Jay Ryder makes a special appearence at an excluive party last night and treated the

audience with three songs from his smashing debut album

Jay Ryder is about to start work on his debut album. It is promised that the album will feature his no.1 track ‘Straight Up’ and a few more oth-ers. If all goes well with the album, it is expected that he will be the youngest ever double plati -num album seller. At only 17, Jay Ryder clearly has lots of ti me to way up his opti on. Our report-er, Timothy Burns was very excited to carry out this interview with him. So we got him relaxed and ready to tackle the questi ons that we have for him.

When did you start your obsession with music?[Laughs] Well I wouldn’t say it is an obsession but it’s defi nitely a hobby, well it started off as a hobby, something I liked doing in my spare ti me when i was about 13, 14 ish. I was sti ll young so i was energeti c and I was ready for any challenge. So it began as a hobby.Who inspired you?Well, it’s a number of people. 50, Eminem, Snoop Dogg and all that but i guess it was mainly one person who inspired me the most, Lil Wayne. He is just so unique his voice it’s diff erent to everyone else’s to make it his own style and the rhymes he comes out with are just unbelievable. He truly is a genius. How old where you when you started recording properly?I was about 15. I had writt en down some lyrics and i got a beat. So then my friend encouraged me to go to a studio and record it so i did and next thing you know i was doing it more oft en.What makes you diff erent from other arti st?I am very relaxed and I enjoy writi ng my lyr-ics and my songs, whereas other arti st perhaps treat it as a job, I simply do it for my own enter-tainment but if people like it then I am not going to stop them from listening to my music.Where were you born?I was born in Harare, Zimbabwe. It’s an African country. My parents are both from there and to be honest I think it was a great place, I enjoyed my ti me there. I was sad to leave but I suppose at this stage I really can’t complain [Laughs]Is there any major diff erence between here and Zimbabwe?Yes. There is a lot that is diff erent. In England there are more rules and restricti ons but in Zim, there is more freedom.

Which arti st would you want to record with? All of them to be honest, but it is always going to mainly be Lil Wayne because he is and will always be special to me. I know it sounds funny but I prob-ably wouldn’t be where I am without his inspirati on. I know he probably isn’t the best role model, yeah he smokes and all that but no one is perfect.

What did you want to be originally?I wanted to be a boxer mainly but the training was always hard for me and I struggled because of my asthma especially in the winter season but music always calmed me down and moti vated me to do things that maybe I didn’t think I could do.
