! ! ! MEET ANDI MANDEL!!Born in Indianapolis, Andi moved around quite a bit before being drawn to California by the Beach Boys, the weather and a desire

to pursue her artistic freedom. She met Richard, a third generation Angelino, in Newport Beach; a friend attended UCSB with him, it was love at first sight and they have been married 39 years. They own Sterling Carpet and Flooring, have 3 children and 2 grandchildren. After graduating from Butler University and the John Herron School of Art, she taught art education for 10 years before becoming a stay-at-home Mom. Andi has a passion for modern art and still teaches privately; she has taught 3 older students who became exhibitors at the Laguna Art Festival. She joined Los Ninos last summer and volunteered to Co-Chair the upcoming August 6th wine event, Sip at Sunset. !Tid Bit: Her first teaching job right out of college was in Atlanta, Ga. during the first year of desegregation, surrounded by the National Guard. She said the little black boys wore their Sunday best suits/ties and 1 out of 5 had the first name Roosevelt. Joanne Woodward’s birth parents were killed when she was very young so she was raised by her mother’s sister and her uncle; she referred to them as her parents and the school where Andi taught was named after him since he was a prominent local businessman. They became close family friends.!!!

! ! ! MEET NICKI SWARTZ!!Raised in the San Fernando Valley, Nicki and her husband, Steve, moved to San Clemente in 1993 when he started a new business venture; they have been married 28+ years and have one son who is a senior, a mini labradoodle and a mini maltipoo. Nicki’s

mother and Yvonne Hendriks went to school together so she joined Los Ninos over 12 years ago. She and her husband own South Coast Surety (which helps provide surety and performance bonds for contractors, etc.) and she still works full time. They are among one of the largest commercial and contract bond surety producing agencies in the U.S. Nicki has always supported Los Ninos with our See’s Candy Sale and helps underwrite our Spring Bingo/Auction. Her hobbies include traveling, reading, card making/stamping, any outdoor activity and exploring new and different wines. Tid Bit: Nicki lost her first husband when she was 28 and then she and Steve tried fertility treatments for years before experiencing an epiphany at a aunt’s funeral who had adopted 2 children; they came home and began the journey to adopt Kyle.

!!P!!! A PHILANTHROPIST IN TRAINING!!Kylee Brotherton is Patti Brotherton’s 10 year old granddaughter; she is in 5th grade at Marblehead Elementary School and enjoys helping others. She and her friend Paige decided, unbeknownst to Patti, to hold a

bake sale one weekend in their neighborhood. They netted $43.90 and split the proceeds. On Sunday morning in church, Kylee handed Patti an envelope with a note stating what they did and that she wanted her proceeds to go to CHOC. Thank you, Kylee, for making a difference in such a positive way!!!! ! ! ! AUGUST WINE EVENT!!In Patti’s absence, Dianne Preston passed out raffle tickets for 3 items to help you keep August 6th in mind! Adelene Moothart won 2 coasters that said “Will Work for Shoes and Wine.” The second drawing for a package of napkins that said “My doctor says I need glasses” was won by Peggy Miller. Phyllis Holmberg won the last item; the plaque pictured below. Send Patti Brotherton or Andi Mandel the names/addresses of anyone you would like to receive an invitation. Since we don’t meet in July and August, do it now so you don’t forget! This will be a great way to kick off our 2015-16 year.!!GOOD FOOD, GOOD WINE, GOOD FRIENDS. WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT!!! !!

GOOD FRIENDS ARE LIKE QUILTS; !THEY AGE WITH YOU YET NEVER! LOSE THEIR WARMTH.!!!!!

! “BEE’S IN YOUR BONNET” BINGO LUNCHEON!!Guild members are busy as bees planning our upcoming Bingo Luncheon. Since it is our primary fundraising event, all classifications of membership are expected to contribute in one of three ways: (1) make a basket (2) provide items for auction or a basket (3) send a check for $25 to Dianne Preston, 62 Camino Lienzo, San Clemente, Ca. 92673 to help purchase items to fill a basket. Marianne Dorsey, 496-2336, has a list of the remaining available basket themes. Nan Quinn, 498-1898, is still collecting names/addresses of anyone you would like to invite. Invitations will be mailed April 1st. Peggy Miller and Patti Brotherton, et. al, have been gathering numerous gift certificates. Nicki Swartz and her husband are helping to underwrite the event. You won’t believe the beautiful auction items. Sheila Valenzuela produced the attached flyer which will be posted in the windows of businesses all over town. I submitted information and photos to the local papers for publicity. Since we have a larger venue this year, our capacity will be 220 so put it on your calendar now, plan to attend and bring your friends! Last year we sold out so don’t be left out! !!Please add the following merchants to the list published in last month’s newsletter so we don’t solicit donations again from the same establishments!!!Bye Bye Baby! ! ! ! ! This is a new technology which will prevent unnecessary catheterizations, which in turn, will result in lower incidences of urinary tract infections. The TV news has been reporting a new anti-biotic resistant bacteria that clings to the tip of these type of catheters. This machine will help prevent most of these procedures besides eliminating the pain and discomfort for the children. This is our biggest fundraiser so we need you!!!IF YOU WANT TO GO FAST, GO ALONE. ! ! ! CHOC’S “INFUSIONARIUM” TOUR!!Lois Augustine introduced Kara Kipp, CHOC Foundation’s Director of Major Leadership Gifts. Kara explained that the “Infusionarium” was the brainchild of Dr. Leonard Sender, Medical Director of the Hyundai Cancer Institute and the Dhont Family Foundation Outpatient Infusion Center (OPI) at CHOC. Dr. Sender has a friend who is a Disney Imagineer and together they developed this “Infusionarium” to benefit children up to the age of 19. This is the first program to combine immersive video technology with life-saving infusion therapy, such as chemotherapy or IV antibiotics. About 80% of the children are oncology patients, primarily with leukemia. Children are also treated with infusions for other diseases such as Crohn’s disease, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, sickle cell anemia and immune disorders. Dana Moran, an RN Charge Nurse who has a heart for this treatment area, conducted a tour for the Guild Presidents. The jumbo screens and fabric-draped interior looks more like a deluxe home theater than a hospital treatment room. Children can watch videos, run video game controls or choose an interactive session with the Aquarium at Long Beach, the San Diego Zoo, NASA’s space station, etc. They can also ask questions anonymously about any topic. The center employs a full-time Child Life Specialist, Christy Campo. Even though the program is in its infancy stage, there has already been a noticeable drop in anti-nausea medications.

She served as President for 2 years, Treasurer for 10 years and helped Ellen Williams with the See’s Candy Sale.
