When it came to choosing a Honeymoon location me and Louise had differing ideas of an ideal Honeymoon. Louise would have just loved two weeks sitting on a beach and soaking up rays. For me that would have been a nightmare. Apart from sun burn I cannot think of anything worse than sitting down and doing nothing. We therefore had to find somwhere we could relax in comfortable heat and that would contain enough adventure to keep me happy. Italy it seemed was the per-fect compromise.

The Birth Place Of The Pizza

Mount Vesuvius is a stratovolcano on the Bay of Naples, Italy, about 9 kilometres east of Naples and a short distance from the shore. It is the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted within the last hundred years.

Mount Vesuvius is best known for its eruption in AD 79 that led to the destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. They were never rebuilt, although surviving townspeople and probably looters did undertake extensive salvage work after the destructions. The towns’ locations were eventually forgotten until their accidental rediscovery in the 18th century.

It is known worldwide that Naples, Italy, is the home of pizza. History shows that many Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cultures were al-ready eating a variation of it, but the conclusion is that it was perfected in Naples.

At first pizza was a peasant dish. Street vendors walked the streets, selling it to the people. It slowly gained popularity among the Italian aristocracy and eventually pizzerias evolved. One can find pizzerias and pizza stands every-where around Naples. Buy it whole or in slices. Eat standing or sitting down. Maybe have it in a local restaurant near the seaside or within the city’s streets. When visiting Naples, pizza’s almost a must.

Naples is the capital of the region of Campania and of the province of Naples. Known for its rich history, art, culture, architecture, music, and gastronomy, Naples has played an important role in the Italian peninsula and beyond for much of its existence, which began more than 2,800 years ago. Situated on the west coast of Italy by the Gulf of Naples, the city is located halfway between two volcanic areas, Mount Vesuvius and the Phlegraean Fields.

The city of Pompeii is a partially buried Roman town-city near modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania, in the territory of the comune of Pompei. Along with Herculaneum, its sister city, Pompeii was destroyed and completely buried during a long cata-strophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius span-ning two days in 79 AD. The eruption buried Pompeii under 4 to 6 meters of ash and pumice, and it was lost for over 1,500 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1599. Since then, its excavation has provided an extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city at the height of the Roman Empire. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Italy, with approximately 2,500,000 visi-tors every year.

The Blue Grotto Ischia

Sorrento (Surriento) is a small town in Campania, southern Italy, with some 16,500 inhabitan ts. It is a popular tourist destination which can be reached easily from Naples and Pompeii, as it lies at the south-eastern end of the Circumve-suviana rail line. The town overlooks the Bay of Naples as the key place of the Sorrentine Peninsula, and many viewpoints allow sight of Naples itself, Vesuvius and the Isle of Capri.

The Blue Grotto (Italian: Grotta Azzurra) is a noted sea cave on the coast of the island of Capri, Italy. Sunlight, passing through an underwater cavity and shining through the seawater, cre-ates a blue reflection that illuminates the cavern.

The grotto was known by the Romans, as proved by the an-tique statues which were found in the Grotto.[1] This discovery, the remains of an ancient landing place and the work on an un-derground tunnel, create an image of a natural cavern adorned by statues.

Capri pronounced is an island in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the Sorrentine Peninsula, on the south side of the Gulf of Na-ples, in the Campania region of Southern Italy. It has been a resort since the time of the Roman Republic.

Features of the island are the Marina Piccola (the little har-bour), the Belvedere of Tragara, which is a high panoramic promenade lined with villas, the limestone crags called sea stacks that project above the sea (the Faraglioni), Anacapri, the Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra), and the ruins of the Impe-rial Roman villas

Ischia is a volcanic island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, at the northern end of the Gulf of Naples. It is almost entirely mountainous, with the highest peak being Mount Epomeo at 788 meters.

The main industry is tourism, centering on thermal spas that cater mostly to tourists eager to enjoy the fruits of the island’s natural volcanic activity, its thermal hot springs, and its volcanic mud.

Roma is the capital of Italy and the country’s largest and most populated city and comune, with over 2.7 million residents

Rome today is one of the most important tourist destinations of the world, due to the incalculable immensity of its archaeologi-cal and artistic treasures, as well as for the charm of its unique traditions, the beauty of its panoramic views, and the majesty of its magnificent “villas” (parks). Among the most significant re-sources are the many museums, aqueducts, fountains, churches, palaces, historical buildings, the monuments and ruins of the Roman Forum, and the Catacombs.

We’ll be heading out of Rome and off the beaten track to experi-ence a different side of Italy in Tuscany and Umbria. We’ll visit the lovely towns of Cortona and Montepulciano, and sample wine, cheeses, salami, olive oil and other local specialties.
