De antemano (Beforehand)
• Before we can start to talk about the quantity of people and things, we must learn the expressions:– Hay– No hay
![Page 6: Los números](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022072013/56812bc0550346895d900377/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Existence
• In a statement, the word “Hay” means:– There is– There are
• In a question the word “¿Hay?” means:– Is there?– Are there?
![Page 7: Los números](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022072013/56812bc0550346895d900377/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Non-existence
• In a statement, the phrase “No hay” means:– There is not/There isn’t– There are not/ There aren’t
• In a question the phrase “¿No hay?” means:– Isn’t there? /Is there not?– Aren’t there? / Are there not?
![Page 8: Los números](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022072013/56812bc0550346895d900377/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
¡OJO!• In questions and in negative statements with “hay” we don’t use
un/una before the noun unless we mean the number “one.”

To ask the quantity¿Cuánto?/ ¿ Cuánta? = How much?
¿ Cuántos?/ ¿ Cuántas? = How many?
The interrogative word to inquire about the quantity of people and things works as an adjective. It must agree with the noun being modified in gender (masculine/feminine) and number (singular/plural).
![Page 12: Los números](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022072013/56812bc0550346895d900377/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
How much?
¿Cuánto + masculine singular noun + hay?¿Cuánto dinero hay?
How much money is there?• ¿Cuánta + feminine singular noun + hay?
¿Cuánta tarea hay?How much homework is there?
![Page 13: Los números](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022072013/56812bc0550346895d900377/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
How many?
• ¿Cuántos + masculine plural noun + hay?¿ Cuántos chicos hay?
How many boys are there?• ¿ Cuántas + feminine plural noun + hay?
¿ Cuántas computadoras hay?How many computers are there?
![Page 14: Los números](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022072013/56812bc0550346895d900377/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Using numbers to answer “How many?”
• When someone asks the question “How many?” it calls for the use of numbers.
• When numbers are used as adjectives, they come before the noun.
![Page 15: Los números](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022072013/56812bc0550346895d900377/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
• Numbers from 0-100 do not change to agree with the noun, except for those ending in the number “one.” The word “uno” is not used as an adjective.
• The following numbers contain the number “one” and must agree in gender with the noun being modified. (1, 21, 31, 41, 51, 61, 71, 81, 91)
• If the noun being counted is masculine, uno becomes un. If the noun being counted is feminine, uno becomes una.
![Page 16: Los números](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022072013/56812bc0550346895d900377/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
