Accentuate the Positive/Show Your DKG Pride

Martha Turner, 2nd

Vice President and State Membership Chairman

What can chapters do to become more successful and appreciate the importance of their

members? Accentuate the Positive:

Provide orientations that focus on the opportunities of the Society;

Provide regular mini-reorientations to remind members of the Seven Purposes and

the opportunities of the Society;

Give reasons why every member is important to the chapter;

Share with local communities the projects and programs occurring at chapter,

state, and international levels;

Support early-career educators in schools and districts;

Invite prospects to chapter meetings;

Contact former members and invite them to reinstate.

Now is the time to start looking for prospective members; it is also a perfect time to

examine your chapter’s membership diversity. Something to think about…does your

chapter have an ―action plan‖ for attracting, reinstating, and maintaining members?

Don’t forget to ―Toot your horn,‖ ―Put it in the newspaper,‖ ―Spread the word‖ about what

your chapter is doing to impact education and Show Your Pride in an organization that

Supports excellence in education through projects at the local, state, and

international levels;

Supports members with scholarships, professional development awards;

Builds leadership confidence and skills through professional learning at the local,

state, and international levels;

Provides that professional networking with key women educators.

International Committee Structure, presenter at several regional conferences and

international conventions, and most recently as chairman of the International

Communications Committee where she was actively engaged in "creating a buzz"

by challenging members to increase visibility and advance the Society. Beverly

Buzzing with the Queen Bee… Cindy Ruel, State President

Oh I want to be in that number when Delta Kappa Gamma comes marching in!!!

That’s right. Don’t be late. Fill out your registration form right now for the 2011

State Convention. While you’re at it, get a friend or two to register with you. The more the merrier! New

Orleans and the Kenner Airport Hilton are waiting to show you a great time. Now stop and read over the

workshop selections. Where else could you gain so much knowledge under one roof? This year, Dr. Beverly

Helms is our Society guest. Dr. Helms will create quite a buzz as she visits with us and brings us greetings from

International. We will also vote on our new State officers and witness their installation. There’s business to take

care of at the General Sessions and friendships to renew and new friends to meet. So what are you waiting for?

Get up off the couch; pick up a pen, and register now. The fun is waiting! "Laissez les bons temps rouler!

...in New Orleans with Epsilon State!

Recording the Buzz around Epsilon State…

Pam Bond, Recording Secretary

It was so exciting to ―BUZZ‖ across Epsilon State and ―BEE‖ a part of all six district meetings! I extend

my congratulations to each hostess chapter for a job well done and much appreciation for the hard work that was

evident as we enjoyed your hospitality. I enjoyed seeing my dear friends from years past and getting acquainted

with new friends. I applaud each and every member across Epsilon State who attended one of the six meetings.

Our dedication to the integrity and strength of our Society was rewarded with much enjoyable fellowship,

informative reports and workshops and delicious food.

I encourage you to buzz around your community, continuing to extend your warm hospitality as you invite

prospective members to regular chapter meetings and special events. Remember, voting at the 2010 International

convention changed our membership criteria. Remember, step outside the usual ―HIVE‖ when looking for

excellence. Our LSU Extension Office Agent has been a member of Alpha Upsilon for several years. A portion

of her salary is paid by our parish school board for her instruction in our schools.

―BEE‖ sure your Key Chapter form is a work-in-progress. Many chapters have already been working so

their form is ready on time. Do not wait to the last minute and hit the panic button!

Offer to help your chapter gather documentation (news articles, newsletters, pictures, information from

events/projects, etc.) needed to verify points for the form. Ask a couple of other members to help you ―BEE‖

hostesses of a soup and sandwich get-together for members who are finalizing form for submission.

The form, along with original news items, may be sent ―snail-mail‖ with legible postmark on or before

the February 1, 2011 deadline. It may be sent by e-mail with the same deadline date applicable but the original

news items must be mailed through US mail with the same legible postmark and must be identified with your

chapter name.

I will ―BEE‖ looking for each of you at the 2011 Epsilon State Convention in New Orleans, March 25-27!

Happy Holidays!

“On the Road Again” for the Fall Tour of 2010 District Meetings Jean Patterson, Past State President, Mu Chapter

Beginning Oct 2 and ending on November 6 the Epsilon State Officers had a busy six weeks. At all the meetings the

officers and committee members presented reports and gave important information about deadlines and opportunities

available to members.

Congratulations to the six district directors and the hostess chapters for a job well done! The Friday night dinners

with members from the hostess chapter were a highlight of the district meetings journeys. Of course, there was

always a little shopping done.

Northwest District in Shreveport kicked off the first stop on the tour on October 2. With a theme ―Bee’ing on Top‖

the members enjoyed hearing about the service projects being carried out by the northwest chapters.

October 9 found the travelers on the way to the Southwest and New Iberia. Over 100 members gathered for the

district meeting with a theme of ―Sugar and Spice, We Have Everything Nice.‖ Many interesting workshops were

presented such as Stress Less With Yoga and Promethian Board Basics. This district had the most in attendance with

over 100 sisters!

West Monroe in the Northwest was the place to travel October 16. An appropriate theme was ―On the Road: A

Journey Toward Vision and Action.‖ Dr. Lori Myers, district director, presented an informative workshop entitled,

―Which Direction Are You Headed,‖ Use the MAPP to Achieve Chapter Excellence.

October 23, Southeast and Baton Rouge was the place with Alpha Xi hosting a wonderful ―tailgate party‖ complete

with LSU tote bags made by members of the host chapter. Their theme was ―MAPP: Achieving Chapter Excellence

with Mentoring, Active Engagement, Procedures, and Program of Work. Chapters can use this information to help

engage their chapter members.

The day before Halloween found Central district members in Jena for a great meeting with the theme ―Delta Kappa

Gamma is the Place to BEE‖. Members were surprised to find that Huey P. Long was to be the guest speaker for one

of the workshops. It was great! Ask Pam Bond what part she played.

The last stop on the tour was South to Thibodaux on November 6, the home district of State President, Cindy Ruel.

―You Can Bee a Star With Delta Kappa Gamma‖ was the theme as Epsilon state sisters met to enjoy a program

planned by Linda Peirce and the Kappa chapter ladies.

[3] Which, if adopted would read: Stale Checks – any outstanding check over a year old are stale and shall be

considered a donation to Epsilon State with the check’s amount being returned to the account from which it

Article XI. D

[1] Which now reads: None

[2] Be amended by striking out and/or inserting new words or phraseology as follows: D. Order of the Magnolia

At the Epsilon State Convention following the completion of each biennium, the outgoing Epsilon State

President should be inducted into the Order of the Magnolias by the immediate past state president. The Order

of the Magnolia will serve as an advisory group to the current Epsilon State President at her discretion. These

ladies will also serve in liaison positions assigned by the Epsilon State President as needs arise.

Current letters D would become E, E would become F, F would become G, G would become H, and H would

become I.

[3] Which, if adopted would read D.

Current letters D would become E, E would become F, F would become G, G would become H, and H would

become I.

Rationale: In 2009, the current Epsilon State President, Cindy Ruel requested that a special elite group be

formed of past Epsilon State Presidents. This group, known as the Order of the Magnolias, shall serve as an

advisory group to the current Epsilon State President at her discretion.

Nominations Committee Presents Slate for 2011-2013 Officers

Donna Kimball-Lerma, Chairman

The Committee on Nominations met in Baton Rouge on November 13, 2010. After carefully considering all

Recommendations for each office, the committee is pleased to present the following nominations for Epsilon

State Offices: President, Donnis Poe (Beta Sigma, Central); First Vice-President, Martha Turner (Alpha Rho,

Northwest); Second Vice-President, Pam Bond (Alpha Upsilon, Central); Recording Secretary, Kathye

Blackburn (Alpha Rho, Northwest).

Donnis Poe has been an active member of Beta Sigma since her initiation in 1999.

She has served her chapter as the Membership Committee Chairman, a member

of the Scholarship committee, First Vice-President, and President. At the state

level, Donnis attended the 2003 Bea Davis Leadership Seminar, served as the

Second Vice-President, and is presently the Central District Director. She

coordinated the 2009 Central District Meeting, co-chaired the 2007 Epsilon State

Convention, and has presented numerous workshops at the district and state

levels. Donnis is a 2010 Golden Gift Seminar recipient. Her Fall 2010 Bulletin

article, ―Creating a Delta Kappa Gamma Resume and Portfolio‖ mirrored the

presentation she delivered at the 2010 Delta Kappa Gamma International

Convention in Spokane. Her development of a Delta Kappa Gamma resume and

portfolio has created a trend for members to compile information specific to the

society involvement. Donnis is a 1977 graduate of Hicks High School and in

received a BS Degree in Business Education from Northwestern State University, and a Master of Public

Administration from Bellevue University. She has had experience in banking, secretarial positions at Louisiana

System. Donnis attends East Leesville Baptist Church, and enjoys Delta Kappa Gamma, reading, cooking, and

working with the Helping Hands Storefront Ministries.

Martha Turner has been a member of Alpha Rho chapter since 1995. During that

time, she served as 2nd Vice-President, twice as President, Membership

Chairman, Professional Affairs Committee member, and is still the Finance

Committee Chairman for Alpha Rho. She held several positions on the Bossier-

Caddo Coordinating Council and was the 2002 Northwest District Meeting

Chairman. On the state level, she is presently Epsilon’s 2nd Vice-President, co-

chaired the 2010 State Convention, has been a member of and chaired the Finance

Committee for the last two bienniums, Parliamentary Advisor, and was a 2005

Bea Davis participant and instructor in 2007. Martha was also a 2008 Golden

Gift Seminar recipient, sang with the Golden Gift Class and was selected to

represent the Golden Gift Class in Chicago. She has presented workshops at the

district, state, regional, and international meetings, and has written, directed, sang,

danced, and performed skits. Martha is a 1973 Mansfield High graduate, and has

a B.S. Degree in Health, Physical and Safety Education, and Mathematics from

LA Tech University. She holds a M.Ed in Administration and Supervision from McNeese State. She also has a

Masters +30. Martha has been the Assistant Principal at Haughton High School since 1998. Her special

regional level, Pam served on the Steering Committee for the 2007 SE Regional

Conference and served as Epsilon State’s member on the 2007-2010 International

Corresponding Secretary and created a newsletter that received state recognition.

As chapter President, she instituted the Chapter Grant in Aid for First Year

Teachers and a Reception for Outstanding Women Educators in the Bossier Parish

Bea Davis Seminar, served as the 2007- 2009 Northwest District Director, and
