L A Hanson was child in a sailors family and so, very religious. He has written a little book for his children; Louis A. Hanson: “Life, Faith, and Duty”. In several letters to his sister and brother in law he told them to be patient and pray to God. Normally he also wrote that he would pray for her sister and later for his nice. He had sorrow himself after loosing 2 daughters. About 1882 Louis A Hanson built a house in Italianate style with Steamboat Gothic decoration, 114 Nun Street, New Hanover County, Wilmington, now named “Hansen House”. Saved for preservation by: Historic Wilmington Foundation, Inc. http://www.markeroni.com/catalog/display.php?code=NC_HW_152 The neighbor, 116 Nun Street, was the Andrew Smith family. Now “Andrew Smith House”. Italianate style house built about 1880 for Andrew Smith (1844-1907), a native of Sweden. He was a partner in Smith & Hanson, ship chandlers. Later engaged in real estate and brick manufacture. His wife, Lisette Miller (1853-1930) was a native of Hanover, Germany. I have not been able to find anything about Bertie, Carrie (1901), and very little on David. David has made a patent in 1919 and in the Fourteenth Census of the United States he is mentioned as manufacturer of chemicals. Edward was soldier in both World War I and II, and Louis A Jr. was manager of Spiritine Chemical Company. Henry W A was a respectable dr. and president of Gettysburg College, Pennsylvania. These two pictures are very interesting, because they are taken on the same occasion of the same person, possibly Louis Andrew Lolle Hanson. The left picture was send to Louis A. Hanson, Sr.’s family in Svaneke, Bornholm (now in Øarkivet, Rønne, Denmark), and the right picture was send to Madsine and Otto W. Nielsen in Copenhagen, but no date (now in Ringsted, Denmark). On the back of the right picture my uncle Harry H. Nielsen has written with pencil, that it is his father with a trombone in uniform, but not a soldier. I think that my uncle was wrong. So, I checked the pictures and analyzed the noses and the eyebrows of Otto L. R. Nielsen and Louis A. L. Hanson on other photos. It cannot be my grand father, because his nose was not straight. It was curved as in contrast to Louis’s nose. It was straight. Convince yourself by watching the two pictures below. Further more, a proud father would not send two nearly identical pictures of his nephew to Denmark. Of course, he would have send pictures of his own son, the dauphin, next generation in Spiritine Chemical Company.

SPIRITTINE CHEMICAL COMPANY, Distillers and Refiners of Pitch Pine Products. Sole Manufacturers of Spirittine, Factory, Foot Dawson St., and Malmo, N. C.

No enterprise in the city has done more to make the name of Wilmington well-known abroad, both in this country and in Europe, than has the Spirittine Chemical Co., which was founded in 1890, and incorporated about two years later. Mr. Wm. R. Kenan is president and Mr. L. Hanson is general manager. The company's plant is of a special and improved character. When this branch of production was first introduced by Mr. Hanson, some twenty-five years ago, it was entirely new to this country, he having no predecessor. He was the first to utilize the liquids that emanate from the pine, and which by disintegration and distillation at various temperatures produce the varieties of products. The leading specialties of the company are:

[Spirittine Chemical Company, Distillers and Refiners of Pitch Pine Products. Sole Manufacturers of Spirittine, Factory, Foot

Dawson St., and Malmo, N. C.]

Spirittine Wood Preserver, which is an oil obtained from the destructive distillation of pine heart. It contains about fifty per cent. of wood creosote, and fifty per cent. of neutral insoluble oils. The oil will penetrate the wood, thoroughly filling all the pores and hardening it. It greatly reduces the inflamability, and it is easily applied with any ordinary brush, dries in a very short time and does not interfere with painting or varnishing. Water and air are excluded from wood treated by this process. As is well known, water and air hold the germs that induce decay, and in excluding these germs, the destructive enemy is baffled. It is an effective and economical method of preserving ships' timbers from the ravages of the Teredo Navalis, or ship worm, the destructive work of which insect is well known. It is the best preservative for timber, piles, cross ties, telegraph poles, wooden blocks for paving, lumber used in mines and other underground work. The company have received a large number of testimonials from rail road companies, ship builders, scow and lighter owners, car builders, dry docks, mills and others, who, having used this oil, vouch for its efficiency and desirability. Spirittine Paint Oil is the best suited for outside work, including iron, wood and brick work. It is low in price and for durability cannot be surpassed. It preserves Page 77 any kind of wood under all conditions, wet or dry. It is a disinfectant and all kind of insects or microbes have it in detestation and leave it severely alone. It is the most efficient oil for making preservative paints, extant. Attention is also due to Spirittine Balsam, which is a specific for asthma, rheumatism, influenza, croup, colds and all lung diseases, and it is at the same time an efficient

germicide. This remedy has received the endorsement of the Anerican Journal of Health of New York, and the New York Magazine of Sanitation and Hygiene, as well as other high medical authorities. The company also manufacture

Oil of Tar, Wood Creosote Oil, Pure Pine Oil, Spirittine Brick Preserver, Soluable Spirittine for disinfecting purposes, Spirittine Disinfectant and Refined Pyroliginous Acid, Sheep Dip, Wood Naphtha, Spirit of Tar, etc. Manufacturing chemists and others, use largely of these products, which are of such a useful character, that they are available in many branches of manufacture. Mr. William R. Kenan is the president of the company, Mr. L. Hanson has been connected with the enterprise from its inception. Wilmington is well located for operating the industry; the raw material being close at hand. The company invite correspondence and will forward explanatory printed matter and all required information
