Birth

• Gregor was born on 1822 and lived until his death in 1884.

• He was born in Heinzendorf bei Odrau, Austrian Empire.

Page 5: Louis Pasteur

Genetics

• Gregor’s field of study is Genetics.• His major accomplishment was finding

“Mendel’s Laws of Inheritance.”-statements about the way certain characteristics are transmitted from one generation to another in an organism.

Page 6: Louis Pasteur

Legacy

• Inheritance laws published postmortem.• Gregor was often referred to as the

“Father of Modern Genetics.”

Page 7: Louis Pasteur

Interesting Facts

• Gregor used around 29,000 pea plants during his research.

• His work wasn’t appreciated until 35 years after his death.

• He never got to see the importance of his work.

          Aldo Leopold1887-1948

From Burlington, Iowa

• Conservationist,educator, and writer

• Went to Yale University • Wrote books about the

environmento A Sand Country Almanac o The Land Ethic

Page 10: Louis Pasteur

More about Leopold... • He passed away while trying

to extinguish a fire in his neighbor's lawn.

•  A Sand Country Almanac sold two million copies and was translated into nine different languages.

• In Wisconsin, he and his family helped restore its natural beauty by planting thousands of pine trees.

• Hooke lived from July 18th 1635 to March 3rd 1703

• He was born in Freshwater, Isle of Wight, England

• His major field of study was Cellular Biology • In which he discovered the cell theory • Published a pamphlet on capillary action and

the Latin anagram ceiiinosssttuv or “Hooke’s Law”(F=-kx)

Page 13: Louis Pasteur

• One time he looked at a piece of cork under a microscope and saw tiny little holes in it and called them pores or cells and it stuck (estimated 1,159,712 pores per square inch)

• In his early years Hooke made a fully working watch out of all wood

• Awards he won were the Fellow of royal society award and the Hooke medal is presented by the British Society of Cell Biology every year

Page 14: Louis Pasteur

• A strange thing Hooke did was he would let leaches suck his blood to see where it went in their innards

• He also stung himself with nettles (poisonous plants) to see how fast the toxin spread

• Was not even an architect and was contracted to be chief surveyor to rebuild London after the great fire

Biologist, Ecologist

• Major accomplishments: teaching people about the harmful effects of pesticides.

• Scientific findings: DDT is very harmful to the environment and can cause cancer among humans.

• Publications: Silent Springs, (which made people realize how DDT effects the environment), Under the Sea Wind and The Sea Around Us

• Awards and honors: National Book Award, the Gold Medal of New York Zoological Society, and the John Burroughs Medal.

• Other interesting facts: people said that she couldn’t be a scientist because she was a girl. While writing the book Under the Sea Wind she went under water in a bathysphere. Rachel began writing Under the Sea Wind when she was only 10 years old.

1749-1823English

Fields: Biology, Medicine

Page 19: Louis Pasteur

What was he known for?

Interesting Facts:

• He tested the vaccine on his son

• He became a surgeon at 14 years old

He inoculated people with cowpox, which in turn gave them immunity from smallpox for a period of time.

Charles Darwin• 1809-1882• Birthplace: Shrewsbury, England• Naturalist• Accomplishments:

– Voyage across South American coast– Discovered one of the most famous theories in in scientific

history• Theory of Evolution

– Changed the mindset of the world from previous religious beliefs

• Coined the term “speciation”– The branching of evolution from a single life form

– By: Justin Kosman

Page 21: Louis Pasteur

Discoveries and Facts• Found fossils on the Galapagos Islands

– Compared to current creatures observed, evolutionary process was exposed

– Finches were studied to understand process• Publications:

– On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection– The Descent of Man

• Awards:– Darwin award given every year to select scientists– Nobel prize dedication

• Facts:– Born on the same day as Abe Lincoln– Frequently attacked verbally for opposing religious views– Said to have renounced evolution on his death bed in order to please the

general public• Reporter published his works and the idea caught on anyway

Gifford Pinchot came from a lumberyard family, now, this is very important because it leads therest of his life and you’ll soon see why. Pinchotfinished his undergraduate studies at Yale University as his father first requested, thenwhen he finished he moved to France for a year to study at the French National Forestry School in Nancy, France. When he returned he talked to his dad about there bad ways and convinced him to turn their estate in Milford, PA(the Grey Tower’s) into a nursery. His father having realized the damage he had done agreed and so Gifford's life as an official forester began. He became involved in the National Forest Commission created by the National Academy of Science. On his second year he was named Chief Division of Forestry. His friend Roosevelt was elevated to President do to theassassination of President McKingley. And then with the help of his beloved friend Rooseveltthe forestry service really took off. In 1905 there where 60 forest reserves adding up to 52 million acres; however in 1910 there where 150 National Forest all adding up to 172 million acres, now that’s a big leap. His life was always fully dedicated to saving the trees of the world one step at a time even though many stood in his way. Gifford died in his family estate knowingthat he had completed the greatest good known to man, saving the earth’s beauty for years to come. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gifford_Pinchot

Sir Alexander Fleming

Winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1995

• Alexander’s “claim to fame” was his discovering of Penicillin.

• He also discovered an important bacteriolytic substance named lysozyme.

comparison

• They both went into the same field of science

• Worked together on the DNA helix• Still teach at Harvard , in leading

laboratory, have a very high profile• Also both got a Nobel prize in 1962

Dian Fossey

•Born in San Francisco, California on January 16, 1932•She was murdered in her bedroom while in her cabin in Rwanda December 26, 1985 at the age of 53.

Her fields of study:•Ethology•Primatology

She saved the mountain gorillas from extinction.

She created the Digit fund to help raise money to protect the gorillas.

On September 24, 1967 she established Karisoke™ Research Center. It is between two volcanoes: Mt. Karisimbi and Mt. Vosike.

Dian

Fossey

She wrote a story called Woman in the Mist ‘The Story of Dian Fossey and the Mountain Gorillas of Africa’

She was influenced by Jane Goodall, Louis Leakey and George Schaller.

She felt amazed when a male gorilla: Peanut, reached out and touched her hand. It was the first peaceful gorilla-to-human contact ever recorded.

When she went to Africa for the first time, she used her life savings and a little loan from the bank just to get there and make her dream a reality.

Page 32: Louis Pasteur

•Salk first went to school for law then realized his interest in medical science

•He spent many years researching a cure for influenza, but ended up with a vaccine for polio.

• Jonas Salk founded Salk Institution for Biological Studies.

•Salk wrote many scientific books and essays.

•He also set the stage for the development of psychoneuroimmunology (the study of the effects of psychological factors on the immune system).
