COUNTY CAVANis the beautiful land of lakesin the middle of our island. This is a place away from it all - butnot that far away. The people here aredown-to-earth and welcoming. The onlyresidents who won’t be glad to meet youare our fish… that’s just how they are.

Our restaurants rank among the bestin the country and our love of music isknown to continue into the early hours..

“An Cabhan” is an old Irish word meaning“The Hollow” – and in a simple way thatsays a lot about this place. Cavan is arefuge, a place to rejuvenate, a shelterfrom stress.

Many visitors note that once you gethere, the pace of things seems to slowdown a bit. Whatever the reason for thischange of pace, you’ll be surprised byjust how many great attractions andactivities we have here to fill all thatwonderfully slowed-down Cavan time.

GOLF

...AND OTHER EXCUSESIn Cavan a wise golfer is always prepared forthe inevitable with a few extra balls. It’s almost a tradition for first-time visitors to blame theviews for adding six shots to their card… And if your driveskeep finding those ancient woods along our lush fairways…just blame the fairies.

Why all the excuses? Well our golf courses are gorgeouslychallenging. Amongst the 8 courses in Co. Cavan, aremagnificent, mature 18 hole parkland courses of nationalrenown, and charming 9 hole courses where every holedeserves to be played twice. So try to ignore the beautifulviews and let us know how that goes for you.

Clough Oughter Castle

This land has been home for Neolithic, Bronze Age,Celtic, Norman & Early Christian peoples. They allbuilt here and left their mark for us to admire.

Clough Oughter Castle was built by the Normansin the 12th century. The locals were so impressedby the new place that they quickly captured it forthemselves. The O’Reillys fought hard to retain

this roof over their heads until Cromwell’sforces finally blasted through the walls in 1653.The breached walls lie where they fell, and forhundreds of years the castle has belonged to noone but its painters, poets and curious visitors. So what was all the fuss about this place? Thesame as it ever was - location, location, location!

HAND-ME-DOWNSfrom history. Before this place was calledCavan it was called Breifne, and before thatit was called something else.
