Amazon design skills havealso been applied to producea new generation of 19 inchracks to protect electronic, IT and telecommunicationsequipment against climaticextremes and rough handlingin field conditions. AmazonRacks combine the toughresilience of a rotomouldedcase with a lightweightstainless steel rack frame and a unique elastomericsuspension system.

Design features in addition to those of Amazon Cases include:

• Available from 4U to 12U with various standard 19 inch inner frame depth options.

• Eight ‘Bi-Angle’ elastomeric anti-vibration mounts (pat.pend.) with a choice of hardness grades, angled towardscentre of gravity of the rack frame, provide optimisedshock protection in all orientations.

• Superior ‘sway space’ between inner frame and outercase to prevent contact with outer container undersevere impact.

• Optional ‘Easy Glide’ (pat. pend.) removable, selfanchoring, internal frame system for convenience andspeed of maintenance/replacement of equipment.

• Standard, stainless steel M6 threaded fasteners secureelectronic equipment into floating stainless steel cagenuts at both front and rear of frame, providing ease of equipment fitting.

• Rack frame has additional M6 fixing holes in the rear face to accommodate non standard equipment.

• All threaded fasteners are field replaceable – no specialtool required.

• The inner rack frame and all fittings are stainless steel,making Amazon Racks totally RoHS compliant.

• All racks have positive stacking, aligning at the front faceregardless of rack depth.

• Internal rack frame conforms to BS5954 / BS EN 60297 /DIN 41494.

SPECIAL RACK FEATURES

All Amazon Racks (excluding the removable ‘Easy Glide’ option) have a user-adjustable innerrack frame that can be positioned 25mm forward or back from its central position to allow the

accommodation of varying front panel and rearwiring needs. This drawing shows the ‘sway space’between the inner frame and outer container in itsthree different positions.

It also shows the length of equipment that can be housed in the rack in these three positions. Note that long equipment should be located above the bottom position.

Wheels (cases and racks)Cases of 750mm in length and greater have provision for fitting optional 70mm ‘roller blade’ recessed wheels.Similarly all racks can be fitted with two optional recessedwheels, housed in the deeper 125mm lid.

These robust wheels allow ease of handling with heavierloads, wheels do not protrude beyond the externaldimensions of Amazon Cases and Racks, and are designedto come into operation, with 20mm ground clearance, asthe case or rack is tilted, but do not interfere with stackingor stowage (pat. pend.).

Two additional handles are provided on the front lid ofracks fitted with wheels.

Removable inner frame (racks)Amazon provides a removable ‘Easy Glide’ inner frameoption (pat. pend.) without loss of anti-vibrationcharacteristics, to allow complete withdrawal of the 19 inch inner frame in constricted spaces or semi-permanent installations.

Simple and rapid withdrawal, by front access, without any special tools is achieved by removing 4 x M8 stainlesssecurity bolts and sliding the 19 inch frame, with all itscontents in place, towards you. Once fully removed, the 19 inch frame contents can be fully accessed formaintenance or repair.

To replace the frame simply reverse the process, slide the frame down 4 Teflon coated glide runners, whichautomatically ‘self-anchors’ the frame at the rear, andreplace the 4 x M8 security bolts. The frame is then firmlysecured within the glide runners in the outer container.

Removable lift-off lids (C)Lids can be made completelyremovable by fitting catches all round. Catches can also be inverted so that the lid

becomes the base and vice versa creating a largelift-off lid for easy acess to contents.

Pressure relief valves (CR)Amazon cases are virtually airtight.A two way automatic pressureand vacuum relief valve withmanual override release pushbutton enables equalisation ofthe pressure inside and outside the container.

Gore membrane vent (CR)A Gore membrane ventallowing gradual equalisation ofinternal and external pressurewithout ingress of dust or water.

Humidity indicator (CR)Humidity indicators andreplaceable desiccantcontainers can be fitted foreffective humidity controlduring long-term storage.

Padlockable catches (CR)Any of the standard catches canbe replaced with a padlockabletoggle latch which takes apadlock with a hasp diameterup to 9mm.

Injection mouldedhandles (CR)The number of handles suppliedwith standard cases is shown inthe size list. Additional injectionmoulded handles can be fittedif required.

Steel handles (CR)Black steel handles areavailable as an alternative to the injection mouldedhandles supplied as standard.

Labelling (CR)Provision is made to take an A5 size label on case lids andsmaller labels at various pointson cases and racks. A variety of labelling options is availableincluding engraved metal and

back printed, non scratch polycarbonate. A hardwearing write-on wipe-off label kit is also availablecomplete with marker pen and cleaning solvent.

Tie-down fittings (CR)Steel tie-down fittings are available for securingAmazon containers and racks to ships’ decks or in air cargoapplications.

Rack straps (R)Provision is made on everyAmazon Rack to fit ‘Rack-Straps’. This secures rackstogether when stacked. All racks align at the frontregardless of rack depth.

Interstacker (CR)Both Amazon Cases and AmazonRacks are each stackable. A universal interstacker isavailable which allows AmazonRacks to be stacked securelyonto Amazon Cases.

The same interstacker can befitted with 4 x 100mm castorsto provide secure location and movement of heavy loadsup to 300Kg.

INTERNAL OPTIONS

Elastomeric mountoptions (R)Stiffer elastomeric mounts areavailable for payloads in excessof 50Kg. Elastomeric mountscan also be fitted in tandem at each corner of the internal

suspended frame, to give a total of 16 anti-vibrationmounts. This provides a controlled ride for veryheavy loads.

Wire rope anti-vibrationmounts (R)Where required wire ropeisolators can be fitted in place of elastomeric mounts.These comprise of stainless steel stranded cable, threaded

through aluminum alloy retaining bars, crimped and mounted for effective vibration isolation. Their corrosion resistance, all-metal construction,gives environmentally stable, high-performanceshock and vibration protection that is non toxic and is unaffected by temperature extremes,chemicals, oils, solvents and abrasives.

Rack drainage (R)Operationally, racks are oftendeployed in wet conditions with lids removed. The optionaldrain hole allows water to bedrained whilst retaining theintegrity of the outer container with the lids in place.

Rack frame conductivecoating (R)For specialist applications the rack frame can be given a black conductive coating forElectro Magnetic Compatibility

or Electrostatic Discharge purposes. The fully curedfilm results in a resistivity of less than 1 ohm persquare metre. Typical attenuation figures forelectro-magnetic radiation are available on request.

Fixed support rails (R)Fixed rails can be user fitted to 480mm and 610mm deepframes to support heavy / deepequipment, in addition bracketsand fixings can be designed andsupplied for installing non 19 inchequipment within the rack frame.

Telescopic support rails (R)Telescopic support rails areavailable to allow full access to racked equipment. Check with our engineersbefore installation to ensurecompatibility with theequipment being fitted.

Earthing /groundingpoint (R)Earthing/grounding points can be fitted to allow fordischarge of static electricityfrom the inner rack frame and its mounted equipment.

Protective skirt (R)For protection against the ingress of rain underoperational conditions with thelid removed, a flexible rubberskirt can be fitted between theouter casing and the internal

rack frame. It is important to ensure that equipmentfront panels are watertight to prevent water entry.

Cable storage pouch (R)Another unique design featureis the optional zipped pouchwhich can be snapped securelyin place in both shallow anddeep rack lids for the neat

storage of cabling and leads. Cable pouches can be retro fitted by users without the use of tools.

Tamper evident catch (CR)Cable ties can be applied (as shown in the photograph) to secure content againstpilferage and tampering.

The rotomoulding processAn aluminium metal mould is filledwith a predetermined quantity ofpolymer powder, closed, clampedand then passed into an ovenchamber.

The mould is heated externally to ahigh temperature and rotated aroundboth vertical and horizontal axes. Asthe powder inside heats up, it beginsto melt and adhere to the inner surfaceof the mould. This continues until a layer of molten plastic is formedover the inner surface of the mould.

In the cooling chamber air is directedat the mould and in some caseswater jets are used. When the plasticinside the mould has become solid,the mould can be removed from the chamber.

The Amazon Case or Rack is thenremoved from the mould andallowed to cool in a cooling jig toprevent distortion. Cycle time canvary from 20 minutes to one hour.There is a natural thickening ofmaterial at edges and corners whichincreases strength as the plastic isformed without pressure and as aresult has no moulded in stresses.

Rotomoulding materialAmazon Cases uses high quality Linear Low Density Polyethylene. This hexane copolymer is designedto offer superior processability,excellent dimensional control and low warpage. The resin used is ideallysuited for applications that requireexcellent surface appearance and an optimum balance of stress crackresistance, toughness and stiffnessproperties. Cases and Racks mouldedfrom this polymer comply with MIL-STD-810F which includes testingat –40˚c to +70˚c.

LLDPE is a UV stabilised, nonhazardous material which is easy toclean and has a wide resistance toacids, alkalis and organic solvents.

Standard colours are NATO green,admiralty grey, black and desert sand.For quantities greater than 25 units a wide range of alternative standardcolours is available.

Special materialsFlame Retardant – If flame retardantproperties are required AmazonCases can provide polymer with aflame retardant additive classified to UL94 at 3mm thickness.

IRR – For NATO green cases only, an additive is used to achieve infra-red reflective properties. Theresulting case is fully UV stabilisedand conforms to STANNAG 2338 in shade and near IR reflectivity.

High temperature operation –If operation in high temperatures is required a cross-linked polymergrade can be used which provides a product that can be used intemperatures up to 100˚c.

Anti-static – Polymer is available withadditives which render it permanentlyconductive and anti-static with asurface resistivity of approx 2.9 x 105

ohm/cm2. Available in black only.

There is an additional cost and lead-time if any of these special materialsare required.

PROCESS AND MATERIALS

ROTOMOULDING SERVICES

CustomisationFlame RetardantAmazon Cases offers a bespoke foam cushioning service toprotect delicate electronic and mechanical equipment.Plastazote polyethylene foam is

used which has a closed cell structure to eliminateabsorption of moisture. The correct grade / densityand amount of foam can be calculated to providethe exact degree of cushioning specified. The foamis then precision cut on fully computerised foamrouting equipment.

Tray SystemsIt is often space effective to fit trays into Amazon Cases for small pieces of equipment orcomponents. These are usually manufactured fromwelded 3mm HDPE sheet and can be completelycustomised to fit any specific application.

Partition SystemsAmazon Cases can be fitted with customisedpartitioning systems. The example shown isproduced from interlocked and welded 3mm HDPE sheet which is welded securely into the case. Additional foam blocks can be added to provide further cushioning. If required fulldrawings can be provided prior to production using Solid Works software.

Anti-Shock Platforms Amazon Cases has fullengineering drawing and metal fabrication facilities and is able to extensivelymodify our product to meet

demanding specifications. The example shown is a shock absorption platform inside a standardcase for transport of radar antennae.

Non standard sizesFor quantities in excess of 200,Amazon style cases can bemanufactured cost effectively in any size for an exact fit ofequipment. The examplesshown here were manufactured

for the French Gendarmerie for the rapiddeployment of equipment. The specification calledfor fire retardancy and they were manufactured withfire retardant additives to the exact dimensionsnecessary to fit in a specific vehicle.

Bespoke serviceFor quantities as few as 350,Amazon Cases offers acomplete rotomoulding service,which ranges from creating a design concept, rapidprototyping and producing a ‘space’ model, through tovolume production. Design

options include ‘double skin’ mouldings to providebespoke internal sculpturing, together with foamcushioning and PU ‘skinned foam’ mouldings. The example shown is a case for carrying homedialysis equipment, where the brief called for a high level of protection for the product coupledwith a ‘luggage’ appearance to give end useracceptability.
