From Rosemary TwilleyDear Guests,
Seven years ago, the Kent County Fund for the Arts was established in memory of my late husband, Josh Twilley. Josh found solace in the arts to help him cope with the physical and mental anguish of a terminal illness. A self taught artist, he painted scenes from our travels, flowers in our gardens, or works from the masters. Later, I felt it appropriate to combine his passion for the community and the arts by creating the Kent County Fund for the Arts in partnership with CenDel Foundatoin. The Fund has grown and so has the amount of the grants; we have distributed more than $50,000 to various non-profit art organizations.
The 2014 arts award recipients are listed in the Schwartz lobby, and at the reception in the McNinch Lounge before the performance. The Wesley College women’s a cappella group will be singing throughout the Schwartz, and the Children’s Theater will be performing a preview of their next performance on stage prior to the play.
Please join us at the reception in the McNinch Lounge following the play to congratulate the Governor and First Lady for their theatrical performance, and to thank them for coming to Kent County to share with us their passion and love of the arts.
Thank you for coming this evening to help us celebrate, and please continue your support.
Enjoy the evening!
- Rosemary Twilley

From Tatiana Copeland
Dear Guests,
I am so pleased to join with you in promoting the arts in Kent County through support for the Kent County Fund for the Arts. I would like to dedicate my participation in tonight’s event to the two “fi rst ladies” of Delaware, the First Lady of our state, Carla Markel and the First Lady of Kent County, Rosemary Twilley.
I believe the inspiration of a painting, the exhilaration of a symphonic work, and the message of a play moves us, shapes us and challenges us.
The arts are an anchor to our community in so many ways: contributing to economic vitality, strengthening our children’s educational experiences, and preserving and promoting our cultural heritage. That’s why I am so deeply committed to encouraging a thriving arts community.
Thank you to the sponsors, supporters and guests of tonight’s performance of LOVE LETTERS. And, thank you to Jack and Carla Markell for their devotion to the arts, helping to raise money to foster arts organizations across our beautiful state.
- Tatiana Copeland

We are a Community of CollaboratorsThank you to our friends from the Schwartz Center for the Arts, Wesley College & Delaware State University.
The Schwartz Center for the Arts was originally constructed in 1904 and known as The Dover Opera House. George M. Schwartz expanded it into a movie theater in 1923 and tabbed it The Capital Theater.
For years, the Theatre fl ourished but in the 1970s fell into a state of disrepair and in 1982, the doors were closed. After an intensive statewide fundraising campaign, The Friends of the Capitol Theater raised enough money to develop an extensive modernization and expansion. The beautiful $8.5 million facility reopened in October, 2001, dubbed the Schwartz Center for the Arts.
In 2004, a strategic alliance was formed to collaborate the resources of Wesley College, Delaware State University, and The Friends of the Capitol Theater, to maximize usage and position the historic treasure as the premiere performing arts center in Central Delaware. In January, 2007, the relationship was formalized with the three becoming partners in the operation, management and programming of the Center.

A Letter to Carla and JackDear Carla and Jack,
Almost a year has passed since you suggested to me the possibility of performing “LOVE LETTERS” in Kent County in support of the Kent County Fund for the Arts. Excited that you would take your time and energy to commit to such a project, I found a wonderful hard working crew of 12 to put the art celebration together. Your willingness to come to Kent County to share with us your passion and love for the arts inspired us to meet every two weeks for months to plan. We did not have a paid employee, or marketing director. But we shared your enthusiasm.
Thank you for reminding us that art enhances the quality of life for ourselves and for our children, educates and broadens our perspective, and impacts our cultural and community development. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to have a celebration of the arts in Kent County. And on behalf of the presenting and performing artists in Kent County and all of us who have a passion for the arts, thank you for your generous support to the Kent County Fund for the Arts.
From one art patron to another,
Rosemary

The MarkellsCarla and Jack Markell were both born and raised in Newark, Delaware. They were born exactly one month apart in 1960 at Delaware Memorial Hospital and shared the same pediatrician, Dr. Levitzky. They attended kindergarten and Newark High School, graduating together in 1978. When Carla’s mom heard Jack speak at their high school graduation, she told Carla that he was that kind of man Carla should marry. Carla laughed.
They worked together at Friendly’s Ice Cream in Newark throughout high school and after their first year of college. He put extra whip cream and nuts on sundaes she served her customers.
They reconnected in 1988 during the planning of their 10 year high school reunion. A friend noticed Carla was missing from the invitation list and mentioned it to her. Jack was the contact on the planning committee, so Carla sent him a letter. The letter opened the door to the rekindling of a life long relationship and ultimately, marriage, in June of 1990. So, just as in the play tonight, a “love letter” was central to the Markell’s relationship.
Carla is a graduate of the University of Delaware and has worked in a variety of human resources related roles. As First Lady of Delaware, she has
promoted volunteerism, mentored and has been an advocate for youth.
Jack is a graduate of Brown University and the University of Chicago. He was Senior Vice President and the 13th employee at Nextel Communications, Inc., Vice President of Comcast and an associate at McKinsey and Company, Inc. He was elected State Treasurer three times and Governor in 2008 and 2012.
The Markells have two children, Molly 21 and Michael, 19 and a very jumpy dog name Rue who will turn 3 years old in December.

Providing a lasting source of charitable funding to
benefi t Central Delaware
The CenDel Foundation has been established for two main reasons:
To provide a vehicle for charitable giving to the community: Anyone can be a philanthropist through a gift, large or small, to the CenDel Foundation.
To work for the betterment of Central Delaware and its residents: Funds from the CenDel Foundation will be directed to meet critical needs of the area and its residents. The funds are fl exible, able to direct grant making to new issues or opportunities as they arise. The one constant is that the funds generated by the CenDel Foundation will stay in Central Delaware.
The CenDel Foundation also helps establish charitable funds for individuals, families, businesses and organizations, and distributes income from the funds as grants to nonprofi t entities throughout Central Delaware.

Arts Enrich LivesEveryone benefi ts when art is a central part of our community. Whether you are being entertained, educated, enriched or performing yourself, there is a place for art in all of our lives. Kent County is fortunate to have a wide range of performing and presenting artists in our midst, including painters, sculptors, musicians, actors, photographers and composers who make our region a better place to live. We also enjoy a rich assortment of museums, exhibit halls, studios, galleries and performing art centers — each of which contributes to our local economies and deserves our support.
How the Art Fund Works
KCFA is an endowment that awards grants to organizations who provide arts opportunities in Kent County. The Fund accepts tax-deductible donations from individuals and businesses who share its mission. Started with a generous matching gift from local philanthropist Rosemary Twilley, our immediate objective is to raise $250,000 more to build the endowment to $500,000. Recipients of the Fund are regional non-profi t art groups that enhance our quality of life, educate and broaden our perspectives and help improve community relations and economic well-being in Kent County.
How to Support the FundThe Kent County Fund for the Arts provides a great way to support a wide range of quality arts organizations with one gift. Gifts to the fund are fully tax-deductible. All donors will be recognized in our annual report.
