During Jeremiah’s earthly ministry he allowed himself to become distracted and weary as he observed what appeared to be prosperous blessings befalling the most wicked people of his time. In the context of our verse we understand what God is saying to His prophet; weariness leads to feebleness. Galatians 6:9 “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” God indicated that if Jeremiah found his present circumstances difficult his future challenges would even be more difficult. There’s an important lesson to be learned from God’s word to Jeremiah; there's no growth without challenge and there's no challenge without change. As we get older, many of us resist change forgetting that without the challenge of change we’re in danger of deteriorating physically, mentally, and spiritually. God wanted Jeremiah to grow in his faith as He also wants us to grow. Gilbert K. Chesterton put it this way, “The fatal metaphor of progress, which means leaving things behind us, has utterly obscured the real idea of growth, which means leaving things inside us." God was more concerned about the spiritual development within His prophet, so He used the difficulties that he faced to strengthen his faith. God could handle the wickedness of the people in Judah, but God couldn't force His servant to grow. Only Jeremiah could make that choice by staying in the race, accepting new challenges, and thereby maturing in the Lord. Proverbs 3:5 “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil.” Our lives are primarily made up of long stretches of uneventful days and then, generally without warning, we find ourselves in the midst of a mighty storm. Our Lord’s reference to the swelling of the Jordan is a warning of extreme danger. The overflowing of Jordan, which generally happened during the harvest time, drove the lions and other wild beast from their coverings in the bushes along the banks of the river. Once flushed out they ran throughout the countryside wreaking havoc, slaying men, and carrying off the cattle. This thought is expressed in 1 Peter 5:8 “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” The application is if you can’t trust God in the little things you’ll never trust Him when major life changing events occur. Let’s be prepared to contend with horses. Love and prayers..... Pastor Randy J. Skeens

Endurance....

Jeremiah 12:5 If thou hast run with the footmen, and they have wearied thee, then how canst thou contend with horses? and if in the land of peace, wherein thou trustedst, they wearied thee, then how wilt thou do in the swelling of Jordan?

Psalm 23King James Version (KJV)

23 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

Page 5: Love and prayers Pastor Randy J. Skeens · what appeared to be prosperous blessings befalling the most wicked people of his time. ... Browning, Lucille Adkins, ... Kaye Runyon, Amanda

3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

The Fruit of the Spirit—The characteristics that God wants in our lives as His children are seen in the nine-fold fruit of the

Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). St. Paul began with love because all of the other fruit is really an outgrowth of love…. This divine

love is God's gift to us (Rom. 5:5), and we must cultivate and pray that it will increase (Phil. 1:9).

When a person lives in the sphere of love, then he experiences joy—that inward peace and sufficiency that is not affected by

outward circumstances. Love and joy together produce peace, "the peace of God, which passeth all understanding" (Phil. 5:7).

These first three qualities express the Godward aspect of the Christian life.

The next three characteristics express the manward aspect of the Christian life: long

suffering or patience (courageous endurance without quitting), gentleness (kindness), and

goodness (love in action). The Christian who is long suffering will not avenge himself or wish

difficulties on those who oppose him. Hi will be kind and gentle, even with the most offensive,

and will sow goodness where others sow evil. Human nature can never do this on its own; only

the Holy Spirit can.

The three final

qualities are selfward: faith

(faithfulness,

dependability); meekness

(the right use of power and

Page 7: Love and prayers Pastor Randy J. Skeens · what appeared to be prosperous blessings befalling the most wicked people of his time. ... Browning, Lucille Adkins, ... Kaye Runyon, Amanda

authority, power under control); and temperance (self-control). Meekness is not weakness. Jesus said, "I am meek and lowly in

heart" (Matt. 11:29), and Moses was "very meek" (Num. 12:3); yet no one could accuse either of them of being weak. The meek

Christian does not throw his weight around or assert himself. Just as wisdom is the right use of knowledge, so meekness is the

right use of authority and power (taken from writings by Warren Wiersbe).

Hey, come back next month and we'll take another close look at our little Tree and its need for cultivation!

Our Quiz for Bible Scholars will return in July's Newsletter.
