John White (1540-1593) English artist and oneof several early English colonists who sailedwith Sir Richard Grenville's expedition in 1585.
During his time at Roanoke Island he madenumerous famous drawings with watercolorsof the landscapes and native people. Hissuperb watercolors of native plants, animalsand Indian life, give us an insight into what theEnglish found during their explorations.
White was described as a "Gentleman ofLondon" became Governor of the secondRoanoke colony in 1587. He led a band ofsettlers sent out by Sir Walter Raleigh underthe authority of the Virginia Company. He wasthe father of Eleanor Dare and grandfather ofVirginia Dare, the first English born child in
the New World. He returned to England formuch needed supplies and was not able toreturn to Roanoke Island until 1590 where hefound the colony empty. He spent the
remainder of his life in England and Ireland.

Queen Elizabeth (1533-1603) wasprobably England's most popularsovereign. In March 1584 she grantedSir Walter Raleigh a patent entitlinghim to occupy such lands as he maydiscover in the name of the crown ofEngland. As a result of this patent, she
was the benefactor of Virginia. In honorof her, the "Virgin Queen," the nameVirginia was given to the territoryclaimed by Raleigh's men in the New
World. Elizabeth I has been creditedwith the devotion to duty and love of
her country that has made "England"stand forever

Manteo was the Chief of a local NativeAmerican tribe that befriended the Ralph Lanecolony that arrived on Roanoke Island in 1585.
Arriving too late in the year to plant crops andharvest for food, Manteo helped the coloniststo avoid starvation until they were able toprovide food for themselves. He made two tripsto England and was listed among those sailingfor the New World in 1587 with Governor White
and his colonists. By the command of SirWalter Raleigh, Manteo was christened onRoanoke Island and invested with the title of afeudal baron, Lord of Roanoke andDasamonqueponke on Sunday, August 13, 1587.This was the first peerage elected by the Englishin America. Manteo was also the first Native
American to be received into the Church ofEngland. It was Manteo and his people atCroatoan that the colonists expected to turn toin case of need until Governor White returnedfrom England with supplies.

Sir Walter Raleigh (1522-1618) Born to a
protestant family in Devon he is one ofthe most colorful characters in Englishhistory. Navigator, historian, soldier,poet and explorer, he initiated theRoanoke voyages and Englishcolonization of the New World. Raleigh
never visited the New World. He iscredited with having introduced boththe potato and tobacco to England from
America. He was knighted by QueenElizabeth I in 1585. It is historically truethat the episode of the cloak thrown in
the puddle for Queen Elizabeth I didindeed happen. It was from thisincident that Raleigh's favor with theQueen grew.

Eleanor White Dare (1563-?) One ofthe sixteen women who left Englandin 1587 --as part of the Roanokeexpedition. She was the daughter ofGovernor John White and wife of
Ananias Dare. Eleanor gave birth toVirginia Dare, the first child ofEnglish parents born in North
America on August 18, 1587 shortlyafter their arrival from England. Shedisappeared with the colony while her
father Governor White returned toEngland for supplies.

Simon Fernandez was a Portuguesenavigator from Azores Island. He pilotedthe Roanoke Voyages from 1584 to 1587.Fernandez was by trade a privateer in theescalating war between England andSpain. The Chesapeake Bay area wasoriginally the decided area for the 1587
voyage with Governor White and hiscolonists. By the time the caravan arrived
at Roanoke Island to check on the fifteenmen that were left a year earlier, he hadgrown inpatient with Governor Whiteand anxious to resume the hunt forSpanish trading. He ordered the colonistsashore on Roanoke Island and
abandoned the idea of taking thecolonists to the Chesapeake Bay area. Tendays later, Fernandez departed forEngland taking along the anxious John
White, who reluctantly decided to returnto England for supplies.

Life in the Roanoke colony began for the 119 colonistwhen they left Plymouth, England on May 8th, 1587 inthree ships. Simon Fernandez was in charge of the
voyage as lead captain. They arrived off the coast ofRoanoke Island on July 16. On July 22 the colonists getoff the ships and arrive on the island to find no onethere.

The colonists began their
new life by making repairsto the houses that hadbeen built by the men
who had occupied the areabefore.
They also began to till the ground andplant crops such as corn, tobacco, indigo,
and rice. It would have been very difficultto raise crops on Roanoke Island becausethe ground was so sandy and the air was sosalty.

At first all the Native Americans were friendlywith the new settlers. They helped them plantcrops and served as guides along the coastal
waterways. They even traded with them. But it
wasnt long before some of the Native Americansbegan to worry about what the white settlers
were going to do.

Before the Roanoke Colony settlers arrived the small
number of white men that had settled in the area had aserious fight in which one of the tribal leaders, Wingina,
was killed along with several of the settlers. By the time theRoanoke settlers arrived only the Croatoan tribe was stillfriendly with the English .
