Annual Resident/Fellow Symposium On May 12th The Los Angeles Society of Pathologists will hold our Annual Resident & Fellow Symposium. This year both case studies and research based presentations are acceptable. We will have First, Second and Third place prizes. The deadline for submission is April 3, 2015. If selected, you will be contacted by April 18th To submit a case, please follow the format and instructions outlined below: Create two PowerPoint presentations (PPT) and convert each of them to PDF before submitting them to [email protected] If submitting a research presentation no second PPT is required. Please remember your presentation will need to be no longer than 15 minutes which includes 3 minutes of Q & A Please type ‘Resident & Fellow Symposium’ in the subject line of your email and be sure to include all of your contact information in the body of your email. #1: The first PPT would be a "virtual slide" file that LASOP members would review before the meeting. This PDF presentation should include: * Page 1 - Your name and program affiliation * Page 2 - Pertinent patient history and symptoms * Pages 3+ - Images of the case (Note: Do NOT include the final diagnosis). #2: The second PPT would be a "handout" that would be posted to the LASOP website directly after the meeting. This PDF presentation should include: * Page 1 - Your name and program affiliation * Page 2 - Pertinent patient history and symptoms * Pages 3+ - Images of the case PLUS the final diagnosis, discussion of any differentials and all references. Additional guidelines: ● It is the responsibility of the author(s) to ensure that the identity of a patient is not apparent from the information contained in a case report. ● Use conventional units of measurement throughout the manuscript, with conversion factors for Systeme International (SI) units expressed once in parentheses after the first mention of the conventional unit. Example: "The blood glucose concentration of 126 mg/dL (to convert to millimoles per liter, multiply by 0.0555) was used as a criterion for diagnosing diabetes." If several laboratory values are listed, conversion factors may be listed in a paragraph at the end of the Materials and Methods or Report of a Case section. In tables and figures, conversion factors should be presented in the footnote or legend. Hematologic values should only be reported using conventional units. ● Use generic names of drugs, unless the specific trade name of a drug used is directly relevant to the discussion. ● Do not use abbreviations in the title or abstract, and limit their use in the text. ● When using acronyms, make certain the full name is spelled out on first use. ● Give sources (name of company and location) for all special reagents (e.g., antibodies, enzymes, probes). ● In listing references, follow AMA style, abbreviating names of journals according to Index Medicus. ● Authors are responsible for the accuracy of references.

Research Funding Available Fibrolamellar Cancer Foundation
The Fibrolamellar Cancer Foundation (FCF) has announced a major call for proposals to support innovative research, leading to curative treatments for this aggressive teen/young adult liver cancer. Importantly, ASCO and other major organizations have noted investigators should take high interest in this cancer, as- due to patient age- this is a relatively simple cancer, i.e. few mutations, which potentially allows applications to other diseases as well.
Introduction The Fibrolamellar Cancer Foundation (FCF) is a public, non-profit organization established primarily to support the funding of research related to Fibrolamellar Hepatocellular Carcinoma. FCF is also committed to raising awareness about this disease through education and marketing across all stakeholders, as well as fostering a global community of patients and caregivers- for all suffering from, and caring for, this rare liver cancer www.fibrofoundation.org About Fibrolamellar Hepatocellular Carcinoma (FL-HCC):
Very rare form of liver cancer that usually occurs in teens/young adults who have no history of liver disease.
Approximately 300 people are diagnosed with this cancer worldwide- and often at Stage IV
Patients typically present with a palpable abdominal mass but no symptoms, although pain, weight loss and jaundice may occur.
The standard initial treatment is surgical removal of the tumor. When the tumor cannot be removed surgically or when there is distant spread, chemotherapy, and most recently immunotherapy is used.
While several new innovative therapies are being researched, still today there is no standard regimen - and the two year mortality rate continues at an alarming average of 90%.
Eligibility Applicants must be employed by an institution engaged in health related research. The applicant further must agree to be supervised by the institution at all times while conducting research supported by the FCF. In cases of a change in institutions while applying for, or utilizing funds from the FCF, applicants must notify the FCF, and will be subject to review based upon the change in circumstances. The research must focus on Fibrolamellar Hepatocellular Carcinoma. Studies should be intended to advance knowledge in the areas of FL-HCC. Of particular interest are those showing a clear path to clinical trials. Collaboration and open sourcing is a requirement for FCF funding and will be so specified in any grant agreement.
RFP application information is attached, and also available at www.fibrofoundation.org or email us at [email protected] Grant Review Periods FCF has a semiannual review period with application deadlines of January 1st and July 1st. The foundation is open to time sensitive requests - particularly for truly innovative ideas- throughout the year, as exceptions.

ACADEMIC DERMATOPATHOLOGIST
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is inviting
applications for an academically oriented junior dermatopathologist with a translational research focus.
The successful candidate will join a subspecialized dermatopathology service which supports the
clinical and academic mission of an internationally recognized pathology program. The Division of
Dermatopathology processes over 14,000 skin specimens annually, including a robust mixture of cases
from Cedars-Sinai-based dermatologists, outreach work from community-based dermatologists and
surgeons, and inpatient biopsies from a complex patient mix including transplants. There is a strong
component of surgical resections for advanced melanoma and merkel cell carcinoma. Cutaneous
malignancy tumor board and research committees meet monthly.
Cedars-Sinai is an 886 licensed bed quaternary medical care facility and is the largest not-for-profit
provider of health care on the west coast serving more than 9 million people in Los Angeles
County. The Medical Center complex is located at the junction of Los Angeles and Beverly Hills.
Beverly Pathology is an independently contracted pathology group under the Cedars-Sinai Medical
Foundation providing exclusive Pathology services to the medical center. The Department, with its 45
faculty, oversees a clinical operation of over 58,000 surgical cases, approximately 4 million laboratory
tests, robust outreach and consultative referral practices and Experimental and Translational pathology
facilities. There is an active GME training program with 28 residents and fellows.
We are seeking a board certified Anatomic Pathologist with fellowship training in Dermatopathology.
Prior experience is welcomed but not required. Ability to sign out cases in an additional specialty is an
asset, with interest in head and neck pathology (non-endocrine) and/or bone and soft tissue pathology
being particularly valuable. The Division currently has 2 pathologists providing dermatopathology
services. Substantial collaborative research potential is available with the Surgical Oncology service.
Eligibility for an academic appointment in the Cedars-Sinai Health System Professorial Program is
required.
