ADMINISTRATORS’ MESSAGE
It is hard to believe that we are already nearing the winter
holidays and that our busy fall season is coming to an end.
The month of November brought students, staff and
community together for several thought-provoking and
memorable assemblies around the Holocaust and
Remembrance Day.
Meanwhile, our student athletes have enjoyed opportunities
to participate in volleyball games at the school level and in
tournaments against other schools. Our interview evening
this year included our annual ‘Festival du livre’ which is
always well-attended. Thank you to Mme McNeill for
organizing the book fair.
Finally, we would like to thank all parents and guardians who
visited our school for interviews. Research proves that
parents and guardians who are involved in their children’s
education help to secure student success at school. We value
your support and interest in working together as partners in
your children’s education.
We would like to welcome our new Vice-Principal, Mme
Eugenia Korinis, to the L.H. Fréchette community. She
comes to us from Elders Mills, a dual French immersion
school. Bienvenue Madame!
As we approach the holidays, we would like to wish each and
every one of you a safe and restful break as you spend time
with family and friends. We look forward to seeing all of our
students rested and eager to learn in
the New Year! Respectfully yours, , Mme Furlin et Mme Selick
Winter Break
Our Winter Break this year is
from December 24th to January
4th, 2013. Please let the school
know if you will be leaving

French Immersion Accommodation Plan YRDSB recently completed a year-long review of the French as a Second Language (FSL) pro-
grams, including Core French and French Immersion (FI). One of the outcomes of this review was a
toolkit to address the need for French immersion spaces and allow the Planning department to craft a
long-term FI accommodation plan for students across York Region. YRDSB’s FI program will be
offered in a variety of settings: Dual Track (Grades 1-8), Primary Dual Track (Grades 1-2 or 1-3)
and Single Track (Grades 1-8, 2-8, or 3-8). Students may begin the French Immersion program in
one location, but continue in a different location. This will allow flexibility in addressing community
needs and the opportunity to use existing space in schools. The new accommodation plan will pro-
vide long-term consistency and equity of access to all students in York Region and will enable
YRDSB to continue to offer the FI program to all who wish to enrol.
You can find more information about the program, as well as a school locator, on the YRDSB web-
site. Information sessions for Louis-Honoré Fréchette P.S. for the FI program will take
place at the school on January 23, 2013 at 7 p.m. On-line registration will take place
Feb. 1 – 15, 2013 on the YRDSB website. The location of the information session is not neces-
sarily the school your child will attend. Please note: Some of the FI accommodation plans will re-
quire facility modifications or the development of new schools and will require short-term transition
plans that might include overflow while we work toward the long-term vision.
LOST AND FOUND REMINDER Parents and students are to retrieve any lost articles from the Lost & Found before December 21st, 2012. As of the afore mentioned date, all lost & found articles will be collected and donated to charity. Jeffrey Guthrie, Lead Caretaker, L.H. Fréchette P.S.

L.H. Fréchette Remembers
Every year on November 11th, Canadians pause in a moment of silence to remember the men and women who have served, and
continue to serve our country during times of war, conflict and peace. We honour those who fought for Canada in the First World War (1914-1918),
the Second World War (1939-1945), and the Korean War (1950-1953), as well as those who have served since then. More than 1,500,000
Canadians have served our country in this way, and more than 100,000 have died. They gave their lives and their futures so that we may live in
peace.
On Tuesday, November 13th, Louis-Honoré Fréchette paid tribute to our courageous soldiers who stood up for and continue to stand up for
Canadian values, democracy, freedom, and liberty and for the rights that
we are so fortunate to enjoy today. We continue to recognize the past, in order to pay tribute to the soldiers who have fought in wars for the
Canadian military and to honour the great sacrifice and dedicated service of those who have served and continue to serve, our county.
Thank you to the Remembrance Day committee for organizing a very
moving ceremony.
Holocaust Awareness Month
On Monday November 12th, Holocaust survivor, Gerda Frieberg was a
guest speaker at L.H. Fréchette. Presenting to the Grade 5-8 students, Ms. Frieberg shared her experience of living and surviving through the
Holocaust. She emphasized the value of family and reminded students that maintaining respect for all people is key to making the world a better
place. We extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Ms. Frieberg for presenting at our school.

2012 will be December 14th. There will be no sub

Healthy Schools Update
Health Schools Committee: Milk Program
New forms will be out shortly. Please fill it out and return on time. There will be no late
orders accepted, it causes too much confusion. Thanks for the understanding. Healthier Options
I’m sure everyone is gearing up for the holidays. While doing so try to think of healthy
alternatives to support your child/children’s learning. Some ideas for a healthy lunch:
Make your own lunch box-deli meats (the chemical free one) veggie crackers;
Another option: whole-wheat crackers with cheese cubes and cherry tomatoes;
Yogurt with granola (nut free);
Hard-boiled eggs
Quiche and salad or cut up veggies
And now that its getting cold why not soup or chili Remember use a thermos to keep things hot or cold. They are great re-usable containers that
help save the environment too! Also have your children accompany you to the grocery store and show them some healthier
alternatives. Most of all have fun with it and be creative! If you have any interesting ideas please send them to me and I can put them in our school
newsletter. Have a great Holiday Season and see you in 2013! Happy New Year! Meetings
They are generally held once a month on a Tuesday at 4 pm, as the students also participate.
We would love to see you there! Stay tuned for the next meeting, which will be in January
2013.
Any questions or to volunteer please contact: Judy at [email protected]

Thank you very much to all of you who supported the Festival du Livre. Our
sales this year totalled over $6,000.00. As a result, we are able to purchase over

PEANUTS PLEASE:
Please refrain from
sending any products that
may contain nuts or nut products to
school. Please be reminded that
you put children at serious risk
when you bring food products into
the school that are not made in a
nut-free environment. Thank you
for continuing to help us keep all
children safe at school.
APPROPRIATE
OUTDOOR WEAR
Please be sure that your child is dressed
appropriately for outdoor activities.
It may be prudent to send an extra pair of pants, mitts and
socks in case children become too wet from outdoor play.
Please be sure to mark all clothing with your child’s name.
Our lost and found boxes are located just down the hall from
the main office. Please feel free to come and look through
these boxes for missing items.
STAYING INDOORS WHILE ILL
We sometimes receive requests from parents to allow a child to remain indoors at recess due to ill-
ness. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate these requests. We have no staff to supervise these
students; all our supervisors are on the school yard. It is our belief, and the recommendation of the
York Region Health Services, that students who are too ill to go outdoors, are also too ill to come to
school.
On severe weather days, we use Environment Canada guidelines to bring all students into the build-
ing early or use indoor recess routines.

Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs are rapidly expanding throughout the
York Region District School Board. We now have 28 of 31 secondary schools offering
these valuable programs and next year, we hope to see 30 of 31 schools running one or
more SHSM programs . The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) allows students to spe-
cialize in a specific economic sector (e.g. Health and Wellness, Business, Manufacturing,
Arts & Culture, etc) while fulfilling all requirements for their Ontario Secondary School
Diploma (OSSD). 100% of students in SHSM programs have had an enhanced educational
experience with contextualized learning, and additional experiential learning to enable them
to make more informed post-secondary destination decisions. Grade 7 & 8 students and
their families are encouraged to browse through the SHSM literature to investigate some
programs that may be of interest to them.
Secondary schools will be sharing SHSM information at their Grade 8 Open Houses for
families.
To learn more about SHSM, please visit:
