Love Wales’ Water

We drink it, flush it, play in it, swim in it, fish in it and plants and wildlife live in it.

Natural Resources Wales is responsible for implementing the Water Framework Directive in Wales.

The 3 key principles of the Water Framework Directive are:

Protect prevent deteroriation

Restoreaim to achieve ‘good or better’ status

Promotevalue of the water environment

2,736km rivers meet good or better status

Equal to almost 5 round trips from Bangor to Cardi

Progress in cycle 1

Cardiff

x5

3.7 2km of lakes are ingood or better status

Equal to over 450 football pitches

More than1,000 investigations undertaken

81% of measures to

improve status identiiedin 2009

completed

Over three years, partnership projects delivered £4.4million worth of improvements that contributed to:

600 farm assessments

533 fish easements

13 fish passes

74 habitat restoration schemes

71km of fencing

850soft bank revetment

554.7 km improved access for fish

children learnt about river habitats

1244km2 of estuarineor coastal waters isin good or better status

All our activities place pressure on our water environment.

The top 5 issues are:

Physical modifications e.g. weirs, culverts

Historical mining activities e.g. metals

Rural pollution e.g. sediment and nutrients from agriculture

Point source pollution e.g. phosphatefrom waste water treatment works

Pollution from towns, cities and transport e.g. chemicals from urban and transport environments

How we are tackling these issuesThe plans set out actions to tackle these issues. A list of national and local measures can be found on Water Watch Wales

Turning the River Basin Management plans into action by 2021We are aiming for 5% of water bodies to meet good status. We will work with the Liaison Panels, partners and organisations to develop a delivery plan. These groups are absolutely key to the success of the delivery of improvements as we cannot do it alone.
