini Hearts)1. Take the remaining six strips of red mini heart fabric and join them into one long strip.

    2. Cut two lengths 46¼” and sew them to the top and bottom of the quilt top.

    3. Cut two lengths 69⁵⁄₈” long and sew them to the sides of the quilt top.

OUTER BORDER (red Love Song Collage)1. Take the seven 6½” wide strips.

    2. Sew three of them together into one long strip and from this length cut two pieces each 48¼” long. Sew these to the top and bottom of the quilt top.

    3. Sew the remaining four strips together in pairs. From these strips cut two pieces each 81⁵⁄₈” long. Sew these to the sides of the quilt top.

FINISHING THE QUILT1. Give the quilt top a thorough but careful pressing making sure that the seams are all lying flat.

    2. Sandwich the quilt top with a layer of batting and a backing piece that are at least two inches bigger all round than the quilt top. Baste together by hand, with pins, basting tacks or basting spray.

    3. Quilt by machine or by hand.

    4. Trim the excess batting and backing back to the edge of the quilt top.

    5. Sew the binding strips together into one long strip and bind the edges of the quilt.

    6. Add any embellishment you may choose to personalize your quilt.

    7. Don’t forget to label your quilt with all the relevant details.
